Sorry for the delay! Life happened, and I'm still here, working it very slowly!
To everyone who has read this, you all are literally the best! 3
A sick feeling stirred deep in his gut, nausea washed over him in a wave.
In his mind, the beast howled in pain and his heart raced. He bit back the urge to pant. Something was very wrong.
Smoke filled his senses. A large fire burned somewhere close. The different scents mixed in- linen, food, ritual herbs- it must be the monastery on the other side of the valley. He was thankful he did not smell the flesh of humans or blood mixed in. Sesshoumaru closed his eyes, willing the nausea away.
When he opened his eyes he could see the ash falling like snow, could hear the cries of the dying. Squeezing his eyes shut he breathed out slowly through his mouth.
Opening his eyes again, he could see Jaken and Rin sleeping by Ah-Un. Standing slowly he motioned the dragon to keep guard, a strong pull urging him to investigate.
In the valley, the morning mists had begun to form, a thick fog blanketing the ground and leaving visibility to only several feet. Choosing to walk through the mists rather than fly through the smoke, he made his way down.
He heard growling and the sound of someone hitting something up ahead. Choosing to investigate what may have been the reason for his unsettled feeling, he found Inuyasha. Perched upon a boulder in the middle of a stream, punching a rock for no apparent reason.
"Why are you cursing yourself, little brother? Find out you're weak compared to that rock?"
"Go away, I'm not in the mood to talk to you." He bit back "maybe I'll fight you and take the Tensaiga and resurrect Kagome and the other two "
His head snapped towards Inuyasha. The howling inside his mind grew louder. "As if you could master my Tensaiga"
Pulling his youki around him he shot off in a brilliant green ball towards the burning wreckage. He could feel Inuyasha release a wind scar behind him, but it would have no effect, he was much too far away.
Landing in the field where Kagome lay, the kit fell backwards in his surprise. Tear tracks running down his distraught face.
His eyes were locked on Kagome, her heart beat slowly, softly, yet still beat. The rise and fall of her chest was so slight he had to watch to ensure that's what he saw, yet, her reiki curled lovingly against his own, reassuring him the most of her status.
"I tried! I tried so hard but it didn't work!"
Exhaustion, fear and sadness played across the kits face as he yelled to Sesshoumaru in desperation. He could sense his depleted youki, and the magic of foxfire in the air and over the three still bodies.
He reached down and scooped him up. "You did well, kit" he told him, rubbing his nose along the kits in a comforting gesture. "You did well, she lives, they all do."
Tears that had filled the kits eyes dropped and the kit rubbed back, tucking himself up under Sesshomaru's neck.
"They will all be well, this one must leave now to check on Rin, but I will return later to check on Kagome. It is not safe, so be watchful"
Reluctantly he removed the kit from himself and placed him one the ground. Moving swiftly to Kagome he knelt down and brushed stray hairs from her face.
Leaning forward he pressed his lips gently against hers. His youki pressing onto her, trying to show her reiki how to heal her. He ran his nose along his cheek and he could feel that he was being watched.
Looking left he caught Myoga staring at him. Mouth agape, eyes wide. Raising an eyebrow in challenge was enough to snap the flea back to his task.
Rising up, he flew across the sky. Kagome's scent blocking out the scent of the smoke.
