My first Sugar Rush story, and it's making me quite nervous. But somehow there are over 6,000 words to read there.
It mainly focuses on Vanilla Pumpkin(Vanellope x Gloyd), and if you don't like this ship, deal with it. I also added a bit of Minty x Swizzle in there, because why not? :P
The idea of this story came to mind when I drew Gloyd with the Hanahaki disease. And I hope you'll enjoy reading.
(Note 1: Rated T for a reason you'll understand while reading.
Note 2: The racers are all older in this story. About 16-17 or so.)

Hanahaki…
A well-known fictional disease which occurs when the victim suffers from one-sided love, and they cough up flower petals. It only ends when the beloved returns their feelings…or when the victim dies.
And that…was the case with Gloyd Orangeboar.
He was the resident prankster, and a very energetic guy. And even then, he was sweeter than candy.
Right now, he was sitting on a jawbreaker for who knows how long, deep in thoughts. He thought of various things, like ideas for new pranks he could do on others, ways to annoy Big Sis Breezy-ahem…Adorabreezle. But most of all…Vanellope Von Scweetz. She was constantly in his mind, and he couldn't stop thinking about her. Every time he looked at her, he couldn't help but blush. Somehow, he could picture her perfectly in his head. Her raven hair with candy mixed into it, her hazelnut eyes, her adorable smile, and he had to admit that she got nice curves.
'Urgh…this is stupid…I wish there was an easy way to tell her that…I love her…' He thought to himself. And right at that moment, something sharp stung his heart, but he simply ignored it. This can't get any worse…right?
"Sigh…I'll win your heart one day, Princess." He whispered to himself, hoping that she will feel the same way as him.
"Yo! Gloyd!"
Gloyd jumped when he heard someone call him. He knew that it was Swizzle Malarkey, his best friend and a bro. He's the resident daredevil among the racers.
"Hey, Swizz! What's up?" Gloyd waved at his best friend.
"Eh, nothing much, dude." Swizzle shrugged as he sat down on a jawbreaker. The one next to the jawbreaker Gloyd was sitting on. "What are you up to?" He then asked.
"Well…" Gloyd trailed off in what he was going to say as he started thinking about Vanellope again. He then started thinking about the things he could do with her, but those thoughts were cut off.
"Heyy! Earth to Gloyd!" Swizzle waved his hand over Gloyd's face, snapping him back to reality.
"Aah! S-sorry, Swizz! Deep in thoughts..." Gloyd stuttered, without realizing that he was blushing.
"Let me guess…is Vanellope in your mind?" Swizzle smirked, making Gloyd jump in surprise.
"Wh-*cough*-h-how did you know?!" He asked, blushing harder.
"Dude, it's obvious to everyone that you're in love with her. You should tell her how you feel, or things will take a bad turn." Swizzle said.
Gloyd's cheeks were so red, you could barely see the bright orange blush right now.
"Oh…hmm…y-yeah, I can do that…but…" The orange prankster mumbled.
"But what?" Swizzle raised his eyebrow.
"I…*cough*…I'm nervous about what might happen if I confess to her…" Gloyd sighed.
Swizzle didn't say a word, as if he thought about something. After a minute of awkward silence, he stood up and looked at Gloyd.
"You'll never know what'll happen if you don't at least try. You better hurry, or else...like I said...things will take a bad turn." The daredevil said and walked away.
"Wait, what do you mean by things will take a bad turn?!" Gloyd shouted, confused. But Swizzle was already gone.
He looked down and thought of the possible outcomes if he did confess to Vanellope, and at the same time, the same stinging feeling in his heart came back the more he thought.
'But…what if…what if she doesn't love me back?'
This thought stung him so much that he suddenly started coughing. When he looked down to see if he threw up anything, he was stunned.
"Blood…? P-petals…?!" He asked himself, shaking. "W-w-what is going on?!"
Swizzle hopped onto his kart, and immediately felt concern and inner panic. He knew what is going on with Gloyd. Minty Zaki, the bookworm and jewelry maker of Sugar Rush, told him everything about the rare "fictional" disease called Hanahaki, which occurs when a victim suffers from one-sided love. There are only 2 ways to get rid of this disease, either for their crush to return their feelings…or…die.
'I have to inform her about this fast! I'm not ready to lose my best friend!' Swizzle thought to himself, gritting his teeth.
He made it to her house and entered the jewelry workshop, as he was sure that that's where she would usually be. And sure enough, there she was, working on a pair of earrings.
