Kate sat on the edge of the bed and took Jenny's hand in hers and smiled.
"So, I will be here when you wake up" Kate told her.
"I know you will be. You won't leave the hospital" she said with a small smile and Kate nodded.
"Well if something goes wrong I rather be here then at home" this time Kate looked up, her smile long gone.
"Sweetie nothing is going to go wrong. Dr Morgan has done this a thousand times. Plus you and Ducky have assured me he is the best" she squeezed Kates hand and smiled. Kate nodded, still no smile though.
"Tell me something, will you still love me when they shave my half head?" at this Kate finally laughed and nodded.
"You could be bald and I would still love you" she leaned in and kissed her softly. Jenny let go and wrapped her arms around her wife, trying to pull her closer. Kate pulled back and rested her forehead against the red heads.
"If you see a bright white light, don't you dare go towards it. You come back to me, okay?" they both couldn't help but laugh at her words, but Jenny still nodded.
"I promise" she said softly before leaning in and kissing her again. They pulled away when they heard a soft knock on her room door.
"Sorry, I'm interrupting" came the familiar voice. Kate turned and was a little shocked to see Ducky standing there, a beautiful orchard in his hands.
"I called and asked if he could come and sit with you. Just like you are here for me, you need someone to be here for you" Jenny explained, hoping Kate wouldn't be upset.
"Thank you" she said to both of them. Ducky walked over to the bed with a warm smile.
"I thought I would bring you something to brighten up the room" he indicated the orchard, knowing they were Jenny's favourite, and put it on the stand next to her bed.
"It's beautiful, thank you Ducky" she smiled as she looked at it. It was like looking at it made her realise exactly where she was and she started to feel nervous. She took a deep breath to try and calm herself, making Kate squeeze her hands.
"You are going to be fine" Kate said, trying to convince them both.
"Alright, Mrs Shepard. I am here to take you to pre-op. Sadly you will have to say goodbye to everyone here" the wardsman said looking up from his clip board with a small smile. Kate nodded, leaned in and kissed her one more time.
"I love you" she whispered against her lips.
"Love you too" Jenny replied, not yet ready to let her go. Kate got up off the bed and watched as another wardsman came in to help move the bed out.
"Sorry, can you tell me how long the surgery will be?" Kate asked quickly. The wardsman stopped and looked at his schedule.
"I can't be certain, but these things usually take a few hours. And trust me, the longer it takes the better. It mean's the doctor is taking their time and making sure they do everything right. I will get someone to come and update you when they can" with a small smile and a nod he left, pushing her wife along with him. Ducky walked over and put a soft hand on her shoulder.
"I think we could both use a coffee" Ducky said, Kate just nodded and followed him out of her room and to the cafeteria.
Kate was sitting in the waiting room, her elbows resting on her knees and her head in her hands. It had only been two hours but to her it felt more like twenty.
"I know you don't feel like eating, but I got you a sandwich and a bottle of water" Ducky said putting both items down on the table next to where she was sitting.
At his words, Kate's head shot up and she gave him a small smile.
"Thank you Ducky. But I really don't think I can" Ducky nodded and took the seat next to her. They sat in silence for a moment before Kate sat back with a sigh and looked at the clock again.
"I thought they would have an update already. I didn't think it would take this long just to find out if she is okay" Ducky could tell she was worried, and anyone else in her position would be.
"These things do take time. Perhaps he just wants to get further into the procedure before they give you an update. If anything was wrong you would know by now" he tried to reassure her, but it was like whatever he said it didn't help.
Kate rested her head against the wall and closed her eyes, tears slowly rolling down her face.
"I can't lose her Ducky. I know it sounds so cliché, but she is my everything" Ducky reached over and took her hand and gave it a tight squeeze.
"Just like you are hers. Jenny is tough, she won't give up so easily" he said softly. With another squeeze to her hand, he got up and left the room to make a call.
Kate wasn't sure how much time had passed, as she had given up on looking at the clock and thought it would pass quicker if she just kept her eyes closed.
"Kate" it was a voice she was certainly not expecting. She opened her eyes and saw him standing there, concern writing all over his face. She didn't know what caused it, she just knew she couldn't control it.
