SWAMP THING "GOD IS GREEN"

Script by Bernard Schaffer

What follows is an original unpublished comic script featuring DC's Swamp Thing. This is the Alan Moore Era (with Art by Stephen R, Bissette, John Totleben, and Rick Veitch) iteration of the character. It features proper comic formatting and panel cues.

I'm offering it here for anyone to use as a guide for any aspiring comic artists to practice on, or use to show their work to prospective employers. Just remember, Swamp Thing is a licensed character that belongs to DC, and we are borrowing it strictly to pay tribute.

If you do use the script, or any portion of it, all I ask is two things:

1. Credit me as the writer (Bernard Schaffer)

2. Show me what you come up with, I'd love to see it. (Email: Contact )

Good luck!

NOTE:

For those just reading the script, I hope you enjoyed returning to the Green as much as I did. If you enjoy it enough, I'll write more.

PAGE ONE

1. A small panel filled-in with swirling dark green (if in color). All black, if black and white.

2. Bubbles rise up within the panel.

CAPTION (SWAMP THING)

How…long?

3. Roots and strange looking aquatic-plants drift across the panel.

CAPTION (SWAMP THING)

How long…have I slumbered…

Deep…within the Green?

4. A bed of silt lies at the bottom of the panel, similar to the ocean floor. Embedded in the silt, we see SWAMP THING partially-submerged. He has become a fossil, with only

parts of his face and arms and legs visible.

CAPTION (SWAMP THING)

Not…long enough.

5. Closeup of Swamp Thing's face. We only see the ridges of his eyes and outline of his jaw through the silt and sedimentation. His closed eyes are covered with dirt and his

face has hardened into wood.

PAGE TWO

1. A light flickers in the distance, but it is enough to interrupt the tranquility of the Green. Its fiery orange glow casts against Swamp Thing's face.

SOUND EFFECT: Pfffft

2. The Green is dark and calm once more. The flare has gone out. But a small red circle of light remains. It is a lit cigarette, although we can only see its tip.

SOUND EFFECT: Krrrrkkkk

SOUND EFFECT: Snap!

3. Swamp Thing's eyes open beneath the dirt, glowing red against the green pool. He has been disturbed, and is angered by it.

4. It must be nothing, he decides. Swamp Thing closes his eyes once more to settle back in.

CAPTION (SWAMP THING)

Only a dream…

How much longer…must I rest…until I am rid…

of these…vestiges of humanity?

SOUND EFFECT: Krrrrrrkkkk

5. Swamp Thing sits up from the bed of silt, still connected to it by roots and dirt and plants. His lower torso is still submerged, but he is looking up, peering far above.

SOUND EFFECT: Snap!

PAGE THREE

1. The red light flares against Swamp Thing's face, being cast down from the world above. NOTE: The flare is occurring each time the cigarette is being inhaled. Dialogue is occurring in caption-form because in the Green you communicate telepathically.

CAPTION (JOHN CONSTANTINE)

Awake then?

I thought that might do the trick.

SOUND EFFECT: Pfffft

2. Swamp Thing's eyes burn red with fury.

CAPTION (SWAMP THING)

Who dares intrude…on this place?

3. A match is struck in the darkness above, being held to the end of a new cigarette.

SOUND EFFECT: Ssssss

4. JOHN CONSTANTINE smirks as he puts the cigarette into his mouth. He stands in silhouette, with none of his surroundings revealed.

CAPTION (CONSTANTINE)

Come on, mate.

5. Swamp Thing lies back down in the silt, attempting to settle himself once more. He is unconcerned and unwilling to be goaded.

CAPTION (SWAMP THING)

I no longer care…for your tricks…Constantine

Even you…are not so bold…as to intrude here

PAGE FOUR

1. A flashback to the Parliament of Trees in its full glory. It sits in a lush section of the South American jungle, where several former Earth Elementals have taken their place to

become one with nature.

They now take the form of enormous trees, forming a circle where visitors may stand.

A tribe of intimidating Brazilian natives guard the entrance, armed with spears and bows and blowguns. On either side of the entrance are two stone totems, with the faces of

the Elementals carved into them.

CAPTION (SWAMP THING)

This place is forbidden...to humans…

unless they are summoned.