"Yo, Mintz. Mind if I talk to you for a moment?" He said.
Minty stopped working and looked at Swizzle, slightly annoyed.
"What is it now, Swizz? Say it fast." She sighed.
"Remember when you told about this Hanahaki Disease thing?" Swizzle asked.
"Hmm…yeah, I do remember. So?" Minty replied.
"So! Gloyd is at risk of dying!"
Right as Swizzle said that, Minty stood up, wide eyed and shocked.
"Are you saying that Gloyd has the Hanahaki Disease?!" She asked.
"I can't say for sure that that's what's risking his death…but either way, we have to save him." Swizzle said, determined.
"Well, then let's go get Adorabreezle. I'm sure she knows what to do." Minty said and left the workshop in a hurry, while Swizzle stood there, not moving. Thoughts of Gloyd dying from the Hanahaki Disease were racing inside his head.
"Come on!" He shook his head to get rid of the thoughts when Minty called him. He left the workshop and silently followed her to their karts.
Meanwhile, Vanellope was with her close friend, Adorabreezle Winterpop, at her cabin house. She was the resident ski expert and animal lover. Though shy, she was very caring, like a big sister to the racers.
"Come on, Vanellope. It's not that hard to confess to him." She said, trying to encourage the president.
"Well, the point is…I don't even know if he feels the same way as I do!" Vanellope groaned. The truth is that she loves Gloyd, but she doesn't know what to do about this, or even how to confess to him. She's too nervous to do this.
"He does. You don't have to worry about that." Adorabreezle said calmly, petting her pet fox Slushy.
"How are you so sure about this?" Vanellope asked in disbelief.
"Because everyone here knows that he's madly in love with you." Adorabreezle smirked, causing Vanellope to blush.
"Huh…that's good to know…I guess…" She muttered, feeling a bit hopeful, knowing that Gloyd really is in love with her.
"Oh. Also, maybe give him something he likes when confessing. Something like...I don't know...candies! He loves candies, how about you give them those." Adorabreezle suggested, and Slushy barked in agreement.
"I'll try. Thanks, Breezy." Vanellope smiled and left.
She glitched towards her kart, and as she started it up, she saw Swizzle and Minty driving towards Adorabreezle's house. And to her surprise, there was panic visible on their faces.
"Why are they so panicked? Did something happen?" She asked herself, curious and confused at the same time. 'Oh, whatever. I got other things to focus on, like confessing to Gloyd. Oh…I hope this actually works…' She thought to herself as she drove past them.
Adorabreezle put down Slushy and was about to go to her room and rest when the door suddenly burst open.
"Kyah!" She squeaked and looked behind her. There stood Minty and Swizzle, panting.
"Big Sis Breezy!" They shouted at the same time, and simultaneously, a vein popped up on Adorabreezle's forehead.
"I told you not to call me Big Sis…" She sighed, obviously annoyed.
"Heheh, sorry. Force of habit." Swizzle chuckled nervously, as Minty did too.
"Ugh…anyway…what do you want?" Adorabreezle asked.
"We need your help right now!" Minty shouted seconds after calming down from the chuckling. And right after she shouted that, Adorabreezle's worries have triggered.
"Wait, what?! Why? What happened? Did someone get hurt?!" She asked.
"Worse. A racer is at risk of dying." Swizzle said. "And his name is Gloyd Orangeboar." He added.
"R-risk of dying?!" Adorabreezle screamed, panicking inside.
Slushy sensed the panic and rubbed her head at her owner's legs to try and calm her down, which luckily worked. Adorabreezle kneeled down and ruffled Slushy's head, sighing.
"Well, no time to explain! Let's just hurry!" Minty grabbed Adorabreezle by her wrist and pulled her out of her house to their karts, surprising Slushy.
"Aah! S-slow down!" Adorabreezle yelled, almost tripping.
"Arf?" The light blue fox barked in confusion, hoping her owner would answer her.
"I-I'll be gone for a little while, Slushy. Be a good girl, alright?" Adorabreezle replied, pulling her arm out of Minty's grip, and Slushy barked in response, letting the skiing expert know that she understood.
Outside, Swizzle was already on his kart, waiting for the girls to come, and once they did and got onto their karts, all 3 racers started them up and drove out of the Ice Cream Mountain Range to where Swizzle last saw Gloyd.