"Gibbs" she said softly as she stood and wrapped her arms around him, her head resting on his chest and finally letting the tears she had been holding back for the past six weeks out. Gibbs wrapped his arms around her and kissed her head.
It hadn't taken much to get him there. Ducky had called and told him Jenny was in the hospital and Kate was not coping. Of course Gibbs and the team left straight away to be by their team mate and friends side.
After a few minutes, Kate pulled back and finally really looked at him. He had only seen that look on his face a few times and she gave him a small smile as she wiped the tears away.
"I'm okay. Scared, but okay" she turned to see Ziva, McGee and Tony all standing around waiting to find out what exactly was going on.
"It's cancer. Well a brain tumour. The doctor seems pretty hopefully he can get it all, but it will still be a fairly long recovery" she explained. She watched their faces change as what she was telling them sunk in.
"And you didn't tell anyone?" Tony asked, at first he sounded annoyed that they had been left in the dark, but when she looked at him she could tell it was more the fact that they had both been going through this alone.
"We thought it best that no one at NCIS knew. The last thing we needed was someone to question her ability to run a Government Agency" she explained, knowing they would understand.
Without saying anything, Ziva walked over and gave her a big hug.
"She has been through much worse and has survived. I'm sure she will be okay" the Israeli said softly, causing Kate to hug her tighter. It helped hearing other people tell her Jenny would be okay. Eventually she would start to believe it herself.
"Where is she?" came an urgent voice. They all turned toward the doorway to see Abby running in. Ziva quickly stepped away so Abby could comfort her friend. Kate wrapped her arms around the goth and they just held each other.
When Abby pulled back and she looked at Kate and gave her a small smile.
"You don't have to do this alone anymore" she said, and Kate couldn't hold it in anymore. She started crying again and hugged her again. It was certainly going to be a long day for them all.
Gibbs stood at the window staring at the rain, his sixth coffee in his hand. It had been hours since Jenny had come out of surgery and she still hadn't woken up. It had taken himself, Ducky and Abby to convince Kate to go home, have a shower and grab a fresh change of clothes.
Out of the corner of his eye, he saw movement from the bed. He turned to see Jenny starting to wake up. He went over to the side of the bed, putting his coffee cup down on the table behind him.
"Jen?" he asked softly, reaching out to rest his hand on her forehead as he watched her eyes trying to open.
Jenny mumbled and turned her head to the sound of the voice next to her. She opened her eyes and tried to speak.
"Hey, you're okay" he said softly, a smile spreading across his face. They had been waiting for this moment.
"Kate?" she said in a soft, raspy voice. Gibbs smiled and nodded as he stroked her forehead.
"She will be back soon" he told her. She nodded and closed her eyes, the pain medication taking over again. Gibbs pulled up one of the spare chairs and sat down, holding Jenny's hand as she slept, hoping Kate would walking at any moment.
Gibbs watched his friend and former partner sleep, thoughts running through his head. He heard the door open and saw Kate walk in with a backpack, her hair still damp from her shower.
"Hey, she woke up not that long ago. Was asking for you" Gibbs told her and Kate rushed over to the bed and took her wife's hand.
"Jenny, sweetie it's me" she said trying to coax her awake again. She squeezed her hand and gently caressed her face with the other.
"Just let me see those beautiful eyes and I will let you keep sleeping. Wake up so I know you are okay" she pleaded. It took a few minutes but Jenny's eyes slowly fluttered open. Green glassy eyes finding hazel, causing a small smile to form on her face.
"Kate" she said softly. At this Kate was so overwhelmed the tears started again and she squeezed her hand tighter.
"I'm right here honey. I'm not going anywhere" she leaned in and kissed her lips softly.
"You smell nice" Jenny said, before her eyes closed again and she was asleep. Kate laughed softly as she pulled up the other chair so she could sit close to the bed, her hand still holding Jenny's. Gibbs watched them with a small smile. Jenny had loved him years ago, and at one point he thought he loved her too. But it was certainly not like the love he was seeing now.
"You two were planning on having a kid?" he asked, filling the somewhat silent room. Kate looked over at him a little taken aback by his question.
"We were looking into it, yes. But now with this surgery and her treatment afterwards, the money we would have used is going to this instead" she explained, then looked back at her sleeping wife. Gibbs nodded, knowing hospital stays were not cheap, even with insurance.
