Chapter 20-1 month later
Once Katelyn recovered enough, her family hosted a huge party with all of her requested foods. Christine had wanted to do it before she got too far along and it made sense. A lot of Mike's friends were there, along with Deputy Maxwell. He had become a feature around the house and he and Katelyn were officially dating, although they were taking things very slowly. Mike and Christine both adored him and Katelyn enjoyed getting to be somewhat normal.
Mike and Christine did tell the kids about the baby, and everyone was thrilled. Mike made a point to spend time with all four of the older kids so when the new baby arrived, they didn't feel so neglected. He spoiled Christine and was very willing to do anything she asked. All in all, they were recovering. Katelyn had been afraid that she would have to face Brad in a courtroom, but he killed himself in jail, and Trey took a plea bargain, allowing her to just move on with her life.
Six Months Later
Mike carefully carried the car seat with the sleeping baby girl in it, all while helping Christine up the porch steps. Christine had given birth to Skylar Christine the day before and she was absolute perfection. Skylar completed their family. As soon as they walked in, Mike realized the rest of his family was in the backyard swimming, so he helped Christine upstairs and into their bedroom. He settled her in the bed with Skylar after she changed into a comfortable nightgown. Before going to get his family, Mike sat down next to Christine to admire Skylar.
"She's such a good baby." Mike remarked. He was completely entranced by his new daughter.
"She reminds me a lot of Katelyn as a baby." Christine said.
"Well, hopefully she is strong like Katelyn." Mike replied.
"And hopefully, she never has a reason to find that strength. Hopefully, she has a nice, peaceful life." Christine commented.
"True." Mike agreed. He leaned over and kissed the top of Skylar's head before giving Christine a long kiss.
"I think we are all gonna be just fine. Katelyn is doing better every day. She is excelling in nursing school and she and Chris are taking their time. Hannah is loving high school. Aaron and Abby have both developed good relationships with you and Skylar is just perfect. Could we ask for anything else?" Christine asked.
"Nope. As long as they all stay healthy, we are good! I love you." Mike said.
"Love you more." Christine said.
"I'd better get the kids out of the pool. You just relax up here. Dinner and everything is taken care of." Mike instructed.
"Thanks. Skylar and I are just going to rest." Christine told him.
"Good." Mike said. He gave her another kiss before standing up. At the bedroom door, he looked back at her and smiled, before heading down to spend some time with the older kids. Christine was right. Things were perfect and Mike hoped it remained that way. There was no reason it shouldn't.
