AN: Hey there! I just thought I would add a bit of warining here about the chapter. I was a bit unsure to add a *certain* suggestive scene in this part. You know... Rated T and all... But Than I realised, sometimes movies rated PG13 show even more, so... well I guess I'll explain at the end. So WARNING: contains suggestive theme... Now that this is out of the way...
Nick had a great day. To his surprise, Jack didn't wait at the discussed place in the morning. It was someone else giving him his earned money. When Nick asked what was up with Jack, he just received a shrug, and the hare told him, "It was some personal thing. At least that's what Jack had told me." So Nick just picked up his payment and was about to go home, while happily whistling. That's when his phone rang with the name 'Buffalo butt'
"Hey, Chief what is…"
"Into my office." The short and straightforward command came, interrupting Nick.
"Can't you just tell me on the phone?"
"Into… My… Office, Wilde." When the chief said things slowly, that sent shivers down everyone's spine. Before Nick could answer, his boss already hung up.
"What now?" Nick growled as he felt his day was already ruined. He slowly walked to the ZPD, willingly catching all the red lights he could, and watched the cars passing by. But after a while, he finally reached the ZPD building and walked inside.
"Hey, Wilde!" Delgato greeted him, being the first mammal to spot him. "Suspension over?"
"Yeah, I wish… Bogo called me in and was really pissed off for some reason."
"Wow. This is some superpower of yours. What did you manage to upset him with, while you weren't even on duty?
"Top secret," He shrugged. "But we can discuss that in a few weeks next to a cold beer."
"Oooh! Undercover job huh?"
"Can't confirm nor deny."
"So it is." The lion laughed. "Alright, I won't ask more things. Try not to get your head bitten off by Bogo."
"Yeah, well… In case I won't come out, call the police and report a murder. Oh yeah right... WE are the police. In that case... I'm screwed, aren't I?"
He walked up the stairs and after knocking on the door, a loud 'Come in' was heard.
"You came late," Bogo said in a neutral tone while reading a case file. "It's been an hour since I called you."
"Yeah, traffic," Nick gave the short answer. "So? Why did I have to come here?"
"What were you thinking yesterday?" Bogo looked at the fox, taking off his glasses.
Yep, he is pissed. Nick thought to himself and tried to stay calm. "I don't know… I think about a lot of things daily."
"Can you explain why you suddenly switched lanes on a highway, to the oncoming one?"
"To win the race? I was behind, needed a plan, switched lanes, and won. Can I go now? I have a burrito waiting at home and it won't eat itself!"
"Do you have the slightest idea how unprofessional that was? Not only did you damage the separating line, but endangered your, and other civilians' lives too!"
"I do dangerous things in every race. Why did you decide to comment on it NOW?"
"That's just over the line, Wilde. You keep doing more and more stupid things. I ignored too many of your little show-offs. It's the best if we call this whole operation off."
"NO, Sir! I'm already making progress. The mammal I raced with yesterday was the Nightdragon LEADER. Look, it's not the wisest idea to call it off now."
"I'm happy you're having fun, but I don't see how that makes the job progress," Bogo muttered under his nose.
"The job progress? Sir… I raced with a big crew LEADER. Not only one of their members, the leader. Tell me how that isn't a progress."
The Buffalo sighed and rubbed his eyes. "It's been 1 month, and we still have no idea where and when the big 12 will take place, or who the sponsor is…"
"Give me 1 more month, and you will know everything." Nick gave the offer. One month seemed reasonable. "Sounds like a fair trade, isn't it?"
"Drive the car back to the garages by the end of the day. Case closed." Bogo leaned back in his chair, signaling that the conversation was over on his end, but Nick didn't leave it that.
"Are you serious right now? Alright... Give me two days or I resign… That's your specialty isn't it?"
Knowing really well what Nick referred to, Bogo quickly answered "The situation with Miss Hopps was completely different. It's…"
"No, it wasn't different at all. It was based on some speciest assumption."
"She was a rookie, that's why…"
"NO! We both know that's not true. She was a rabbit and that's why you didn't want her to be at the police. And do you know why I'm good with undercover jobs?" Nick gave the rhetorical question. "Because when they see a fox it's not their first thought that 'Oh he might be a cop.'"
"That wasn't…."
