CHAPTER TEN - The Scorching Sun

"I belong in the maze." Sully said.

Clyde looked at Lincoln.

Lincoln kept his stance, not wanting to provoke anything.

"Just...just put down the gun Sully. Please." Lincoln said.

Sully's hand began shaking as the tears came out.

"We all do." Sully said.

Sully began to pull the trigger.

Lynn was ready to throw her spear.

Instead a spear was thrown at Sully by Luna.

Sully pulled the trigger as the spear was heading towards him.

"SULLY, DO-" Lincoln was pushed by Clyde out of the way of the bullet.

The shot of the gun rang throughout the lab.

The spear struck Sully in his right eye.

Everyone was in shock.

Sully stood still, trying to gasp for air.

Lincoln got up.

Luna backed away in shock. She had just threw a spear into Sully's eye.

Sully dropped to his knees.

Blood seeped down from Sully's eye.

Sully began to breathe loudly from the pain.

Sully dropped the gun and fell sideways to the floor, the spear still in his eye.

With one last breath, he moved his hand slightly.

Then, he stopped moving.

Everyone was at a loss for words.

"Did...that j-just happen?" Luke asked.

Sam looked at Luna.

"Holy shit, Luna." Sam said quietly.

Luna stared at Sully's lifeless body in shock.

Lori looked at Lincoln.

"Are you okay, Lincoln?" Lori asked.

Lincoln, still looking at Sully's body, answered.

"Yeah." Lincoln said.

Lincoln then turned his head towards Clyde.

"Thanks, Clyde." Lincoln said.

Clyde stood there, but he didn't reply.

Lincoln was confused.

"You okay, Clyde?" Lincoln asked.

Clyde looked at Lincoln slowly.

"Lincoln..." Clyde said.

Lincoln's eyes widened as he looked down at Clyde's stomach.

Blood was seeping out from his stomach.

"Clyde?" Lincoln asked worryingly.

Clyde then fell to the floor.

The bullet had struck Clyde in the stomach.

Everyone looked over and quickly surrounded Clyde.

Clyde wheezed in pain.

"Clyde!" Lincoln shouted.

The blood from Clyde's stomach gushed out even more.

"Shit! Anyone got anything?" Luke asked.

Everyone stood silent.

Francisco was the only one with medical supplies on him, but the grievers got to him.

Lincoln started to put his hands on the wound, trying to stop the blood from seeping out.

Clyde began to close his eyes.

"Come on! Stay with me!" Lincoln shouted.

Clyde opened his eyes and stared at Lincoln.

Aazay leaned down next to Clyde.

Aazay quickly took out a canteen.

He began to give Clyde a drink of water.

Clyde slowly gulped down the water.

No one knew what to do.

They just looked down at Clyde, shocked.

Clyde breathed loudly.

"Lincoln...just...go..." Clyde said slowly.

Lincoln's eyes widened.

"What?! No! We're all getting out of here!" Lincoln said.

Clyde blinked slowly.

"Please..." Clyde said slowly.

Tears began to form in Lincoln's eye.

"We made it! I can't just leave without you!" Lincoln yelled.

Lori began to tear up.

Clyde smiled.

"Thanks...for getting us out..." Clyde said.

Lincoln shook his head in disbelief.

"Clyde! Stay with me!" Lincoln said.

Clyde stared up into the ceiling. He took one last breath.

Lincoln removed his hands from the wound.

"Clyde! Please! Stay with me!" Lincoln yelled.

Sam began to tear up.

Clyde had stopped breathing, his eyes still open.

"Shit..." Aazay whispered to himself before closing his eyes.

"Clyde! Wake up! Come on! We're leaving this place! Together!" Lincoln yelled.

Lincoln began cry into Clyde's chest.

Suddenly, a group of adults began to run inside the hallway from outside.

Everyone still alive but Lincoln looked over at the figures.

The figures carried guns and they were running over towards the group.

Lincoln still had his focus on Clyde's lifeless body.

The figures wore gear and armor.

The soldiers approached the group of teens.

"COME ON! GET OUTSIDE!" A soldier yelled.

The soldiers began to push and evacuate the group into the hallway.

Lincoln looked behind him and noticed the soldiers.

Two soldiers approached Lincoln.

One soldier looked down at him.

"Come on." The soldier said.

Lincoln looked down at Clyde.

Lincoln didn't want to believe that he was dead. But he knew the truth.

Lincoln wiped his tears and gave Clyde another look before turning around and walking to the hallway.

The soldiers began to rush the group outside.

The two soldiers in the back urged Lincoln to move faster.

Lincoln looked back at the lab one more time.

He saw Clyde's body on the floor and Sully's body on the floor.

Lincoln turned his head around towards the bright light ahead.

The light became brighter and brighter.

Lincoln then saw sand.

Lots of sand.

Lincoln looked and saw sand everywhere as the sun shined down.

The scorching sun was a refresher to everyone stuck in that lab.

Lincoln looked ahead and saw a bus.

The group began to run towards the bus.

Lincoln began to sprint walk towards the bus.

The group began to enter the bus, one by one.

Lincoln was the last to enter the bus.

Everyone sat down in a hurry.

The bus had plenty of windows.

The driver was also a soldier.

Everyone couldn't believe it. They had escaped.

Lincoln sat down, and began wiping his tears.

There was a large armored military van behind them.

The soldiers began to enter inside the van.

The group had no idea who saved them, but they were thankful regardless.

Suddenly, the driver in the vehicle behind began to honk the horn, signaling the go-ahead.

The bus started to move forward.

Lincoln looked out the window and back towards the entrance to the lab.

He was filled with dread as the bus got farther away from the lab.

Lincoln looked back and tried his best not to think of it.

Lincoln only knew Clyde for less than a week, but there was something about him that made Lincoln care more for him.

Everyone was filled with relief and adrenaline, they never questioned who saved them and where they were going.

Aazay was the first to ask.

"Hey! Driver!" Aazay shouted.

The driver replied.

"What?"

"You mind telling where you're taking us?" Aazay asked.

The driver stayed quiet for a moment before responding.

"A place where you'll all be safe." The driver responded.

Everyone looked at each other.

"What kind of place?" Luke asked.

The driver once again stayed quiet for a moment.

"A stadium. Other kids we saved before are being cared for there. You're lucky we found you before those monsters did." The driver responded.

Everyone looked at each other once again.

The bus continued down the road, with vacant skyscrapers and buildings surrounding it.

The armored van followed close behind.

As the bus continued, Lincoln was the only one who had fell asleep instantly, not hearing anything about what the driver was saying next.

After hearing the information, Aazay looked at the driver once more and asked one more question.

"Who are you people?" Aazay asked.

This time, the driver answered straight away.

"The Owl's Army." The driver responded.

What a strange name...

"Welcome to The Scorch!" The driver shouted.

The bus continued. As the sun of the new world glared off the bus, the only way of knowing what was next was by finding out themselves.
