Naming The New Addition
"George?" Jane suggests yet another name earning an unsure hum in response from his wife for the umpteenth time. "What's wrong with George?"
"I had an ex-boyfriend called George during college." She reasons and to be honest it is one of her better attempts at reasoning so far. "He bought me a notebook for my birthday and took me fishing on valentine's day."
"He sounds riveting." He mutters with a grimace. Not once has she spoken about an ex-partner, and he has not been shocked at what bad luck she has had. "Okay err... Charlie?"
"My first arrest was a Charlie." She reminisces. "Charlie Taylor. It was a DUI."
"So is that a yes?"
"No. He was sick on my shoes." Her husband rolls his eyes at this. "What?!" She immediately protests, her arms wavering in preparation to defend herself.
"Nothing. Nothing... Max?"
"He will grow out of it." The curly-haired man lets out an exasperated sigh indicating that he now gives up. His wife is truly impossible at times. "What about Arthur?"
"Hm." He ponders, immediately liking the idea but wanting to drag this out a little as some kind of payback. "Arthur Conan Doyle, Arthur C. Clarke, King Arthur and now..." Jane leans down and scoops the newest addition to their family up into his arms, feeling comforted by the warmth the small creature brings. "Arthur Jane." It is a strong name, and they share a smile knowing that they have come to a decision… finally. "Shouldn't we let the kids name him?"
"Sure, if you want him to be called Sparkles or Cupcake."
Jane pretends to think this over for a second, still holding the small pup in his arms and Lisbon cannot help but notice how similar they look, both with their blond curls and blue eyes. It is a cute sight. "Arthur it is." He decides.
The discussion about potentially adding a dog to their family has occurred over the past few weeks yet still a part of her wasn't expecting picking one today but he was most insistent. She has been really busy at work as of late and today she has been gifted a rare day off, one whilst their kids are at school. She started it by having a lie in, letting him deal with getting the youngsters off to school and nursery, when he returned, he triumphantly declared that today is the day. "Do you think the dog is a good idea?" She asks out of the blue from the passenger's seat as they make the journey back to their forever home which still looks as lovely as the day Jane finished renovating it – it is just a bit more cluttered.
"Firstly, the dog has a name and secondly, he is the car with us." She glances back between them to look at the metal crate resting on the back seat. Their newest addition, Arthur Jane, is sleeping soundly, curled up in on himself with a green blanket wrapped around him. With that and the tote bag full of toys she has realised that he is going to be overindulged just like their children.
"I know, to both of those things but... it is a big step."
"A big step?" He sounds genuinely flummoxed by this, evidently not feeling that way at all. "Teresa, we are married with two children. I think we have done the big step." He is most definitely right there but that doesn't mean this isn't a big commitment. "And I think it is a good idea." She doesn't look so sure, and she sends a raised brow in his direction which he vaguely catches before he focuses back on the road. "You heard Dr Birch. Dogs can help young children with anxiety and could be a great aid for Tyler." They have had to take their five-year-old to a child's psychiatrist because of him struggling with anxiety that affects him going to school. It is really difficult at times to make him. The root cause of anxiety has been difficult to locate, Dr Birch's has two theories that it is either to do with his father being overprotective when he was younger – although this is understandable – or it is because of the short periods when his mother was hospitalised during her second pregnancy. "Plus, it would teach Danielle responsibility."
"Jane, she is two years old."
"And a little madam. She gets that from you." He jokingly accuses.
"Yes, I'm the one who has spoilt her..." Her tone is clearly sarcastic but that just makes him chuckle.
Yes, he does spoil his kids at times, buying them a dog is evident of that, but they are not spoilt. They are two delightful children, his greatest gifts, and the life their family has now built for themselves is wonderfully normal compared to the life they used to have. He very rarely goes near the FBI, only for the odd case and even then, he is never in the field whilst her duties have changed, and she has taken on a more managerial role than one that would put her in danger. She didn't want to leave her job when she became a mother, it was always too important to her, but she also understands the important of her safety – this was a good compromise.
Getting Arthur settled into the house becomes a bit of task thanks to the cockapoo puppy running around the kitchen, exploring this new, strange location. Jane spends the time unpacking the car, placing his fluffy bed, and filling up a water bowl whilst Lisbon watches the young dog performs laps around the kitchen island as she becomes increasingly flustered. Now she has four living things draining the energy from her but when the pup changes his route to give her husband's feet a sniff she laughs, already falling for the blonde, curly-haired, annoying thing… like she did with her partner.
When she catches his eye, he is exhibiting a smug grin, knowing that he has already won her over and she is straightaway rolling her eyes. The derisive action has him making the short journey to her across the wooden floor – Arthur following him as he goes – before he puts an arm around her shoulders, pulling her form into his side. "It isn't long before we have to do the pickup." He glances to the clock on the oven and hums, the day has really flown by.
"It took us less time to name our children than the dog." He teases and she softly elbows him in his ribs in reply. "Ouch."
Her excitement about their new dog definitely increases when she heads off to pick up the kids from school and nursery. Jane stays behind to watch the little rascal and he is buzzing with anticipation to see the look on Tyler and Danielle's faces. Their mother manages to keep it to herself during the journey, keeping things casual by asking about their days and what they learnt – her son expressed great enthusiasm about his lesson about the dinosaurs whilst her daughter was confused at the concept of learning anything. She is a toddler; she spent the day playing with other young children in a ball pit.
On returning to the house, she notes how the kitchen door has been shut and Jane is hovering in the hallway, hopping from one foot to the other animatedly and Lisbon considers for a moment that he may give the game away, but their children don't appear to pick up on his odd behaviour. She helps her daughter with her shoes and jumper whilst Tyler manages to deal with his own. "Can I have a snack before dinner?" He asks his parents as he goes to move towards the shut kitchen door and immediately, they both slide in his way.
"In a minute." His mother replies, ignoring the boy's pout because she knows how it will not last, not with the news he is about to learn. "Now you two, we have someone staying with us from now on."
"It is not Uncle Jimmy, is it?" He questions before expanding. "He plays with my toys and eats all the pudding."
Jane struggles to conceal his laughter at his son's audaciousness which they don't get to see often but it is nice when they do. "No… It isn't Uncle Jimmy." Although she manages to keep a straight face, she can understand where the five-year-old is coming from; Jimmy used to play with her toys and eat all the pudding when they were younger too. "Does daddy want to do the honours?" She queries, turning to her husband who is beaming from ear to ear.
He takes a few steps backwards and rests his hand on the door handle, not taking his eyes off his kids who just gaze back at him expectantly. "Meet Arthur!" He declares as he opens the door allowing the puppy to come dashing out into the hallway, getting all excited about the new people.
Lisbon lifts Danielle into her arms, the little girl having become slightly nervous about the impulsive cockapoo jumping up at her, but she is still giggling whilst her brother falls to his knees to play with Arthur. The pup gives his face a lick. "Mummy, daddy! He's licking me!" Tyler exclaims, becoming very excited, the sight making his mother realise that this was a good decision. To help get their little boy out of his shell. She looks to her husband whose grin hasn't left his face and sends him a smile, their eyes communicating all that needs to be said.
Arthur Jane is a great addition to their family.