"Tell me if it didn't pass your mind while you assigned me to the first undercover job." As Bogo didn't say anything, Nick continued. "Yeah. That's what I thought. But you know what? It does work out, so can you at least let me finish this?"
After a bit of silence, Bogo finally spoke. "I'll give you 5 days… No more. When that's over I won't care how big of a name you just defeated. If you still won't have mentionable information about the big race, I'll want to see that car back at the garages by 6 am! No later!"
"Understood! You won't regret this." Nick gave a two-finger salute and was already on his way out of his boss's office. He could still hear Bogo's muffled answer.
"I already regret this..."
5 days… Well, not exactly what I expected, but beggars can't be choosers, huh? Nick thought to himself. Let's try to make the best out of this. Plus who knows? I might succeed.
As he left the ZPD, he immediately made a call with his incognito phone. There was no time he can waste. He needs races, and quick. "Hey, Stripes! Ahh… You said the Quickshifters are up for a race too, right?"
"Heh. You like to do things the fast way huh? Quickshifters might appreciate that. You know what? Get ready for a drag race. I'll set you up with someone."
"Wait... Drag race? That's stupid. It's not even about your skills, more about your car."
"Do you want to go against a Quickshifter or not?"
"Yes, I do. But I'll keep my opinion. If I meet their leader, my first comment will be 'Drag race is stupid'"
"Okay," Jack could be heard chuckling. "Today evening sounds good?"
"Perfect."
"It is set then. I can make room for you around 11 Pm or 1 Am, depending on how I can set things up. This should be a cop-free race. Okay, a bit of explaining. Drag races are usually best of 5's and take less than 7-8 minutes. In case cops do show up, we have to postpone the rest of the parts."
"Noted." Nick nodded "One more thing. What was that personal thing you had to take care of?"
"Do you not know the meaning of 'Personal'? I know you love to poke your nose at everyone's business, but come on! Curiosity killed the cat!"
"But satisfaction brought it back!" Nick finished the saying. "You know I'm gonna figure it out!"
"Have fun trying! See you at the race."
"Wanna bet, I'll find it out, by the end of the day? 50 bucks say I'll do!"
"Goodbye!" With that, the call ended.
"I'm gonna figure it out!" Nick said with a grin and kept on walking back home.
As Jack ended the call, he yawned and sat up from bed. He stretched his arms and looked at the clock. He didn't sleep a lot last night, but that was the best sleep he had in years.
"Was it Big Mouth?" A vixen asked next to him.
"Yeah," Jack nodded. "He already wants to race with the Quickshifters. He is one ambitious fox, I gotta admit. And I like his enthusiasm."
"So…" She sat up too. "It looks like you finally found what you were looking for."
"I might have." He smiled while looking into her blue eyes. "Oh, you meant a crewmate? Yeah, that one too." He added and leaned in for a kiss. "You know… the invitation still stands for you too."
As he said that Mia's smile faded, and looked away. "Look. I'd like to. I really do. But I don't want to be an outlaw. I want a real job, a real life, and not constantly looking behind my back looking for cops. I'm really sorry."
The rabbit sighed, and gave a friendly smile "I respect your choice."
"I just… Keep wondering what my parents would say to this, you know... Would they be supportive? Maybe disappointed? Ashamed? They always wanted me to be a 'law abiding' citizen if they saw what I was doing now… I think they would be ashamed." She sighed "And I'm being exactly something they wanted me to avoid… I'm a criminal."
"No you aren't a criminal, that's a bit strong word. Not like you killed someone. And to be honest… I think if they did see you now, they would be proud. You mentioned, your father was a mechanic, right? Well, I haven't met him but you are probably just as great as he was."
"Heh yeah, well… Learned from him a lot..."
"Well, in that case, he must have been a great dad."
"For the most of the time he was... It's… complicated." Mia shook her head and frowned a little while staring in front of herself.
Furrowing his eyebrows, Jack tried to make eye contact again "Did he do something?"
"He didn't beat me or anything like that if that's what you were thinking about. No. It's just… A long story."
"I've got time." Jack shrugged. "Every single payout is being taken care of. All I have now is time! But if you don't want to talk about it, that's alright too. I understand."
"No, I… Well, if there is someone I could trust with this that's definitely you so..." She tried to gather her thoughts. "As you know, my dad used to own a repair shop. After school, I always visited him first, and we went home together after 8 pm. I did my homework there, learned what I had to. Dad never let me do anything before I finished those.