'You better stay strong, dude…' He thought to himself, worried about what might happen to his best friend.
Gloyd couldn't stop coughing, and the petals wouldn't stop coming out of his mouth. 'A-am I sick? Am I at risk of dying?! I don't want to die!' He shivered at those thoughts.
Suddenly, he got a vision…
…
He was with Vanellope, sitting close to one another, fingers intertwined. It's what he wished was real. They looked at each other…and leaned closer…
And closer…
…
The vision then disappeared, and when Gloyd realized this wasn't real, he shivered more and started sobbing as his heart stung more. Simultaneously, he coughed up more and more petals, to the point that he started coughing up flowers.
"GLOYD!" A familiar female voice called out to him. He shakily looked up and saw Minty, Swizzle and Adorabreezle running towards him.
"O-oh…h-h-hey…*cough*…guys…" He stuttered.
Adorabreezle suddenly gasped loudly, causing Gloyd to flinch. He could probably guess why.
"Oh…my…pixels…" Swizzle picked up a petal from the ground. This and other petals, as well as some of the flowers were covered in blood.
"What the Polybius is that, dude?!" He yelled, pointing at the petal he's holding.
"It's…umm…I…" Gloyd was lost. He didn't know what to say. He also didn't know what was that all about, and why he was coughing up flowers and petals.
"You don't have to say anything. We know what's going on." Minty interrupted.
"Huh?" Gloyd looked up at Minty, waiting for her to continue.
"You have the Hanahaki Disease." She simply said.
"T-the what disease?" Gloyd asked. Confused about whatever the Polybius Hanahaki is.
"Hanahaki. It occurs whenever you think that the person you love doesn't love you back. In other words, suffer from one-sided love." She explained.
"This honestly sounds like a deadly disease…" Adorabreezle whispered to herself.
"Umm…is there a way to cure this disease?" Gloyd asked.
"There are only 2 ways to cure Hanahaki. Either for your crush to love you back…or die."
Once Minty had said that, tears were dripping down the prankster's cheeks. He loved Vanellope, but he never believed that she would ever love him back. This really stung his heart, as he coughed up a few more petals.
Adorabreezle knelt down and picked up a blood covered flower. Using her jacket sleeve, she cleaned it up, then proceeded to smell the flower to figure out what genus of flower it was.
"Hmm…vanilla flowers…" The skiing expert hummed.
"Vanilla flowers? That's Vanellope's favorite genus of flora, isn't it?" Minty guessed.
"I-it is…" Gloyd muttered, confirming what the jewelry maker guessed.
"So? Does this mean anything?" Swizzle asked, putting his hands behind his head.
"It does." The girls said at the same time. "It most definitely links to the person he loves. And you know who." Adorabreezle added.
"He loves Vanellope, I know. We all know. But why in the world would he think that she doesn't love him back?"
Swizzle's voice got more muffled in Gloyd's ears as the daredevil kept talking. And then, he got another vision…
…
Vanellope stood in front of him, saying something. Despite not hearing her, he felt himself saying something to her despite not hearing himself either. She smiled sweetly, and leaned closer.
He closed his eyes, waiting for her to make her move…
…
"Gloyd!"
Gloyd quickly opened his eyes and looked up. Adorabreezle was standing there, looking at him worryingly. It took him a few seconds to realize that this was just another figment of imagination, and when he did, he couldn't fight back the tears anymore and broke down, crying. His heart stung so much, and he was coughing up a lot of flowers and petals.
Worried, angered and panicked, all at the same time, Swizzle grabbed the broken boy by the shoulders. "Dude! Get a hold of yourself!" He yelled, shaking his best friend.
"If you keep thinking like this, your chance of dying will only increase." Minty said.
Gloyd sniffled and wiped off the tears left on his face.
"W-what can we do? I…I-I don't…want to die…" He sobbed quietly.
"You have to confess to her. That's for sure." Adorabreezle said. "And we're here to help." She smiled.
In the Candy Cane Forest, Vanellope hopped out of her kart and approached the door to Candlehead's boutique, as she figured that asking the fashion designer of Sugar Rush for help could work.
Hoping she was in there, the president took a deep breath and opened the door, causing the bell above it to jingle. Once she got in, she looked around. There was no sign of Candlehead in here, though.
"Hello? Candlehead?" She called out to the fashion designer.
"She's not here. She left to go get something." A familiar voice said.
Alert, Vanellope looked at the staircase, and there came down Taffyta Muttonfudge, her good friend and the second-in-command racer.
