Chapter 01:Music Fairy
Hands reached up her ears as soon as the senior high student passed by the plaza. The place is more crowded than usual and even more noisy than necessary. A full decorated stage is surrounded by a pack of people, screaming and yelling in excitement. Most of them are students from the nearby schools. They became even more loud when a group of people came into the stage, waving at the fans that are screaming at the top of their lungs.
"Hello, everyone! Thank you for coming today! We are the N4N Band and we hope..."
The high school student but her lower lip hard and quickened her steps just to escape those ear piercing noises. The screams tortured her ears more when that so-called band started playing, she couldn't help but to scream in annoyance and pain.
"Damn! Who do they think they are?! Their arrangement and techniques aren't even that great! They dare to call that music? HAH! Having a concert with that low quality music? Tsk! What's with that standard? The organizer must be insane, inviting those noobs to perform. And what's with this group brainless idiots idolizing another bunch of incapable idiots?!..."
The girl continued to complain, pressing her palms harder on each side of her head. But no matter how much she put pressure on her ears, she still could hear the horrible sounds of that band and screams coming from those people.
"Wretched school! Why do it have to be far from our house?!" The girl continued muttering curses and complaints. She made a mental note to always bring her noise cancellation headphones or else, her ear drums might burst sinner than later.
The girl sighed as soon as she saw the gate of the academy. Her ears are still ringing after that experience but at least, the area she is walking in is a bit quieter than the plaza. She breathed out a sigh before taking out a comb from her bag's pocket to fix her messy crimson hair that was ruin by running all the way to her school. After that, she straightened out her wrinkled uniform. Checking herself once more, she nodded and began to enter the school through the fancy decorated gated.
Her name is Hino Kahoko. A second year that was transferred into Seiso Academy a week ago. Sixteen years old, turning 17 on February 27th. She was quite noticeable because of her fiery red hair and amber colored eyes. Has a very VERY sharp sense of hearing.
So sharp that she can hear a whisper 15 meters away from her. This is one of the reason why she hates walking to school. She would met many kinds of noises on her way to and from the school. She was doing just fine when she was studying in a private girl's school a hundred meters away from her house. But her mom just had to ruin it by transferring her to a school that is located far from home.
In her previous school, at least it's quiet because of strict rules and regulations. And she could just run home every after class to avoid other unnecessary noises. But by transferring to this school, she had to walk on noisy roads and that damn plaza that everyone was hanging out to. There's also those damn concerts every Thursdays.
Kahoko sighed again. She hate that her mom confiscated her laptop to force her to transfer. It's so unfair. How can she kill her time now that her laptop isn't with her? Her older sister is also so stingy to even let her borrow hers. But she can't go out! Those noises will kill her! Walking dejectedly, Kahoko began to pick up conversations from other students like her.
"Hey, it's almost time to announce the participants for the concours." A girl, who is wearing a white uniform told her friend. The other smiled at the girl and answered while walking towards the pathway to the right.
"Yeah. I wonder who will be chosen?"
"I bet it will be someone of superior grades."
"Tsukimori-san would definitely be selected, right?"
"Ah, definitely."
Two girls in white uniform giggled as they moved on to the topic of hot guys that are attending the academy. Kahoko shook her head and ignored the noises around her. Opposite to the direction those girls walked in, Kahoko turned left together with some students wearing black uniforms.
Seiso Academy, a prestigious one. It is divided into two departments; Music Department and General Education Department. The students wearing white belongs to the Music Department while ones wearing black are from the Gen. Ed. Department. Of course, those from the white ones studies music and everything that relates to that. While the black ones studies everything that is unrelated to music.
Speaking of Seiso Academy, Kahoko remembered a story about that school. Some girls who she befriended told her on her first day. That this school is being blessed by a fairy. Well to cut the story short, a man traveled around the world learning all about music. He met an injured fairy and helped him recover. The fairy was so grateful to that man and took a liking to him. They became friends. The man told that fairy about his dream of building a music school. The fairy, indebt to him by saving his life, promised to bless his school.