And I…did not summon you.

2. The Green is peaceful once more. Swamp Thing's eyes close. Silt has already begun to build up within them.

CAPTION (CONSTANTINE)

That right?

3. Constantine is holding a thick branch in his hands. He's bending it backward from the trunk of a tree, forcing it all the way back. The wood along its sides is beginning to

split.

SOUND EFFECT: Krrrrrkkkk

CAPTION (SWAMP THING)

What…are you doing?

4. The branch breaks off in Constantine's hands, a massive length of wood, ripped free from the trunk.

SOUND EFFECT: SNAP!

CAPTION (CONSTANTINE)

Getting your attention.

Which one's you by the way?

I can't tell through all the moss and bird shite.

You all bloody look the same now.

PAGE FIVE

1. Swamp Thing breaks free of the silt bed, with his fists raised high over his head.

CAPTION (SWAMP THING)

Enough! Begone from this place…

You do not…belong here

CAPTION (CONSTANTINE)

Funny.

Was just thinking the same.

2. Swamp Thing's form dissolves into the silt. He has abandoned that body, leaving nothing but a disintegrating husk behind.

CAPTION (CONSTANTINE)

Now, I think this one's you.

I shouldn't have had that last cup this morning.

Seen any loos around here?

Y'don't mind if I water you a bit, do you, mate?

3. The disembodied Swamp Thing is racing up through the green like a comet. He is nothing more than a glowing light, rocketing upward toward the surface.

CAPTION (CONSTANTINE)

Looks like you could use it, to be honest.

CAPTION (CONSTANTINE)

Hang on.

SOUND EFFECT: dribble dribble dribble

SOUND EFFECT: fsssssshhhh

CAPTION (CONSTANTINE)

Ahhh.

4. The daytime jungle floor erupts as Swamp Thing's consciousness bursts through it, an explosion of roots and dirt and worms from deep beneath the earth.

5. The roots take shape, forming his feet first. We can see the vines and plants winding around his lower torso, building him from the ground up.

PAGE SIX

1. Swamp Thing is fully formed from the indigenous plants of the jungle around him, with the colorful heliconia and passion flowers framing his face. His shoulders are lined

with bright red monkey brush vine, and murumuru palm leaves. He is bent forward, fists clenched, and snarling.

SWAMP THING

Where…are you?

(P6 cont.)

2. Close up on Swamp Thing's face, furious.

CAPTION (SWAMP THING)

It takes a moment…to understand…

3. Swamp Thing's face changes to wide-eyed surprise.

CAPTION (SWAMP THING)

I wait…for my eyes to finish developing…

so that I can be sure.

And then…I am sure.

4. The Parliament of Trees stands in ruin. The jungle all around him is barren and dead. The old Earth Elementals have rotted. Some have collapsed. There are no guardians.

The stone totems have been toppled.

PAGE SEVEN

1. Swamp Thing reaches to touch one of the old Earth Elementals. It is one of the few remaining trees that is intact, a massive tree with sprawling leaves. Its face still

remains in the center of the tree.

SWAMP THING

Ancient one…what has happened here?

2. The face crumbles at Swamp Thing's touch. The tree has rotted from within. He is left holding nothing but a handful of sawdust.

3. Swamp Thing lowers his head and closes his eyes, listening.

CAPTION (SWAMP THING)

I enter…the Green…and search for my elders…

I hear…nothing.

4. Swamp Thing looks around, searching for Constantine.

SWAMP THING

Constantine…reveal yourself.

Tell me…what has befallen…this place.

CAPTION (SWAMP THING)

No broken branches…on the ground…

No recent footprints…

5. The jungle is empty and vacant all around him. The trees are brown and lifeless. There are no animal noises. All is stark, and silent.

CAPTION (SWAMP THING)

Constantine…was never here.

No one is.

CAPTION (SWAMP THING)

There is nothing…Only insects…

Come to feast…on the decay.

PAGE EIGHT

1. Swamp Thing walks into the jungle, dazed by the lack of life. The colorful flowers and lush foliage growing across his back has turned dull. Flowers and leaves are falling off

of him as he walks.

CAPTION (SWAMP THING)

Where are the ones…who stood guard…these many centuries?