"Taffyta? What are you doing here?" She asked.
"I came here to ask her for something, but she left before I could even say what it was." Taffyta sighed before looking at Vanellope. "I guess the same goes to you, right?" She asked, raising an eyebrow.
"Yep. I guess we're in the same boat." Vanellope chuckled awkwardly.
Right at that moment, the bell jingled, and both girls looked at the door. There stood Candlehead, holding a box of various fabric.
"Hey, Taffyta! Sorry I made you-h-huh?" Candlehead paused and looked at Vanellope, surprised. "Vanellope?! What are you-w-WOAAAH!" She tripped and clumsily fell down, dropping the fabric she was carrying.
"Candlehead!" Vanellope and Taffyta yelled at the same time.
"Are you okay?" The former asked.
"Urgh…y-yeah, I'm okay!" Candlehead giggled awkwardly, rubbing her head.
"Sigh…just how clumsy can you get?" Taffyta sighed, helping her friend get up. And Vanellope couldn't agree more. Despite the talent, Candlehead was a clumsy person.
"No, really. I'm fine! No need to worry about me!" The fashion designer giggled again.
"Urgh…" Vanellope mentally facepalmed herself. 'What an airhead.' She thought to herself.
"Soooo…" Candlehead knelt down and picked up the fabric she dropped. "What were you going to ask me, Taffyta?" She asked, looking at the strawberry themed racer.
"Uhh, you know what? I'll let Vanellope say what she wants first." Taffyta took a step back, forcing Vanellope to make eye contact with Candlehead.
"Well?" Candlehead tilted her head, waiting.
"If I'll say it, promise to not laugh at me?" Vanellope asked.
"Promise!" Candlehead nodded, and so did Taffyta.
She took a deep breath, calming herself down before saying what she had to say.
"The thing is…I love Gloyd, but I'm too nervous to confess to him. And…it would be nice if you could help me."
Candlehead and Taffyta looked at Vanellope, surprised. The president closed her eyes, ready for the girls' laughter, but they were smiling for a different reason, and she jumped when Candlehead started squealing loudly. The flame on her candle shined brighter and grew bigger from her excitement.
"About dang time!" Taffyta grinned, placing her hands on Vanellope's shoulders.
"Huh?!" Vanellope blinked, speechless. "Y-y-you'll…actually help me?!" Is all what she stuttered out.
"Of course we'll help you!" Candlehead jumped in excitement.
"If it's as important as confessing to a boy you like, then be lucky that you have us." Taffyta smirked.
"Hmm…I guess…" Vanellope hummed, blushing.
"Well, first off! You need a super cute outfit! Good thing I made one in advance!" Candlehead took off the outfit she made for Vanellope from the mannequin. It was a mint-green sleeveless dress with a white collar and a white waistband with a bow. For some reason though, it had an open upper back. Other than the dress, it also included white stockings with light mint-green bows, and mint-green flat shoes that matched the dress in color, with white bows on the shoes.
"Do I have to?" Vanellope asked, unsure what to say when she saw the outfit.
"Of course you have to!" Candlehead yelled. "The day you confess to your future boyfriend has to be one of the best days you'll ever remember!"
"Okay, okay, sheesh!" Vanellope took a step back from the fashion designer.
"Here! Put this on and we'll see how it looks!" She quickly smiled, giving the outfit to the president.
"Sigh…I'm going to regret this…" She whispered to herself, grabbing the outfit and entering the dressing room to try it on.
Candlehead then eagerly looked at Taffyta, who was holding back her giggles from her behavior. "Wanna grab some cake while we wait?" She suggested.
"As long as you make tea!" Taffyta smirked.
"Eeeee! Okay!" Candlehead jumped in excitement and went upstairs, with Taffyta following suit.
A few minutes later, they came back downstairs, right as Vanellope left the dressing room, with the outfit on.
"Well? How do I look?" Vanellope looked at them, raising her eyebrow.
"Oh my pixels! You look amazing!" Candlehead squealed, with the flame being bigger and brighter to reflect her excitement.
Taffyta approached Vanellope and nudged her shoulder. "Gloyd's gonna swoon over your good looks. No doubt." She smirked.
"A-are you sure about this?" Vanellope looked at her dress, blushing.
"Mmhmm!" Candlehead nodded vivorously.