"Are you okay with that?" he asked. He didn't really realise how it sounded.
"Am I okay with saving my wife's life over having a child? Of course I am. I would make the same decision if I was giving the chance to choose again. A life with a child, but without her in it is just not a life I want to live" she looked at him, she could tell he was just asking but it still annoyed her that he may have even thought she would choose a baby over Jenny.
"Who knows, maybe we will get a dog instead" she said to lighten the mood between them. Turning her attention back to her wife, she knew they wouldn't have time to look after a pet. Right now, their time would be spent together. Enjoying every minute of every day that they had together, because you just don't know when it will be your last.
Gibbs was standing looking out the window once again, this time no coffee in hand and the rain had started to ease. Movement caught his eye and he turned to look at the bed where Jenny was looking at him with a soft smile. Gibbs walked over and patted her hand.
"Hi" she said in a soft voice.
"Hey" he replied with a soft chuckle. Jenny looked down and saw Kate leaning on her bed asleep. Her hand in her own.
"I think this is the longest she has slept since you went in for surgery" he told her softly. Jenny rolled her head back to look at Gibbs.
"What time is it?" she asked after clearing her throat.
"You went in for surgery yesterday at 10am, it is now just after 2pm" Gibbs explained. Jenny nodded as she realised she had been unconscious for a lot longer then expected.
"Thank you for looking after her Jethro" her eyes fell back on her sleeping wife. She wanted to reach out and touch her, but after what Gibbs had said, she also wanted her to sleep.
"We were more then happy too" Gibbs said with a small smile. Jenny looked at him a little confused.
"The whole team have been here" he indicated to her bedside where there was an array of flowers and cards.
"Those are from DiNozzo, next was Palmer and then Ziva. Those one's" he indicated to the vase of black roses.
"From Abby" Jenny said with a small laugh and Gibbs nodded with a smile.
"I will go tell the doctor you are awake" he said softly before leaving. Jenny once again looked at Kate, even though she wanted her to sleep, she wanted to see those beautiful eyes and smile more.
Gently, she squeezed her fingers in her wife's hand, getting an immediate response. Kate sat straight up, her eyes wide and staring at the woman in front of her.
"Jen? Oh my god you're awake. Oh honey" she got up and hugged her wife tight. Jenny wrapped one arm around her and sighed happily as she enjoyed the warmth of the younger woman's body.
"I'm awake" Jenny repeated.
"I should go get the doctor. They will probably want to-" she started to move away from the bed, but Jenny grabbed her arm to stop her.
"Jethro has already gone to find him. Sit back down and relax" she said softly. She smiled when Kate stopped and turned to look at her. Jenny used what little strength she had to move herself over just a little bit in the bed.
"Can I help you get comfortable?" Kate asked, not really knowing what to do. Jenny shook her head and patted the now empty space next to her.
"Join me" she said. Kate smiled and shook her head.
"I can't do that. You need" she started to object.
"I need my wife to join me in this bed" she urged with an innocent, but tired smile. With a sigh, Kate kicked off her shoes and carefully joined the redhead in the bed, being mindful of all the IV's and wires connected to her. She was soon settled into her side, her head resting on her chest and sighed happily.
Jenny leaned down slowly and kissed her head, closing her eyes as the movement caused her head to hurt.
"I was so worried. They said the surgery went well, but then you wouldn't wake up and they couldn't tell us why. God Jen, I never thought you would wake up" she held her wife tighter, still not believing she was finally awake.
"I'm sorry" she ran a hand through her hair "I'm here now" she added just as the doctor walked in. Kate sat up, but it was clear from the look in her eyes that she was not going to move from the bed.
"Glad to finally see you awake, Mrs Shepard. You had everyone worried" he said with a small smile. Jenny looked at Kate and then back at the doctor.
"So I've heard. Did you get it all?" the doctor smiled and pulled over the portable computer. He hit a few keys and something appeared on the screen.
"The scan on the right is the one we took before surgery. The one on the left here, that's the one we took after surgery" he pointed at the screen. He looked at the women as they saw the evidence in front of them.
"It's gone?" Kate was the first one to speak. The doctor smiled and nodded.