And swala~. After a few years, the man came back to his hometown and build Seiso Academy. There is also a huge statue of a fairy with his wand at the entrance of the school. This must be the reason why those so-called legends about fairies started. It was unknown whether or not there really is a fairy lurking in this school but that is what the legends said.
But Kahoko still cannot comprehend why there is a Gen. Ed. Department in this school when it was originally built as a music school alone. The red haired girl shrugged and made her way towards her classroom. She can hear the laughter of her friends even before she entered the room. The girl suppressed annoyance from the noises and flashed a smile towards her friends.
"Good Morning, guys."
"Kahoko! You're on time for once!" Her friend teased her as she placed her bag on top of her desk.
Mio and Nao smiled at me. They sit beside and behind me. They are the ones that at least made my life a bit enjoyable while studying in this school. I just felt comfortable while I'm with them even though one of them is a bit loud.
"Kaho-chan! Kaho-chan. Did you know about the hidden story behind the concours?" Nao asked her, her eyes twinkling enthusiastically. Kahoko raised her eyebrow, signalling her friend to continue even though she has no interest in it. It was because their opinion doesn't matter as long as their dear Nao wanted to speak. Nothing can stop her naughty mouth. And from the glint of her eyes, Kahoko and Mio was sure she will talk about something related to romance.
"Here we go again. What's that concours you're talking about?" Mio asked, rolling her eyes but she still listen to her friend's next words.
"Concours! It's the musical competition organized by the school! I hear the participants are only from the music department but nevertheless ..." Nao giggled bashfully, prolonging her last words in suspense. With a smirk, she held Kahoko's hands and sighed dreamily. "There is a fairy that is hidden in this school. And this fairy helped in the romance of two participants! Two violinist, playing with all of their strength to win while loving each other! The love between two rivals! Kyaah! How romantic is that?!"
Kahoko pulled her hands aways and hid behind Mio. The two of them sweat dropped at the sight of their friend, happily fantasizing about how great it is to have that in real life. Mio and Kahoko looked at each other before silently agreeing to just ignore their rambling friend. Not long after, their adviser entered their classroom and they started the homeroom.
Concours. As said earlier, it is a music competition organized by the school. But unlike what others believed, it is not only limited to the music department students. It's open to all the students in Seiso Academy but the standards are high and the judges are really strict during auditions. The real judges are also well-known music critics and professional musicians. That's why international fame awaits the one who wins.
And about the fairy they are talking about. Kahoko doesn't believe in fantasy characters. They're in the 21st century. She doesn't even believe in ghosts, much more about a fairy.
Kahoko shrugged and threw the concours topic at the back of her mind. She's no longer related to music anyway. Not anymore. Kahoko tried listened to what their adviser is saying, covering one ear. Noises from the class next door are very audible as it mixed with their teacher's nagging. Kahoko silently clicked her tongue and leaned on her desk, both hands pressing on her ears.
How boring.
-oOo-
Kahoko sighed in defeat on her way to the faculty room to receive her punishment. She failed to do her homework yesterday and she forgot about it this morning. Not only that, she was caught by the teacher when she was rushing to finish it in the classroom. She's really unlucky today.
"Oh! Hino-san, perfect timing. Take these to the Music Department. Class 2-A, okay? " Her English teacher saw her at the door ways and and shoved a stack of papers and books on her arms before running out, leaving Kahoko alone.
Kahoko stood there for a second, contemplating what just happened before sighing in annoyance. That teacher really is a bit much. Her back is already hunching because of the heavy load that she passed on to her! The red head lass let out a ground and straightened her back while still holding on to the papers and books.
"To music department, eh?"
Kahoko never entered the music department building. They're at the opposite side of their own building so Music and Gen. Ed. students never really cross paths that much except the entrance. Kahoko do not want to go but she knew she would be in a very big problem if she doesn't deliver these papers to that classroom. Kahoko heard that the teacher is really strict and terrorizing so she better not offend her.
Kahoko turned to the corner and was about to step down the stairs when someone suddenly bumped into her, causing her to lose balance. She let go of the papers and reached for a thing to grab on but her hands cannot reach anything. Losing all hope, she closed her eyes, praying she'll come out of it alive and no bone fractures.