"You just need to let your hair loose, and…" Taffyta pulled down Vanellope's hair twizzler, letting her long raven hair go loose. "Perfect!" She smirked.
"Oooh! Gloyd is going to faint when he sees you like this! Or blush like crazy, at most!" Candlehead snickered.
"Okay, now you're exaggerating…" Vanellope sighed, blushing harder, while Taffyta just shrugged.
She then proceeded to adjust the collar due to discomfort. Same with the waistband. And that's when she got enough guts to tell the Candlehead about this.
"Umm, Candlehead?" Vanellope looked at the fashion designer.
"Yeah?" She tilted her head.
"To be honest…this waistband is a bit too tight on me. And I feel like this collar is suffocating me." Vanellope explained, from which Candlehead paused.
"You mean to say that this dress is too small on you?!" She asked.
"Uhh, kinda…but yeah, this dress is a bit too small on me." Vanellope said.
"Urgh…fuck!" Candlehead yelled in frustration, letting out an inferno from her candle.
Vanellope and Taffyta gasped in shock from what she just yelled. She looked at their shocked faces and quickly covered her mouth, very embarrassed.
"I'll just…go take off this outfit…" Vanellope sighed, adjusting the collar a bit.
"Hmm…okay! I can just fix the dress in a jiffy so that it won't be too small on you!" Candlehead quickly smiled as the president entered the dressing room, a bit surprised that she was quick to change her emotion from frustration to neutral-happy.
"You've got big mood swings, don't you?" Taffyta shook her head as the fashion designer shrugged, still smiling. Neither of them noticing the door opening, despite the bell jingling above it, and they could clearly hear it.
In Adorabreezle's house, Minty was reading a book while Gloyd repeated something to himself, occasionally coughing up petals from the negative thoughts. Swizzle was gone, probably to go get something. And Adorabreezle was staying close to the prankster, keeping an eye on him.
"Okay, Gloyd. I want to hear what you're going to say to Vanellope." The skiing expert clapped her hands, startling Gloyd.
"And don't cough while saying it, got it?" Minty looked away from the book.
"I-I'll try…" Gloyd said.
Feeling nervous, he stuttered out what he repeated to himself, but failed as he coughed up a lot of flower petals and dropped to his knees.
"Gloyd! Are you okay?" Adorabreezle gasped, worried about him.
"I…*cough*…I think…" He muttered, panting.
"Okay, well that won't work…" Minty sighed.
"Yeah…" Adorabreezle knelt down to the prankster. "Maybe it will be easier for you to just tell her in words when you meet her." She said.
"I-I guess…" Gloyd quietly agreed. "Is there any good place where I can confess to her?" He then asked.
"Oh, yeah. You can try going to the Sugar Glass Tree up on the Ice Cream Mountain Range." Adorabreezle said.
"There's a Sugar Glass Tree?" Gloyd was curious, as he hadn't heard of such a tree before.
"Mmhmm!" The skiing expert nodded.
"You know…you can give her something she likes while confessing." Minty suggested.
"Like what?" Gloyd asked, causing the jewelry maker to facepalm.
"You should know what she likes!" She yelled.
"Umm…flowers?" He guessed.
"That doesn't sound like a good idea if you're coughing up vanilla flowers." Adorabreezle shook her head.
"I would suggest a book, but…knowing her…she wouldn't read it anyway." Minty sighed.
"Oh! Maybe a plushy!" Adorabreezle suggested.
As Gloyd thought about this suggestion, Swizzle entered the cabin, holding an outfit. "I got the outfit from Candlehead, dudes." He informed.
"Arf arf!" Slushy barked, greeting the daredevil.
"Oh, you got the outfit? Great." Minty smiled.
"What for?" Gloyd asked.
"You gotta look good when you confess to her, man. That's why I left for a moment. To get the outfit for you." Swizzle showed the outfit to Gloyd. It was a light yellow dress shirt with orange buttons, brown jeans and orange ankle boots with yellow fur on top.
"Oh…umm…" The prankster didn't know what to say.
"Hmm. Put it on and we'll see how it looks on you." Minty hummed.
"Hopefully it's not too small. You know what happens when Candlehead messes up with the outfit size." Gloyd said.
"Ohh…I don't want to hear her yell that again…" Adorabreezle shivered at the thought of Candlehead yelling the F word in frustration.
Gloyd nodded in agreement, grabbing the outfit from Swizzle and then entering one of the rooms to try it on.