"We got it all. Clean margins and minimal bleeding. I would still like you to do at least one round of radiation to make sure we get everything, and there will be follow up scans every three months just to make sure. But yes, it's gone" he said with a smile.
"Oh my god" Kate said as she turned and hugged Jenny tightly. Jenny hugged her back as best she could.
Kate then got up and hugged the doctor.
"Thank you. Thank you so much" she said, her emotions getting the best of her. The doctor hugged her back and smiled.
While he was there, he did a few checks, before finally leaving the two women alone. Kate came back over to the bed and kissed Jenny, then rested her forehead against hers.
"I am seriously the luckiest woman in the world right now" she said with a smile. Jenny kissed her one more time.
"No sweetie, I am. I get to keep living my life with you" Kate climbed back into the bed with Jenny and cuddled up to her. With one last kiss, they settled in and both fell asleep.
Jenny sat behind her desk, loving the feeling of finally being back where she belonged. What she didn't like was all the emails she came back to.
With a quick knock, she looked up to see Kate walk in with a smile.
"It's nice to see you back behind your desk. Everyone was starting to get annoyed with Vance. Not nearly as understanding, or good looking" the brunette said with a grin. Jenny laughed softly as she turned in her chair to give all her attention to her visitor.
"It certainly feels good to be back. But, it wont be for long" she said getting ready to now tell her wife she was going away for two weeks. Kate crossed her arms over her chest and raised an eyebrow.
"And what exactly do you mean by that?" she asked. Jenny sighed and leaned forward on her desk.
"I just got confirmation that I am to head to Paris for a Summit. Will be roughly two weeks" Jenny explained. She watched the fire in Kate's eyes intensify, then suddenly it went out. She sighed and took a seat.
"I will be calm about the fact you have just come back after having brain surgery, on one condition" she stated with a smile. Jenny was certainly intrigued.
"And what would that be?" Jenny now sat back in her big chair.
"You bring me back a silk scarf. Or two" she grinned and can't help her eyes run over the powerful woman in front of her "And a sexy negligee for yourself to wear for me".
Jenny couldn't help but laugh "Oh, I think I can manage that. Will you be okay?" she now asked seriously. Kate paused before answering, with a nod of her head.
"I will be. I just need you to promise me you will be careful. If your eyes get sore, you get a headache or if you feel exhausted you need to stop and take time out and rest. I can't be there to make sure you are looking after yourself, so I need you to promise me that you will" she said. Jenny nodded.
"I will, I promise. And to prove it, I will call you every day" she said with a smile. Kate got up from her seat and walked around her desk. She spun Jenny's chair around and lean on the arm rests.
"I would like that very much" she said softly before leaning in and kissing her wife softly.
"Just remember to remind them that you are married and she will have no problems with coming there and harming them in the most painful way possible if they even try anything with you" she whispered against her lips. Jenny couldn't help but laugh.
"Trust me, they know" she ran her hands up Kate's arms, wanting nothing more then to leave work and spend the rest of the day in their bed.
"Director I was, Oh I'm sorry" both women turned towards the open door and saw Ducky looking a little embarrassed about what he walked in on. Kate blushed slightly and stood up straight.
"I was just leaving. She is all yours Ducky" Kate said as she headed out of the office, not before sharing a cheeky knowing smile with Ducky.
"What can I do you for, Doctor?" Jenny said, straightening in her chair. Ducky walked over to her and handed her a piece of paper.
"I just wanted to talk about a few days leave. You see my Mother has passed, and I could use a few days to get everything in order" he said, almost like he was shy to ask for some time off.
"Oh Ducky, I am so sorry. Of course. Take as much time as you need. Is there anything I can do?" Jenny asked taking the leave paperwork and signing it straight away.
Ducky smiled softly and shook his head.
"No, it's alright. I will see you when I get back" Jenny gave him a soft reassuring smile and a nod. He turned to leave but stopped and turned back to her.
"I don't mean to pry, but from what I could tell you and Caitlin seem to be doing just fine since your surgery" he stated, making Jenny smiled and blush slightly.
"Since my surgery, you could say we have gotten closer. If that was even possible. She still worries, but that was to be expected. Thank you for checking up though" she said. Ducky smiled and finally left her office.