"Kyaah!"
"Watch out!"
Kahoko felt her feet leaving the ground as something strong snaked around her waist. Kahoko opened her eyes in shock when pain didn't visit her. She noticed the arms that was securing her safe and the papers and books that were scattered on the stairs below them.
"Whoa.. That was close." A whisper was heard above her and Kahoko can smell mint coming from the person behind her. Kahoko froze as her brain processed the whole ordeal.
"Waah! That scared me!"
The guy who caught me, thankfully, helped me on my feet as he bowed in apology. "Sorry."
"Oh, oh! Yeah! I'm sorry too." Kahoko also bowed in apology before walking down the stairs to collect those scattered pieces of papers. In daze, she kneeled down and picked the mess up. She couldn't believe she nearly fell down the stairs.
"Let me help you."
He helped the girl collect them and Kahoko was about to get the papers on his hands when he suddenly hid it away. Kahoko raised her head in confusion and tilted her head in question. Now that she had a clear look of who saved him, she couldn't believe how tall he was. His limbs are also long and looked so strong. He must be part of the track team or any club that requires physical training.
"Where will you deliver these to? I will deliver it with you." The guys answered her silent question. Happy that someone had lessen the load, the red head girl smiled at him and bowed her head. "Really?! Thanks!"
The two of them walked the pathway going to the Music department, passing by the small garden that was surrounded by the building. Students passed by, giggling and chatting loudly with each other. Kahoko clicked her tongue in irritation, wishing to cover her ears. This is why she hates schools. She really need to bring her noise cancellation headphones.
"So...what's your name?" A low voice came from above her. Kahoko looked up and saw the guy who saved her.
"Ah! I'm Hino Kahoko. Class 2-2. You are?"
"Tsuchiura Ryotarou. Also a second year in in Class 2-5." The guy smiled at her as she reciprocated it back.
Kahoko raised a brow in confusion. The moment she saw his face. Kahoko suddenly felt a sense of familiarity. It's her first time hearing his name but she found his face a bit familiar. Did she saw him once in the hallways. They do study in the same building. But that's not it. Kahoko's sure of it.
Before Kahoko even continue thinking about it, the two of them are already in front of the Music Department building. The two of them opened the door of the Music Department building and headed to the third floor while earning glances from the white uniformed students as they passed by.
Noises once again, entered Kahoko's ears. She frowned. She wanted to run away from this place if not for the task her teacher gave her. Chatting and whispers asking as to why two students from the Gen. Ed. Department came to their department. She can also hear some music from the classrooms they passed by.
"...the rhythm's not right...pressing the wrong key ...it's okay since she's only been practicing for a week? Don't make me laugh. She made 5 mistakes in a few seconds. You call that music? How pitiful..." Kahoko muttered to herself, cruelly evaluating each performance the students made. They're practicing inside their classroom but the sound can still be heard by Kahoko's sharp pair of ears.
"...-No-san... Hino-san! Hino-san!"
Kahoko snapped out of it and raised her head. Tsuchiura was looking at her in worry, one hand grabbing her right arm. Kahoko was about to ask him what's wrong when a cold baritone voice suddenly came from behind.
"Could you move aside? You're in the way."
The two black uniformed students instantly jumped and made way for the student. Kahoko gave a light bow and apologies. "S-sorry!"
Kahoko stared at the guy. She felt like she had seen him somewhere before. The same feeling she had felt when she first met Tsuchiura a while ago. She was about to ask the guy what is his name when Tsuchiura beats her to it.
"Excuse me. Since you're entering this class, can you take these in?" Tsuchiura asked the guy and even offered the paper but the guy in white uniform just gave them an uninterested and cold gaze.
"Take them in yourself. It has nothing to do with me." He answered before turning his back towards them. Tsuchiura's eyebrows furrowed in confusion and annoyance because of his rude actions. Even Kahoko was annoyed by his sentence. The male Gen. Ed. student was about to confront the guy but the white uniformed student already went to his seat.
"..what was that? The heck?!" Tsuchiura tried to complain but he couldn't find the right words but these.
