This is not canon but would have happened in season 2 before Cadmus and the spaceship landing because if it were up to me, it would have been Krypto who landed not someone else. LOL Thank you again to Jokerssmile for editing and supporting my craziness when writing. It's your turn now.

Should've Known

Chapter 1

Lena was standing on the outside stage waiting to be introduced to give a speech about the new wing at the children's hospital that she donated the money towards. She wanted it to be private, but the hospital board wanted a ceremony and all the hoopla.

Waiting for the ceremony to begin she looked around and saw her CFO, Jodi Turner and Kara standing next to one another in the crowd. Jodi has been a godsend to her, she was so glad she had her to do the day to day while she spent her days in the lab to get away from it all, and she had been such a great friend after everything. She tried not staring at Kara, she couldn't bear looking at her, it hurt too much. Holding back a sob, she instead focused on the papers in her shaking hands even though she already memorized what she was going to say.

In the crowd, Kara stood waiting for the ceremony to begin. Kara was there for Catco to report about the new wing and Lena. She didn't want this assignment, but James wouldn't budge. She started talking to Jodi to get some information hoping it would be enough without having to speak to Lena.

She needed to keep her distance from Lena but having to interview her was going to be awkward and she didn't know how it was going to go between them, she knows she hurt Lena and interviewing her was the last thing she wanted to do but there was no other option.

Lena was developing a headache, the ceremony was dragging on for far too long, she just wanted to get this over with and head back to her lab. She knew she had to speak with Kara afterwards for the Catco interview, which she did not want to do but James talked her into it. She thought perhaps he was trying to be a good friend and have them talk things out. But she also knew that will not happen, Kara was adamant that she was through with their affair and friendship.

It hurt because she still didn't understand what happened between them, she could understand if Kara wasn't ready for a sexual relationship, but she was the one who asked her out in the first place, but ending their friendship hurt Lena the most.

Lena didn't know what it was but when she first met Kara with Clark Kent, she was enamored with her. She was beautiful but there was something else, a light within her that captured Lena's heart. It was always difficult to make friends with her last name and her work ethic, but with Kara it was different, they just clicked and every moment was effortless.

She soon developed feelings for Kara but was afraid to confess them to her friend. As time went on, they became closer and then Kara asked Lena out on a date which became many dates. Their first kiss was amazing, and Lena was so happy. They had been dating a month when a few kisses turned into a night of passion between them and to Lena it was wonderful, she finally found happiness and love.

A week after their night together, Kara became distant, she was cancelling dates and lunches with the lamest excuses. Lena knew Kara was Supergirl but she waited for the blonde to tell her herself. It angered her at first, but she understood in the end, she needed to hide that part of herself to have a normal life, she just wished Kara trusted her enough to tell her.

It was shortly after that when Kara broke up with Lena leaving her heartbroken and distraught. Kara said it wasn't what she wanted and that after everything it would be too hard to remain friends, she said she was sorry and walked away. They haven't seen or talked to each other since and now having Kara interview her later will be hard.

It hurt, it hurt so much but Lena was used to that. It wasn't the first time, but it might be the last because she didn't know if her heart could take anymore. She conceded to the fact that she was not loveable, nor wanted enough to have a lasting relationship or any type of relationship at all. She quickly wiped a rogue tear from her cheek, now was not the time to dwell on it.

"Y'know, she didn't want to do this, she just wanted to donate the money quietly, but the board wanted to put on this shindig. I was going to do the speech, but the board wanted her." Jodi said to Kara.

"Yeah, I figured as much, she never liked to make a big deal when it came to these things unlike her family."

"Very true, she is such a wonderful person," Jodi said as the chairman of the board spoke at the podium.

"Yeah, she is." Kara replied sadly.

Jodi knew something happened between her boss and the reporter but she didn't push it. She knew that Lena had feelings for the blonde woman but didn't think it was reciprocated. They had stopped going out and Lena became recluse but didn't go into detail only that Kara wouldn't be around any longer. She figured now was a good time as any to get a little info from the reporter.

"Such a shame though." Jodi began. "She is one of the smartest and sweetest people I've ever known but she's also the unhappiest."

"Oh? I thought she was um fine?"

"She puts on a good front, but she is so dispirited. It's in her eyes, she can smile, and it lights up the room but if you look into her eyes, you can see how sad she really is."

"I…yeah she does have an amazing smile."

"She was happy for a while, I mean I think she was seeing someone," Jodi continued watching Kara. "And I never saw that light in her eyes before, she was happy but unfortunately it wasn't for long, whomever she was seeing broke it off and it broke her heart."

"I'm sure with time she'll be okay."

"Normally I would agree, she is so strong but I'm not sure this time. She seems as if she has given up on love and well National City too."

"It's usually difficult right after a breakup but I'm sure she'll be fine. Um what do you mean given up on National City? Is she leaving?" Kara asked confused.

"She hasn't come out and said it, but her actions lately make me believe that she is at least thinking about it."

Kara paled thinking Lena would leave, she was about to ask Jodi more when the speaker introduced Lena who stood up and walked to the podium to give her speech about the children's wing. Kara smiled a little, Lena was always so put together and so sure of herself, she was beautiful.

Lena had only started speaking when people in the crowd began heckling her and yelling that the hospital was bowing down to another Luthor for money.

Lena continued with her speech ignoring the taunts and shouting, this again was something she was used to.

Kara was lost in thought, not being able to see Lena was hard enough but for her to leave National City altogether was too much.

Jodi was becoming agitated with the protesters hoping they would just stop already. She looked up at Lena and could see that they were getting to her. "This is too much; I'm going to get her out of there." Jodi said as she left and went towards the stage.

The yelling was getting louder as more and more people joined in. Kara was brought out of her distraction when she heard a gunshot.

She looked up towards the stage and saw security people standing guard as well as Jodi who was laying on top of Lena to protect her.

"No, no, no."

Kara quickly ran and changed into Supergirl going after the man who shot at Lena, grabbing him, and dropping him next to a police officer.

Sirens were heard getting closer even over all the screams of the frightened people. Supergirl was trying to keep people calm and helping those who needed it. Once things were calmer, she went to the stage to see if Lena and Jodi were okay. But she was asked to move for the paramedics. Supergirl gasped when she saw blood and both Lena and Jodi unconscious.