Where are…the creatures…and birds…of the jungle?

2. As he walks, the roots and plants that form his feet and legs begin to unravel, leaving them much too small to support his body.

SOUND EFFECT: Fwip! Snap!

3. Swamp Thing has fallen. He is left kneeling on the ground. His entire body is dull and gray.

CAPTION (SWAMP THING)

I must…be weak…

From having slept…so long

4. He raises his hand and inspects it. His entire body is disintegrating. Dirt and roots fall away from him, leaving his arm only half-formed.

CAPTION (SWAMP THING)

No…

It is not I…who has become…weak…

5. Swamp Thing lays his palms flat against the ground, drawing up renewed strength. The flowers adorning him grow bright again, as new roots intertwine around his body,

reinforcing it.

CAPTION (SWAMP THING)

The surface earth here has been mined…and stripped

…of mineral and nutrient.

I must…reach deeper…for what I need.

PAGE NINE

1. We are just below the surface of the earth, looking up. We can see Swamp Thing above us, with roots descending from him down through the humus, and topsoil, and into

the first eluviation layer. Anywhere the Swamp Thing is making contact, palms, knees, feet, the roots are winding down out of him. Imagine as if he's growing sentient

tentacles that are seeking their way toward the earth's core.

CAPTION (SWAMP THING)

The earth responds…to my touch…like an old lover…

warming me…welcoming me once again…

But something is wrong…I sense panic…

2. In the cold expanse of Antarctica, we see a gathering of shaggy tussock grass. There is a baby seal nestled in one of the grasses.

CAPTION (SWAMP THING, OFFSCREEN)

The tussock grass…in Antarctica…tells me it is…too warm for its children to grow.

3. In a dry African field, we see a huge Acacia tree, with giraffes nipping at its leaves.

CAPTION (SWAMP THING, OFFSCREEN)

The Saharan acacia tell me…now…there is only drought…and flood…

4. In a dense Nassau County New York forest, we see a tall, towering, beech tree.

CAPTION (SWAMP THING, OFFSCREEN)

In New York…a beech tree that has stood…

for three hundred years…

Tells me…it's older sibling…was snapped in half…by a tornado…

where none should be…and more are coming.

PAGE TEN

1. Swamp Thing continues on through the jungle. There are two columns of smoke ahead of him in the distance, rising up into the sky beyond the tree line.

CAPTION (SWAMP THING)

I search…for signs of life…in this place.

I find…only death.

2. Swamp Thing emerges from the jungle into a clearing. A human skull sits in the foreground, covered in moss and bugs.

3. A village, long since razed to the ground, with burnt down huts and the skeletons of dead cattle left out to rot.

4. Swamp Thing looks inside one of the burnt huts. He sees the skeletons of a mother cradling her children.

PAGE ELEVEN

1. At the end of the village are the remains of a great battle.

The ground is littered with the skeletons of male villagers. These warriors died defended their home with spears and bows. Many of them are still holding their weapons.

Their skulls are riddled with bullet holes. Beyond them, multiple arrows and spears are stuck in the ground, or sunk into trees. There are no bodies on the opposing side. Just bullet casings.

CAPTION (SWAMP THING)

These…are the humans…who guarded the Parliament of Trees…

I see…no bodies…except theirs…

Whoever…did this…did not even bother…to bury their remains.

PAGE TWELVE

1. The sun is falling, casting the jungle in its warm crimson glow. The twin columns of smokestacks are directly ahead, thick and black. Time has passed as Swamp Thing

journeyed through the jungle. He is adorned now in a different configuration of plants and flowers and leaves, having needed to refresh himself along the way.

CAPTION (SWAMP THING)

There were…two more…villages…both decimated.

2. Swamp Thing pauses by a river and looks down at the current. The crystal blue water is stained with brown oil and yellow toxic byproducts of industrial waste.

CAPTION (SWAMP THING)

Throughout…human history…running water has been the source…of all civilization.

The smallest tribes…and largest cities…are built around the river

…and all it provides.

3. Swamp Thing looks up the river toward a massive factory built along the banks.

CAPTION (SWAMP THING)

To destroy that…is beyond folly…

4. Closeup to show the factory is dumping chemical waste from enormous pipes built along the bottom of its foundation. Waste gushes out of them in sickening colors.

