Happy birthday, flowerkitty26. I hope you enjoy this! Not my best, but I tried anyway. :) Also, fun fact, I picked the wand wood because that was what Pottermore originally gave me and I did think it fitted Luna.

Luna Lovegood looked around her in wonder, feeling the magic hum throughout the shop.

Finally, she was going to Hogwarts. Finally, she could learn about magic, maybe could discover other people just like her. Ginny Weasley was very nice to her, but it still wasn't the same as having someone who was like her.

And the first step towards this was getting a wand.

"Luna Lovegood, is it?" Ollivander, his eyes just the same colour as hers, walked out of the shadows, making her jump.

"Yes, sir."

"Here for a wand, are you?" He didn't wait for a reply, instead starting a tape measure going to measure her. "Which hand?"

"Left." While watching him hurry over and fetch down two wand boxes, Luna idly wondered whether her father would go hunting again during school time, or wait for the holidays. The best season for the Crumple-Horned Snorkack was definitely during school, but then she couldn't be there. He would decide, though; he always knew what was best.

"Try this one—dragon heartstring, ten inches, willow, rigid."

It felt distinctly wrong in her hand, and he snatched it from her fingers without another moment.

"Unicorn hair, twelve inches, oak, swishy."

This one did not feel so wrong, but it was whipped from her hand after barely a second.

Three more wands went by until Ollivander said triumphantly, "How about this one?"

And put her wand in her hand.

Luna knew it was hers instantly. There was a warmth, a high, sweet sound at the edge of her hearing, and a fountain of sparks of all colours scattering across the floor. She tightened her grip on it and the sparks turned silver, a veritable rain of light that dazzled and delighted her.

"Unicorn hair and apple wood, twelve inches, quite flexible."

She was glad she had read up on wands previously. It added something special to this already special moment, to understand something of what he was saying. One feature of apple wood, she remembered with a small thrill of delight, was its difficulty to turn to the Dark Arts, its allegiance only to those with high aims and ideals. She had hoped for an applewood wand. And now, surely, she would find friends at Hogwarts.

She couldn't wait.

Sometimes Luna was very glad she was an optimist. Nobody—nobody—had approached her on the train, except one curious boy, who'd abruptly left when she mentioned the Nargles that were crowding him. She supposed it wasn't surprising, just a bit sad.

Never mind. Once she was Sorted, her housemates were sure to become her friends. Or at least, some of them. Even one would do. Perhaps Ginny Weasley would be her friend at Hogwarts as well as otherwise, after all. She hadn't come and searched Luna out, though.

Never mind, she repeated to herself. There was always another chance. And when she got into Ravenclaw, despite the fact that nobody clapped, she knew she'd found her spot, her home for the next seven years.

Someday, it would feel like a home.

I intended this to be longer than it was. But I'd completed most of it and left it for a while, and only today realised 'oh yeah, that's the day' and discovered that my head was full of my original work. So I quickly finished it off (it was written up to 'even one would do') in a way that would be okay, and posted it.

I had more ideas for it; perhaps sometime I will expand this, because it could be interesting.

Also, as far as NaNoWriMo goes: very busy with it, loving it, and quite possibly won't touch fanfiction until next year. Although I have a goal to cross the 100,000 mark total archived on FF, before the end of the year, and I've still got - what, 10k to go? So that may or may not happen.

Once I finish my draft for this original work, while it's resting, I may or may not be quite active on FF (depends on when I get back feedback on a previous story and work with it). I want to finish what I have going for a while. Your highest chance of influencing me comes from reviewing constructively.

Anyway, I shall shut up. Please review!