"Sigh…Candlehead's hot temper can be pretty intimidating sometimes…" The skiing expert sighed.
"Then let's hope that this outfit fits him perfectly." Swizzle shrugged.
A few minutes later, Gloyd came out of the room, wearing the outfit.
"How do I look?" He asked.
"Looking good, dude!" Swizzle smirked.
"Does it fit you perfectly?" Adorabreezle asked.
"It does, actually!" Gloyd smiled, from which his 3 respond by sighing in relief. "Though…these boots are a bit tight on me." He added, causing Adorabreezle to shiver.
"For real?" Swizzle was in disbelief.
"Ah, shit…" Minty sighed.
"Minty! Watch your mouth!" Adorabreezle yelled as Minty covered her mouth.
"But that won't bother me. I can deal with it." Gloyd said.
"So are you cool with this shoe size or not?!" Swizzle asked, a little frustrated, and Gloyd simply nodded.
"Okay, good…" Adorabreezle sighed.
"Well, I think you're ready." Minty smiled.
"Wait-*cough*-n-now?!" Gloyd shouted, rephrasing what Minty said in his thoughts.
"Ehhhhh…maybe not now…how about tomorrow? You'll definitely need a rest after coughing up a lot of blood and flowers." Adorabreezle said, calming him down.
"O-okay…" Gloyd sighed.
"You better stay strong, got it?" Swizzle lightly punched the prankster in the shoulder. He nodded before going into the room where he left his clothes to change back.
"Hopefully this will be over tomorrow…" Adorabreezle muttered.
"It better be…" Swizzle sighed.
Midnight in Sugar Rush. The racers were all asleep…well…most of them.
Candlehead was determined to get the dress perfect so much that she didn't think about getting some rest at all.
"Ahh…I'm…almost…done…" She tiringly said to herself, yawning. She knew that she was tired. Very tired. But she didn't care right now.
She put down the mint-green fabric by the sewing machine and went upstairs to make herself some hot chocolate, in order to preserve energy. Although it was dark inside, she didn't need to turn on the lights, since her candle was giving out the light.
'Can't wait to finally finish the dress…and Vanellope's going to fit in it perfectly…unlike last time…' She thought to herself.
After making the hot beverage, she went back downstairs to continue working on the dress.
And what she didn't know is that she wasn't the only one not asleep.
Gloyd on the other hand had a lot of struggles falling asleep that night, which was quite unusual of him. Worry, fear and panic were swirling in his head. He was very nervous about the day he would finally confess to Vanellope, and he didn't want to mess it up. Most of all, he was afraid of the worst possible outcome: being rejected. His heart stung from this thought, and he coughed up the vanilla petals. The more he thought about this, the worse his heart stung, the more he coughed, and from petals to flowers.
"S-stop…" He shivered, as if he was talking to the negative thoughts in his head.
As the argument between the thoughts happened, he wiped off the tears and looked at the outfit he had to wear for this day. He sighed, coughing up a few more flowers. He had to stay strong.
He shook his head, deciding to let it go for now and try to think more positively, lied back down and closed his eyes. Eventually, he fell asleep, hoping that it will all be over soon.
The next day came, and all 11 racers were getting ready for the day of racing. Vanellope was putting on her usual outfit: teal hoodie, brown skirt, mint green stockings with different patterns, and black boots. Her hair was tied into her usual ponytail.
'After the racing…I'm gonna do it.' She thought to herself before leaving.
They all met up at the race track. Some were bidding each other good luck with today, others were taunting or teasing each other. The latter was especially true with Minty and Crumbelina. They were well known among the racers as the rivals.
"Good luck, Gloyd!" Vanellope lightly punched the prankster in the shoulder, causing him to blush lightly.
"Ah, y-you too!" He smiled, covering his mouth to prevent any coughing. She smiled back and glitched towards her kart. He blushed harder, picturing her smiling in his head.
"Dude, wake up! We got a race to start!" Swizzle smacked Gloyd in the head.
"Ow! Okay, I know, but why smack me in the head?!" Gloyd asked, angered.
"You were dozing off, idiot." Swizzle facepalmed.
Gloyd was about to tackle the daredevil out of anger when someone grabbed him by the wrist, stopping him. He looked behind to see who it was.
"Now's not the time for fighting." It was Adorabreezle. She had her eyes narrowed on the prankster.
"S-sorry, Big Sis Breezy…" He tried to pull his hand away from the skiing expert, but she only tightened the grip.