CAPTION (SWAMP THING)

…beyond waste.

SOUND EFFECT: pant, pant

5. Back to Swamp Thing, turning his head to listen.

CAPTION (SWAMP THING)

A voice nearby…the first human sound…I have heard…in some time.

DIALOGUE BUBBLE (TEENAGE GIRL, OFFSCREEN)

sob

PAGE THIRTEEN

1. Two armed men from the factory creep through the woods, searching, AK-47's at the ready. The AK-47's have wooden stocks and wooden handles. One is an AMERICAN MERCENARY, the other a member of the Brazilian military named RAMON.

SOUND EFFECT: pant pant

2. Ramon raises a fist in the air, bringing the other man to a halt.

The American mercenary lowers his rifle and smiles.

3. From behind the men, we can see the back of their boots and legs, and beyond them, a TEENAGE BRAZILIAN GIRL, crouched behind a tree.

The girl is gaunt and dressed in rags.

MERCENARY

See what I mean, Ramon?

That's the reason we don't feed the workers late in the day.

4. Roots and plants shoot up from the ground behind the men, forming the foundation of Swamp Thing's feet.

MERCENARY

Keeps 'em too weak to run away after they get done.

5. At the far right, inserted into the panel, we see the Mercenary has pulled a candy bar from his left pocket. He holds it out, smiling cruelly.

MERCENARY

You hungry, girl?

Wanna play a game?

PAGE FOURTEEN

1. In the foreground, the two soldiers are positioned next to one another. The Mercenary is still holding out the candy bar with his left hand, wagging it like a bone for a dog.

In his right hand, we see him holding the AK-47's wooden grip.

On the other side of the frame, Ramon has his left hand on his rifle's wooden stock and his right hand on its wooden grip.

Behind them, Swamp Thing has fully reformed. He towers over them, hidden in shadows. All we see is his shaggy outline, and his glowing red eyes in the fading light.

RAMON

Hmm, I guess she ain't hungry.

MERCENARY

Maybe she needs a different kind of motivation.

2. In a side view of their rifles, a close up look at the natural wood adorning their weapons. We see the swirling patterns and grain that form the weapon's upper and lower

handguards and buttstocks and grips.

MERCENARY

And I'm real good at motivating these little shits.

CAPTION (SWAMP THING)

Man forgets…

3. The wood is growing forth from Ramon's weapon. It stretches out from its surface and slides itself around Ramon's fingers and knuckles and shoulder. He doesn't notice.

RAMON

You think we got time?

MERCENARY

There's always time for that.

CAPTION (SWAMP THING)

For all his plastics…and synthetics…

4. The wood on their rifles seizes their hands, crushing their bones and mangling their fingers.

MERCENARY

EIIEEEEEE

RAMON

AUGGHH

SOUND EFFECT: KRUUUNNNCHH!

CAPTION (SWAMP THING)

All his attempts…

at dominion…over the earth

PAGE FIFTEEN

1. Swamp Thing seizes both the Mercenary and Ramon by their throats. His height and power and terrible personage is terrifying to behold.

CAPTION (SWAMP THING)

All is but a trifle…to the natural world.

2. Swamp Thing lifts both the men up from the ground to his eye level. Their hands are trapped in their rifles. All they can do is gurgle and kick their feet.

3. Swamp Thing slams both of them together with such force, their heads explode in his hands. Red mist sprays between his fingers, filling the air all around him.

The mist obscures the true gore of it all.

SOUND EFFECT: WHOOSH

4. Swamp Thing tosses both broken bodies aside. He is splattered with blood. It gleams in the moonlight and drips from his foliage.

PAGE SIXTEEN

1. Closeup of the teenage Brazilian girl looking up at Swamp Thing. She is wide-eyed and shivering with terror.

2. Swamp Thing bends down in front of her, his face gentle now.

SWAMP THING

You are free…child.

Go…

None…will harm you here…again.

3. Swamp Thing turns and looks over his shoulder, in the direction the men came from.

4. We see the factory's front gate, swarming with armed guards.

There are gun towers on either side of the gate. Razor wire runs along the top of tall walls that stretch for as far as the eye can see.

