As she woke up, Nina stretched out before realising that she was alone in bed. Her eyes wandered over to the clock before she almost jumped out of bed at the time. Smiling to herself as she realised that it was Sunday, she was about to go back asleep before noticing the smell. Deciding to find out what Jack was up to, she climbed out of bed and made her way to the kitchen.
"Good morning, sleepy," Jack spoke as she walked into the room. He smiled as she planted a kiss on his cheek before she headed towards the coffee machine.
"Good morning," she replied, suddenly feeling hungry even though she often didn't feel like eating first thing in the morning.
"I'm making pancakes for breakfast," he said as she poured herself a cup of coffee. He glanced at her as she took a sip before returning his attention to the pan. Despite her only being out of bed for a few moments, she still looked beautiful to him. It was one of the little things she had in common with Teri, although he tried putting his wife out of his mind. No point in getting depressed over their problems right now. No desire, either, not when it would ruin a peaceful morning like this.
"Pancakes?" Nina asked as she glanced at the pan in front of him.
"Yeah, we always had pancakes for breakfast on Sundays. One of those childhood traditions you always remember," he replied. He and his brother Graem had fond memories of Sundays and he couldn't help but wonder. Was this a way of keeping himself connected to a brother he hardly knew anymore?
"So you're keeping the tradition going?" Nina replied, before regretting it as she came to a realisation. He should be making them for Teri and Kim right now. Luckily, he didn't seem to have noticed that.
A short while later, two plates of pancakes drizzled with maple syrup were on the table. Nina smiled as she watched him tuck into his with all the enthusiasm of a child. Beginning to eat her own, she felt a pang of sadness. She had none of these little traditions from her own parents to carry on.
"Everything okay?" Jack asked. Nina looked at him with confusion for a moment, before realising that he must have noticed.
"Yeah, everything's okay. I'll have to start a tradition like this myself someday," she replied. Of course, it was unlikely she would pass it on. Her having a child? Not with either of her jobs.
"You could always adopt this one?"
"I could!" Nina replied. That was easier said than done when she had no idea what would happen in the next year.
Silence fell as they ate and for a moment, Nina had one of those urges. They usually arose during times when the two of them were alone - and in a relaxed environment - and she had gotten good at pushing them down. Yet she allowed the idea to float in her mind a bit longer than normal. What if she was to confess all to him, right there at the table? Beg him for help in extracting herself from her situation?
"Are you okay?" Jack asked in very much the same way as he had done earlier. Inside, she was yelling at herself to keep things under control. On the outside, she smiled and nodded.
"Yeah, thinking about something I need to do tomorrow," she replied. He grinned before leaning over and kissing her cheek.
"Tomorrow can wait. You can't waste a Sunday worrying about Monday," he told her.
"Tomorrow can wait," she replied with a grin as big as his.