"And don't call me Big Sis." She gritted her teeth before letting him go.
As the tension had quieted down, they got onto their karts, started them up and put on the helmets, ready to race.
Later that day, after all of the racing, Vanellope visited Candlehead's boutique again to see if she fixed the dress that was too tight on her yesterday.
"Candlehead!" She called out to the fashion designer.
"Oh, hi, Vanellope…!" Candlehead responded, yawning. She hoped that Vanellope didn't hear the yawning
"Did you get any sleep last night?" Vanellope raised her eyebrow, obviously able to hear the yawn.
"Maybe…" She trailed off. "But hey, on the bright side, I fixed up the dress. Try it on." She then pointed at the outfit on the mannequin, with the fixed dress.
"Okay…" With slight concern, Vanellope grabbed the outfit and entered the dressing room to put it on, as well as try on the fixed dress.
It took her two whole minutes to put it on, and throughout those minutes, Candlehead had fallen asleep on the desk. Vanellope saw that and decided to wake her up by pinching her cheek.
"Aaah! I'm awake!" The fashion designer jolted awake.
"Seriously, Candlehead. You need to get some rest." Vanellope said, putting her hands on her hips.
"Sorry…" Candlehead yawned. "I see you've put it on, huh?" She looked at Vanellope.
"I did. And now the dress actually fits me perfectly." The president smirked.
"Yay…!" Candlehead cheered tiringly.
"Now go get some rest." Vanellope pointed at the staircase. Candlehead simply nodded and went upstairs to get proper sleep.
The president looked down at her outfit, tugging on her skirt a bit and feeling slightly concerned. "Will Gloyd even like this outfit?" She asked herself.
Meanwhile, Gloyd was looking at the mirror, with his new outfit on. He felt nervous, since he didn't want to mess up while confessing to Vanellope. He coughed up a few petals before getting himself together.
'I can do this. I…can…do this…' He thought to himself, gaining a bit of determination.
He looked at his hat that was on his bed drawer and considered to put it on before deciding that he looked a bit better in this outfit without it. He took a deep breath before leaving the house.
It took him a few minutes by kart, but he made it to the Sugar Glass Tree that Adorabreezle had mentioned. Once there, he took deep breaths to calm down, and leaned by the sugar trunk, waiting for Vanellope. He hoped she would come.
"He's right up there!"
Gloyd gasped when he recognized this voice and look at the distance. He saw Adorabreezle and Vanellope, walking closer to the Sugar Glass Tree. Panicked, he hid behind the trunk, hoping she wouldn't spot him there.
"He's up at the Sugar Glass Tree." The skiing expert said.
"That one?" Vanellope looked at her, pointing at the tree.
"Yes! Well, good luck with the confession!" She winked at the president before skipping away, leaving her there, blushing.
Vanellope looked up at the Sugar Glass Tree and sighed. 'I'll just get this over with.' She thought to herself and went up to the tree. Gloyd peeked behind the tree to see if she was approaching the tree, and sure enough, she was. He quickly hid away from her and covered his mouth, panting heavily and preventing anymore coughing. He was blushing heavily as he got a good look at her. She wore the outfit Candlehead made for her, and her hair was let loose.
'She's…so…pretty…!' He thought to himself, flustered.
"Gloyd? Are you here?" He jumped when heard Vanellope calling out to him. Sighing, he came out of his hiding spot and forced himself to make eye contact with her. "Oh. Hey." She smiled.
"H-hey, Princess…" He stuttered.
"President." She corrected him.
"Right…sorry…" He mumbled.
"So what are you doing here?" Vanellope tried to be calm in this situation by asking this question.
"Oh…umm…I'm just…chilling here." Gloyd sheepishly replied. "What about you?" He asked.
"Well, Adorabreezle told me that you were here, waiting for someone." Vanellope said.
"Oh, that. Uhh…that is true." Gloyd muttered.
"So who is that special someone?" He blushed as she asked that.
"It's…uhh…umm…well…" He stuttered, blushing harder. His heart stung him as he covered his mouth, coughing. This scared Vanellope.
"Gloyd?! Are you okay?!" Vanellope asked, worried.
"I-*cough*-I-I'm fine…n-no need to…"
Vanellope suddenly clutched his shirt, and without thinking, she started unbuttoning it. Midway through, she stopped and placed her ear on his now bare chest to check the pulse. His face was as red as Jubileena's hair for comparison. He couldn't hold it in and started coughing up the flowers. One flower landed on Vanellope's nose, and when she looked at it, she recognized the genus of flower.