Men patrol the interior of the compound with AK-47's and guard dogs.

Most importantly, the walls and towers are camouflaged with vines and all manner of vegetation, meant to conceal their movements and armaments from the outside world.

PAGE SEVENTEEN

1. Inside the factory, we see children walking through the hallways, chained together. They are filthy and gaunt from malnourishment.

They walk past a CRUEL GUARD sitting at a desk, who eats a thick sandwich. It is dripping with lettuce and tomato, that he savors, while they look on hungrily.

CRUEL GUARD

Mmmm

CAPTION (SWAMP THING)

Once…I was content…to let humanity be.

2. We see the factory's elaborate, private, dining chamber. The Brazilian COLONEL seated at the head of the table is an obese man, whose round stomach threatens to burst

through his ridiculously-ornate uniform. The table is filled with piles of food, despite the fact that only four people are sitting there.

The Colonel drinks from a golden goblet, encrusted with gems.

To his left, sits American SENATOR DAVID MAYNARD in a business suit, also eating.

To the Colonel's right, two TEENAGE GIRLS dressed in red dresses and formal gloves. Both wear large red flowers in their hair.

They are enslaved workers, plucked from the workers by the Colonel, who clearly has bad intentions toward them.

Standing near the door is an American BODYGUARD, holding an AK-47.

MAYNARD

Colonel, we have much to discuss. My helicopter will arrive in one hour.

COLONEL

Please, there is no hurry. Everything is on schedule.

3. The Colonel indicates the girls sitting to his right, and the full table of food in front of them. The girls look down, ashamed.

COLONEL

What do you want to go back to the States for anyway, eh?

We have everything we need right here, Senator.

Wine. Entertainment. You should stay.

CAPTION (SWAMP THING)

To let mankind…stand on its own…

to rise or fall…without relying

…on my intervention.

4. Senator Maynard wipes his mouth with a napkin.

MAYNARD

I would love to, Colonel.

Unfortunately, the men I answer to

will want an update on your progress here.

CAPTION (SWAMP THING)

Never…did I imagine…in all of their arrogance…

they would attack…the Green.

PAGE EIGHTEEN

1. A closeup view of the large red flowers the teenage girls are wearing in their hair. They both sit with their heads bowed, but the flowers are aimed at the Colonel and

Senator.

2. From within the center of both flowers, we see one of Swamp Things glowing red eyes open.

3. Roots shoot out from the flowers, spindling into the air and winding down toward the table.

4. The Colonel and Senator look on in shock as the roots assemble. At the center of the table, forms Swamp Thing.

COLONEL

Oh meu Deus.

GIRLS

Eeeeiiii!

5. The bodyguard opens fire, his AK-47 bursting to life from the doorway.

MAYNARD (Offscreen)

Shoot it! Shoot, you idiot!

SOUND EFFECT: Brrrrrrraappp!

PAGE NINETEEN

1. Swamp Thing raises his left arm to shield his face against the hail of bullets. The bullets cut through his vegetable form, slicing his arm off at the shoulder.

SOUND EFFECT: Thhhwip!

2. Swamp Thing's severed left arm is laying on the table on a pile of food. He reaches down and picks it up with his good hand. The bodyguard's AK-47 has gone empty.

SOUND EFFECT: klick-klick-klik-klik

MAYNARD

Shoot it again! Hurry! It's injured!

3. Swamp Thing leaps over the heads of the teenage girls, wielding his severed arm high in the air like a club.

The bodyguard looks up in terror. He's trying to reload with a fresh magazine.

The colonel is also trying to draw his own pistol from his belt, but is too fat and uncoordinated to get it free.

4. Swamp Thing slams the bodyguard's head in with his own severed arm, breaking the man's neck.

SOUND EFFECT: Crunch!

5. The Colonel draws his gun to fire.

The floor at his feet is rumbling and breaking apart as roots and plants burst upward through it.

6. A length of thick root shoots up through the floor, impaling the Colonel through his round stomach.

PAGE TWENTY

1. Swamp Thing re-attaches his arm and surveys the damage of the room.

The girls flee through the door behind him.

The Colonel is impaled, and the root that impaled him has penetrated the ceiling above.