Kahoko also frowned at that guys rude behaviour. That guy has a beautiful cerulean hair and a pair of yellowish brown eyes. He could be called handsome but lacks the personality to match his looks. Kahoko shrugged and rudely entered the classroom. Tsuchiura found it inappropriate to entered but still followed the girl inside.
"E-excuse me. You're not allowed to enter other classroom other than your class!" A student came to them but Kahoko didn't answer and placed the materials on the teacher's table. The guy with her also followed suit.
"Excuse me?!" The student spoke louder, making Kahoko flinch.
"That student gave us permission to enter." Kahoko answered him while pointing at the cerulean haired student at the back of the class. Kahoko didn't care about what happened after that. She just grabbed Tsuchiura's arm and quietly left the classroom.
"Tsk. That guy is rude. I hope I will never have to deal with him again."
"Yeah. Me too." Tsuchiura also agreed as they walked down the stairs. "But the atmosphere here is really different."
"Yeah. The building itself appears very old. The architectural design here is very different from ours. Their uniform is also also have different style." Kahoko nodded.
The Gen. Ed. Department building was designed using the modern architecture while the Music Department building was not. And while the Music Students use scarf ties, the Gen. Ed. students use neckties.
"Anyway, thank you for helping me carry those materials."
"No problem. You're pretty cool back then. Can't believe you pushed the responsibility to that guy." Tsuchiura chuckled as he reminisce the scene just now.
"Well, he did say 'Take them in yourself' so he really did gave us permission one way or another." Kahoko shrugged but her face showed victory and smugness.
"You're right." Tsuchiura answered and smiled at her. He looked down his wristwatch and saw the time. "My next class is in fifteen minutes so I'll go ahead."
"Oh! Is that so? Sorry to keep you so long." Kahoko slightly bowed at him.
"No worries. Later." Tsuchiura smiled and waved at her.
"Later."
Her next class is P.E. and their teacher's not in today so she have an hour to roam around in leisure. She didn't walk to her classroom since she knew her classmates will be noisy since the teacher is gone. She didn't want to torture her ears by staying there.
"Why can't anyone see me?! Why?! Please at least hear my voice! I'm running out of time!"
Kahoko frowned at the tiny voice that just entered her ears. The voice seems to belong that of a child. Kahoko looked around her, surveying the area but she had not seen a single shadow of a child. In fact, she's the only person in that pathway. She looked around again, concentrating in case she heard that tiny voice again.
"Oh no! It's almost the deadline! Waah!"
Kahoko snapped her head up, she was sure the voice came from above her. She knew it was impossible since there is no near building above her. The nearest building is a hundred metres away from her but the voice sounds so near. She was very sure it comes from above.
"Kyaah! You can see me! You can see me right?! Perfect! I am Lili. You'll be the sixth person—"
Kahoko didn't bother to listen to that creature as she ran away from the garden. She convinced herself that what she just seen is a bug, a glowing bug or a firefly. But she had never seen a bug that speaks! She may not trust her eyes but she has 100 percent trust on her ears. They can never go wrong.
"Kaho-chan! What's wrong with you?!" Nao asked her as soon as she entered the classroom. Kahoko's face was devoid of blood as she staggered towards her seat. The strength she used for running completely left her.
"Kahoko-chan?!"
"Hino-san?"
"What's happening?"
"Is she alright?"
Kahoko heard her classmates asking her what's wrong but her head is spinning as she recalled what just happened. She can't believe it. She shook her head to throw that memory out, forcing herself to calm down But as soon as she raised her head to answer her worried classmates, she saw that little creature above here.
"Ah! So your name is Hino Kahoko? You have no manners at all. You can't just leave when someone is talking to you."
"...t-that.. N-nao, Mio...that..." Kahoko stuttered as she raised her hand to point at that 'bug' but they just stared at her worriedly, not understanding what she is seeing.
"Kahoko-chan? You alright? You're so pale!"
"No one else but you can see me, Kahoko-san."
Kahoko gasped, feeling so suffocated. It was not long before all she can see is black. Hoping that all of it was just a weird dream.