It was a vanilla flower. Her favorite.
She looked down and saw more blood covered vanilla flowers on the ground. She then looked up at Gloyd, who was covering his mouth as he kept coughing up the flowers.
"Gloyd…what is all of this?" She asked, confused, worried and angered, all at the same time.
"I-I-I'm sorry, Vanellope...I'm so sorry…I hid this from you because I didn't want to hurt you…but I guess I did anyway…" Gloyd teared up.
Feeling a little hurt, Vanellope stood up and looked down at the vanilla flowers, unsure what to do now.
"Listen. The thing is…I-I love you. And…I understand if you don't feel the same way because…you know…I…"
Gloyd avoided eye contact with her as he trailed off, and froze when he felt something soft pressing against his lips.
A kiss.
Vanellope had kissed him, and he was left paralyzed. He didn't know what to do. He wanted to believe that this was real but couldn't. He thought that this was fake and it was another figment of imagination. He needed proof. He short circuited when he felt his lips being opened and feeling something wet enter his mouth.
That's when he realized that this was all real. He closed his eyes and melted into the kiss, pulling Vanellope closer to him. The stinging feeling in his heart got weaker, and eventually, it disappeared. The Hanahaki disease was gone from him for good.
They pulled away, panting heavily.
Gloyd looked at Vanellope as she wiped something off her lips. He blinked, buzzed from the sensation he was desperate to get a feel of, only to get even more than he bargained for. Not that he wasn't happy with it.
"V-Vanellope…" Vanellope looked back at him with a smile and held his hands. They were so warm.
"I've been waiting for you to say this." She admitted.
"Y-you have?" Gloyd asked in disbelief. Vanellope nodded. "Are you trying to say that…"
"Y-yeah. The truth is, I love you too." She cut him off.
Tears dripped down the boy's cheeks as he heard the 4 words, and he leaned closer. He was about to kiss her when…
"Yes! He finally did it!" They both jumped and looked down at the pile of snow after hearing a female voice shouting. Swizzle, Minty and Adorabreezle were there, hiding behind the pile.
"Mintz, be quiet! They're going to hear us!" The daredevil yelled.
"Sorry! I couldn't resist!" Minty blurted out.
"Will both of you please be quiet?! They can hear us!" Adoarbreezle warned in a whisper.
"Sorry, Big Sis Breezy…" Swizzle and Minty sighed, angering the skiing expert.
"Stop calling me Big Sis!" Adorabreezle yelled, scaring the two.
"Run!" Minty screamed.
She and Swizzle ran away from Adorabreezle as she started chasing after them out of anger.
Gloyd and Vanellope looked at each other, confused about what just happened. There was awkward silence between the two.
"So…" Vanellope broke the silence. "Wanna go follow these 3 and see what happens?" She suggested.
"I'm in. I bet that Swizz and Minty will evade Adorabreezle." Gloyd smirked.
"I bet she'll catch them!" Vanellope said confidently.
"Okay! What are we betting for?" Gloyd asked.
At that moment, a sugar butterfly flew past them in between their faces. They looked around. There were a few more sugar butterflies. They then looked back at each other.
"A kiss!" They shouted at the same time.
"Let's go now!" Gloyd was about to head down when Vanellope stopped him, grabbing his wrist.
"You should cover up your body first." The president smirked.
Confused, he looked at himself and saw that his shirt was still half unbuttoned. He blushed deeply, as he buttoned it back up.
"Shouldn't have worn this…" He muttered to himself.
Vanellope surprised Gloyd by glitching towards him for a hug and pecking him on the cheek. He let out a squeak from this sudden action, causing her to blush. She had to admit that he looked very cute when scared.
"Get off!" He shouted.
"Okay, whatever you say, scaredy-cat." Vanellope giggled as she got off of him.
"I am not!" He pouted.
"Prove it!" She glitched away, now standing in front of him with a smirk.
"You asked for it, Princess." Gloyd smiled mischievously as he ran down the mountain towards her. She simply glitched away from him.
They were running around, chasing each other playfully and forgetting about what might happened to their friends. Gloyd eventually tackled Vanellope, causing them both to fall down to the snow, hugging. As they laughed, sugar butterflies fluttered around them, shining brightly. This was just the start of a new relationship between them, and they knew that it would last for as long as they could remember.