Senator Maynard is backed up against the wall, cowering on the opposite side of the room.

MAYNARD

It's you. Mother of God, it's you.

2. Close up on Maynard's face. He is angry and indignant.

MAYNARD

You're that creature that attacked Gotham!

That goddamn thing from the swamps!

3. Swamp Thing looms over him, looking down with glowing red eyes.

SWAMP THING

Your kind…calls me…by so many names…

4. Outside of the facility, high up in the guard towers, we see the guards have been strangled by the vines covering the walls.

Below them, vines and vegetation have also ensnared all of the guards who were patrolling the courtyard.

Children are pouring out through the front gate, running for freedom.

CAPTION (SWAMP THING)

You call me…a creature….

5. The cruel guard who was eating the sandwich in the hallway is dead. He's slumped in his chair, still holding his sandwich. Green lettuce leaks from his ears and nose and

bulging in this throat until it comes out of his mouth. The hallway beyond him is filled with dead soldiers. They have been killed by vines, or plants, or roots that burst through

the walls and ground.

CAPTION (SWAMP THING)

You call me…a thing….

PAGE TWENTY-ONE

1. Closeup to Swamp Thing, glaring down at the Senator and grabbing him by the collar. Behind him, full trees are beginning to rise up through the floor and break apart the

ceiling above them.

SWAMP THING

But I…am a god

SOUND EFFECT: kkkk-krash!

2. Senator Maynard looks up in panic. He is trying to pry Swamp Thing's wooden fingers off of him so he can escape.

The entire room is shaking, ready to cave in.

MAYNARD

W-what are you doing? You'll kill us both!

SOUND EFFECT: rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

3. The lights have gone out of Swamp Thing's eyes. He is no longer occupying that body. The wood of his hands and arms has fused together to keep Maynard from escaping.

MAYNARD

Let go!

SOUND EFFECT: rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

5. The ground just beyond the factory trembles as Swamp Thing emerges up through it.

6. The factory explodes, filling the night with its flames. A gas line has ruptured. Glass is shattered. The smokestacks crumble. Throughout the entire building, enormous trees

and roots have broken it apart.

Swamp Thing stands in the jungle, watching the destruction.

SOUND EFFECT: Pa-Poooooom!

CAPTION (SWAMP THING)

And you…have incurred…my wrath.

PAGE TWENTY-TWO

1. A city council meeting in Houma, Louisiana. In the audience, ABIGAIL CABLE and CHESTER WILLIAMS stand at the back, holding signs that read, "Protect Our Swamp!"

Both Abigail (Abby) and Chester have aged since we last saw them. Abby is now in her mid-thirties, and the black streak in her silver hair has turned gray.

Chester is in his fifties, but still a hippie, still wearing a coat with fringe, and his hair long, but the coat is worn and he looks out of place.

There are only a handful of PROTESTORS standing with Abbie and Chester. Seated all around them are bored-looking attendees, annoyed by all the racket.

The city COUNCILMAN heading the meeting is banging his gavel, trying to bring them to order.

TEXT: Houma, Louisiana

PROTESTERS

Save our swamp! Out with the rats!

COUNCILMAN

Order! Order!

SOUND EFFECT: bap bap bap

2. Close up on the Councilman's face, reading the paperwork in front of him.

COUNCILMAN

By a vote of seven to zero, we hereby vote

to allocate an additional four hundred

acres of swamp land for industrial use.

PROTESTORS

Boooooo!

Fascist!

Sell-Out!

COUNCILMAN

Meeting adjourned.

3. The meeting's attendees file out onto the nighttime street. Abbie is going through the door, and Chester is hurrying to catch up with her.

CHESTER

Abbie, wait up!

4. They stand together under a streetlight. Abbie tucks her hair behind her right ear, looking beautiful in the overhead light.

CHESTER

Do you want to get coffee or something?

ABBIE

Maybe some other time. It's late.

5. Chester smiles weakly.

CHESTER

Ok. It was good to get together again, though, wasn't it?

Giving hell to the man, just like old times.

6. Abbie walks away from him into the night, leaving him standing alone under the streetlight.

ABBIE

The old times are over, Chester. The other side won.
