Greetings, my name is Mist-32, Warlock of the Future War Cult, or I suppose I should say, formerly. The following is a compilation of my thoughts surrounding the arrival of the Endless Night, of unexpected allies, and of possible uprisings. Our beloved Last City had become victim to a ceaseless night brought upon by a Vex simulation. Of course, the countless Guardians, including myself, had dealt with the Vex many times before and soaked entire planets in oceans of radiolarian fluid, but the Vex responsible were locked deep inside their networks, somewhere we could not go. Not without assistance, anyways. The Warlock Vanguard Ikora Rey had come into contact with an Eliksni by the name of Mithrax, who was regarded as one of the few remaining "splicers" in existence. Splicers were those within Fallen houses that utilized cybernetics to help enhance and augment their fellow House members. Mithrax, however, was considered sacred, as he was capable of accessing the Vex network, something that could help the City infinitely.
He was tracked down on Europa and, rather surprisingly, agreed to help us. In exchange, he asked us to provide shelter for his respective House, the House of Light. A controversial decision, of course, but one that was deemed necessary to end the night. With House Light's assistance, we had begun operations against the many Vex minds that plagued the City. Obviously, even with the proven effectiveness of said splicer technology, there were those that were still vehemently opposed to our new Eliksni neighbors. The Director, Lakshmi-2, had made her thoughts very clear to the City, and to the Vanguard. She had publicly denounced Ikora Rey's decision to allow the House of Light to set up shelter within the City walls. Many members of the War Cult, including myself had, through the use of the Device, foreseen futures of the Fallen overrunning the City, leaving nothing but death and destruction in their wake. It was indeed a terrifying possibility.
Having said that, however, we had also foreseen futures involving far less destructive outcomes, such as House Light simply leaving Earth peacefully once the night had ended, or even integrating into the City. The Director had seen those futures too, of course, she admitted as much. With that knowledge in mind, it had puzzled me to no end as to why she seemed adamant to avoid a peaceful outcome, and drive the City into war? We believed war was an inevitability, something that could be delayed, but not avoided altogether. Even if it did not seem like it, none of us enjoyed this outcome, but we knew it would happen either way. As the weeks continued, her distrust grew into full scale paranoia, something that seemed far too uncharacteristic of such a brilliant mind as hers. It was then, after many weeks of sunless skies, that we discovered the mastermind of the Endless Night. It was none other than the Witch Queen, Savathun, once a sister to Oryx, The Taken King.
She had control of a Vex mind called Quria, long ago being built to study the Hive and their Sword Logic, but has since been under the Witch Queen's influence. The minds of the War Cult had also realized that if Quria could cause a simulation that would directly affect the City, it could easily manipulate those that used the Device, which was of Vex origin. It was a very real possibility that Quria, and by extension Savathun, was manipulating Lakshmi-2 to cause division within our ranks, perhaps even showing her a future that may not happen. Many of us had told her of this possibility, and she was aware of the dangers that Quria posed... but despite all reason, she continued using the Device. None of us could understand why. It went against any kind of concrete logic and sense. Why would she continue to put herself at risk of Quria, and Savathun? What knowledge was worth potentially losing herself to the Taken? I had thought about it long and hard, and I had finally come to a conclusion.
I remembered when she had tried to warn the Vanguard of the Cabal attack on the City, just before the Red War. They never heeded her warnings of Dominus Ghaul capturing the Traveler and stripping us of our Light. Then, with the Eliksni within the City, she had said to us that her warnings will not go unheard. They would not be quiet. This was an act of revenge to her. To one up the Vanguard for not heeding her warnings. She wanted to be seen as the hero of the City, to be proven right, even if it means starting a war within our walls, and it only got worse from there. One of our companions had witnessed Lakshmi-2 speaking with Executor Hideo, leader of the New Monarchy. They spoke of staging a coup, to overthrow the Vanguard. It all made sense to me, and the truth was terrifying. When this knowledge made its way to the public, the War Cult began to hemorrhage a considerable number of members, not willing to associate with somebody who had, unfortunately, grown mad with knowledge.
Many Guardians had also renounced their allegiance to the War Cult, and to the Monarchy as well. Countless Marks, Cloaks and Bonds had been tossed to the ground or destroyed in disgust, mine included. Not that it seems to matter, as Lakshmi-2 has managed to rally several civilians in her demagogic crusade. To the aforementioned Director, if by some slim chance you do read this, perhaps alone in the ruins of our City, I ask you; was your war against the Vanguard worth becoming a prophet in the name of revenge? Are you proud of becoming a pawn of the Witch Queen, willing or otherwise? If not, may you enjoy your reign in a shadow worse than the Endless Night.
Your former ally,
Mist-32
