Star Pupil

Chapter 18

Due to Katelyn's decreasing mental state, she was released after having a surgery to fix her shoulders and collarbone. She simply wanted to go home. She was still adamant about not having the surgery to fix her face. Mike and Christine weren't thrilled with it, but they supported their daughter. Christine was exhausted and not feeling well and Mike could tell something was really bothering her. The day they brought Katelyn home, after she fell asleep in her bedroom; Mike found Christine in their bedroom, staring into space.

"Christine; aren't you going to rest? Don't worry about the twins. Katie is asleep and Hannah said she would help with dinner." Mike asked as he knelt in front of her.

"I should." Christine admitted. Her eyes were glowing with tears and her chin was quavering.

"What's wrong? We have her home now. She can really start healing." Mike said. He sat down next to her and wrapped his arms around her. Christine put her head on his chest and let the tears soak into his shirt. Finally she looked up at him.

"Its not the stomach flu or nerves. While Katie was sleeping yesterday, I went to the E.R. to get checked out…" Christine started.

"Christine, what is it? Whatever it is, we will get through it. Nothing is so bad that we cannot get through." Mike said, dreading whatever she said next.

"Its…not bad, necessarily. Its…a baby. I'm five weeks along. That night after our dinner…I thought I was too old and that there was no way I could get pregnant so easily. I know its really bad timing and because of the new laws, I can't get rid of it." Christine said.

"I would never ask that. A baby is…its a lot to take in but you're right. Its not a bad thing." Mike said.

"Sorry. Throw back to Brad." Christine admitted.

"Did he make you get an abortion?" Mike asked.

"No, but he always told me if I did get pregnant, I would have to get one and I know there is…kind of a black market for it. I was afraid you would do the same thing." Christine explained.

"Well, this baby…he or she has been created in love and it will only ever know love. Is everything okay?" Mike asked.

"Yes. The baby is developing well. Of course, it was too early for an ultrasound but the doctor was appeased and I was given an appointment was a doctor who specializes in what they called a geriatric pregnancy." Christine explained with a smile.

"Geriatric? I feel really old!" Mike said with a laugh.

"Its any pregnancy that occurs after the mother is thirty-five. And I'm…definitely not thirty-five any longer. Nearly a decade older." Christine clarified for him with a laugh.

"It will all be alright." Mike said. He wrapped his arms back around her and gave her a kiss on the top of the head.

"Mike; I do want to wait to tell the kids, specifically Katie. She has too much going on and she needs to do some healing. Maybe once I'm out of the first trimester?" Christine suggested. Mike had always gotten thoroughly excited about her pregnancies and she didn't want it announced too soon.

"That is going to be hard but its probably a good idea." Mike said. They both stood up and Mike gave Christine a long kiss on the lips.

"Have you talked to Katie about the Academy?" Christine asked.

"No. Wanted her to be fully rested so she'd remember that I was okay with it. I'm honestly extremely proud of her. She's made a stand and while it might be hard to look at the scars, I truly believe she is going to find a way through all this. She, like her mom, is one tough cookie." Mike said.

"And like her dad, she is strong." Christine agreed.

"I know this sounds funny, and I'm sure Aaron will want a baby brother so he and I aren't so outnumbered, but I really would not mind another baby girl." Mike commented.

"I wouldn't mind either. Just not twins again. That was tough." Christine remarked.

"We are going to be okay. Katie is going to be okay. Everything will be amazing." Mike said.

"I think you are right. Now, I am going to take your suggestion and sleep." Christine told him.

"Good. And don't worry about the kids. I got them." Mike said.

"I love you." Christine said simply.

"I love you too." Mike told her before kissing her on the lips again and then throwing her pajamas towards her. He winked at her and then walked out of the bedroom. It put Christine's mind at ease, because she had honestly been scared of Mike's reaction and she had hope he was right. Katelyn had some hard things to go through, but she was strong.