After I was done with everything, I was finally able to sit down next to him. We talked about a lot of things, but that wasn't the main reason I sat next to him. I loved watching him work. He was so enthusiastic about everything. He always explained whatever he was doing in the smallest details. He thought he was boring me with these, but I liked when he was talking about his work…
The way he searched for every single hidden problem the car might have… Just like a detective looking for clues. He never gave half work out of his paws. Sometimes he missed a deadline, but the car was fixed with quality work. I first helped with the smaller things, like holding the flashlight for him or bringing a wrench, but later I helped in with harder things too. I liked being next to him." As the harder parts came, she gave a sigh and closed her eyes
"As I said, It's alright if you don't want to talk..."
"No-no, It's okay… I feel like I need to talk about it to someone. I've held it back for so long and never really talked about this to anyone.
So... We were happy… and then everything went to hell. I still remember everything about that day. We were working on a 1952 Beatley that was originally brought because of a rattling sound after ignition, and dad just kept on finding new problems on the car. When his phone rang, he wiped his paws first, and picked up the phone, expecting another client, but no. It was the police. I saw his expression changing slowly. His optimistic smile faded into shock and terror….
Mom had an accident. It was a drunk driver on the lane they shouldn't have been on. He survived, with several serious injuries, … mom didn't" She stopped for a few seconds, leaving her time to think what she will say next. "At first dad tried to pull himself together, but I saw he wasn't right. Well, I wasn't right either, but we tried to keep going. Things started going downhill when he started drinking alcohol. And lots of it.
I kept on running the business next to school, at least I tried my best. Since I wasn't old enough, whenever a new customer came, their first question was: Where is your father? Which I answered: He had some things to attend to I'm just here to take the car. He will be here in a few hours. Of course, he didn't come once. I had to fix everything on any car.
I would have accepted it, if I didn't see dad lying on the floor, sometimes in his own vomit whenever I returned home. I asked him to stop drinking once, but he just phlegmatically said: 'Don't tell me what to do, bitch'... It was the first and the last time he called me a 'Bitch', I'm not even sure if he was sober when he said it. He most likely doesn't even remember this but… I do... I had enough. I spent every night with one of my friends because I didn't want to go home, and whenever I did go home he was either drunk or hungover.
It was a relief when I turned 18 and I was allowed to go away from the family house as far as I wanted to. I hated him so… much…" She shook her head with tears appearing in the corner of her eyes. "And I felt guilty about it for a long time. He was going through a tough time, I shouldn't have been so hard on him… But I went through a hard time too, he just didn't care!
Anyway. Without me, the workshop was abandoned, and in the end, it was sold to some douchebag, who is probably using it as a storage room or whatever. Dad called me two times… But only for some money. At first, I gave him. I just started with 'legal' racing, and even though I didn't earn a lot at the start, he was my dad after all. But the second time, I already knew why he needed the money. The family savings were gone to the last cent. That was the last drop in the glass. I... I shouted him off, how bad of a parent he was, and hung the phone up on him, immediately blocking that number.
I didn't even give him a chance to talk to me again. I don't know what has happened to him since then. He might be... dead, or… drunk, or who knows he might have changed but… Even if that's true, I don't know if I could forgive him. I tried. I really did. But I just couldn't. So basically, I lost both of my parents that day."
"I'm so sorry. I didn't know all this." Jack said while he had his paw on Mia's shoulder.
"It's fine. I'm a big girl now!" She chuckled and forced a smile on her face. "Well. I… I think I should go now. You said drag race, so I will have a bit of modifying work to do. You wouldn't want your crewmate to be a loser, would you?" She got out of the bed, revealing her bare red fur, and collected her clothes
"You're right. I don't." He said, looking dazed at the vixen
Spotting the rabbit's glare, she laughed. "What?"
"You look beautiful."
After a giggle and a playful tail swish, she said "Well, and aren't you handsome, my secret agent?"
"Jack Savage at your service!"
Heh yeah... so basically the whole point of this was to show a bit of backstory for Mia. I kinda wanted to make a more intimate atmosphere where she would probably talk about things. At first I wanted to make a whole chapter called 'Mia's story' but I wasn't sure if people would like it. Maybe after I finfish the main storyline, I'll write a backstory for both Mia and Jack, but not now.
