Kaneki stared at Hide's head while he finished washing the dishes. He'd been out in the sun and looked even more like a sunflower than usual.

As he dried his hands he pondered how much he loved his hair. Well actually, he loved everything about Hide, but he'd always thought it was really cool.

Kaneki had asked him about why he never got dress-coded once when they were younger.

"Well that's easy, it's not dyed. My mom's American."

"But it's brown at the roots!"

"Ma says it's called sun bleaching. The longer I'm out in the sun the blonder it gets."

When he went home that day he proceeded to read everything he could get his hands on about it.

Without thinking Kaneki casually walked forward and plopped his face in Hide's soft fluffy hair. His ghoul senses meant he was completely immersed in the smell of citrusy shampoo and Hide's scent.

Hide's laughter was warm and jingled like wind chimes. For a moment it felt like summer despite it only being early spring.

"Hey 'neki, whatcha doing up there?"

Kaneki's face flushed red. God he'd done that without thinking.

"Come here." Hide said, "tackling" the ghoul onto the couch.

Tackle being in quotes because Kaneki was in fact much stronger than him and just loved him enough to bend to his whims.

God, he was so glad to have this back. He'd never make the mistake of leaving this, of leaving Hide again, he thought to himself with a soft, affectionate smile. Hide pressed a gentle kiss to his lips and Kaneki relished in it. He let himself melt in the way his arms felt wrapped around his waist.

He was the stronger one here but he felt safer in Hide's arms than anywhere in the world.

Hide, the light that kept his life from being a tragedy, his sun.
