Amber POV, Takes place after Chapter 79

It was a beautiful Spring afternoon at 2:30 in Placeville Park, and I breathed in to smell the cool air, the smell of freshly-cut grass. Birds chirped, the fountain trickled a leisurely stream of water, children flew their kites.

I sighed outwards. After a fight with an annoying abomination of nature in the town centre, there was nothing more refreshing than a leisurely stroll in the park with a good buddy from the gym.

A cute buddy from the gym.

I shook my head and looked to my left, smiling absently at her good company; gym bud (I should really ask her name sometime) was rambling on about some inane engineering feat she'd read about in some tech magazine or something.

I was never one for tech. I had no preference besides the more easily breakable, which Mad Spade (that annoying bratty wannabe supervillain who thankfully isn't here to ruin a perfectly good date) was content to supply in Spades (pun intended).

Unlike that weaselly annoying brat, Gym bud was the cutest, most energetic girl I'd ever met. She never gave up at lifting the heaviest of weights, despite her rubbery arms barely being able to lift a basic dumbbell. I sighed contentedly again. Outside of the tiring mundanities of hero life, I could relax and enjoy some good company.

"-and so then they said that it was not really that interesting! Can you believe it? Prototype hoverboards, not cool? I know you'd understand, Amby, but they just don't get it! Waa waa waa who cares what the danish are doing I mean come on! They're my third best friend, after Lackey and you of course, but I swear they just don't get it! The danish hoverboard program is-"

I smiled at her again. Listening to her ramble on about some technical doohickey I don't know two licks about was always the best part of going to the gym. I felt myself going there more for her company than any kind of exercise lately. The soreness seemed easier to ignore when she went off on another rant about the Danish or fangirling about Miss Sunshine's cool laser eyes, Miss Sunshine's cape that froze solid in the winter-

"I'd totally install a portable radiator on it for her if she'd let me"

-Miss Sunshine's new brand of cereal she bought 22 boxes of before she discovered it tasted like mouldy lemons, Miss Sunshine's massive biceps, her golden hair, her majestic smile, her this, her that-

My face flushed as I felt a twinge of jealousy- at herself, no less! -and turned back to my noodly partner.

It was a pity I have to keep my Superhero identity a secret. This girl was head over heels for Miss Sunshine, unaware that Miss Sunshine was going out on a date with her!

I smiled at the girl, staring longingly into her eyes (well, shades) for a moment.

Oh shit, she was looking at me expectantly with the most adorable little smile, giving a striking resemblance to a cute puppy dog that just showed you their favourite toy, tail wagging-

My face flushed again.

"Ah, S-Sorry, I uhhhhhh... I zoned out! What was that last part?" I asked, flashing a dazzling smile I had practiced a million times as Miss Sunshine. This time it felt more... genuine.

Gym bud blinked, as if I spoke a different language, before responding.

"Amber, you silly! I said we're here! C'mon, let's go in, I wanna get one of the salads with all the bits of chicken and avocado in them! They're soooooo good, I hear they're Miss Sunshine's favourite too! It's how I started trying them! They're loaded with protein, you know? Very healthy, but I still really like the taste! Treat-yo-self, y'know? I-"

As she began rambling again, I smiled at her. It's a pity I can't see her eyes beneath the shades. She seemed oblivious to the smouldering gaze I was giving her, but I didn't blame her. If I she liked me and I was going on and on about how I was head over heels for, I dunno, Mad Spade (like that'd ever happen), I would be surprised if I gave a second thought to the look she was giving me either.

I opened the door for her, and we walked in.