Jenny smiled as she sat in her chair, really taking in what she had said to Ducky. She leaned back and closed her eyes, and for the second time that day, thanked god she was still alive.
"Wait, I'm just about to sit down" Kate said as she rushed to her desk, sat down and put her phone down on her desk and changed the call to a video call. Jenny appeared on her screen with a big smile.
"There you are. Why does it look like you haven't slept?" she said. Kate rolled her eyes as she leaned on the desk.
"You saying I look bad now?" she replied with a raised eyebrow, making Jenny laugh. She could tell her wife was getting ready for bed as she noticed the silk pyjama top.
"I just meant, that you need to stop worrying and get some sleep. I am fine" Jenny tried to convince the brunette.
"Jen, it's just after 6 in Paris and you are already in bed. That is not fine" Kate stated.
"So, I got you a scarf today. Haven't quiet found the other thing you asked for, but I still have four days" it was clear Jenny wanted to change to subject. Kate sighed and smiled softly. Starting a fight over the phone was not what she wanted to do right now.
"Well keep looking. I expect you to be wearing it when you get home. Of course underneath your clothing so I can unwrap my gift" Kate couldn't help but grin. Jenny just shook her head and blushed slightly.
"No, keep talking" Tony said as he leant on the partition, he was on his way to his desk when he heard the conversation.
"Tony, we are trying to have a private conversation" Kate was starting to turn red herself.
"Well I advise you speak a little softer, Agent Todd. Looking good Director" he said with a grin as he peered at the screen where Jenny still was. She adjusted her screen to show more of her face and less of her cleavage.
"DiNozzo" was all she said. Kate sighed and rolled her eyes.
"Sorry, I thought I would have more time alone" she told her wife, who laughed.
"You should know by now you are never fully alone in that building" Kate nodded and rubbed her tired eyes.
"And if we had this conversation at home, I would have been late and I would be the one dealing with Gibbs" at this they both laughed.
"How is he dealing with everything?" Jenny asked as she readjusted her position on the bed.
"He is hating it. Are you sure you need to stay the whole time?" Kate asked looking over at Tony.
"Director we all sure do miss you here. I think you should come back early. Grumpy Gibbs I can handle, a cranky sleep deprived and horny Kate I cannot" Tony said loud enough for Jenny to hear on the phone.
"Tony" Kate picked up a pen and threw it at him.
"And I think it's time we said good night. I will call when I get up. Please be safe" Jenny said with a smile.
"I will. Get some rest" just before she hung up, Jenny quickly moved the camera so Kate could see her body. Her perfect breast encased in the small black silk singlet top, paired with very short matching silky shorts that showed her shapely legs.
Being mindful of Tony not so far away, she couldn't say what she wanted to. She had to bite her lip to stop all the remarks swimming around in her head.
"I will talk to you later" Jenny said and Kate just nodded before hanging up. She then glared over at Tony who was sitting there like an innocent puppy.
"You two facetime a lot?" Tony asked, a silly grin still on his face. Kate sighed and rolled her eyes, sitting back in her chair.
"Yes Tony, we try and face time every morning and night. And no I am not going to tell you what we talk about" she said rubbing her eyes. Everyone seemed to be right lately. Jenny was right about her not sleeping last night, and Tony was right about her being horny. She could look but she certainly couldn't touch her wife, and that's what she wanted to do right now.
"I need coffee" she said with a groan as she stood up and left the bullpen. Tony couldn't help but grin as he watched her leave. He then changed his focus to Ziva who was making her way to him.
"What has got you grinning like a Cheshire cat this early in the morning, Tony?" she asked as she headed towards her desk.
"I just caught our innocent little Kate having quiet the video call with our Director" he recalled, sounding rather pleased with himself.
"Tony, you do realise normal people would call that ears dropping" Ziva said throwing down her bag behind her desk.
"I think you mean eavesdropping, but it's not my fault I have impeccable hearing" his good mood now deflating.
"You are just jealous" Ziva said with a smile as she turned on her computer.
"Jealous? Of who exactly?" he scoffed. Ziva looked at him with a grin.
"Of both of them. You want what they have, and I don't blame you. They are couple goals" Ziva teased him. Tony just shook his head, not liking what she had said.
"Couple goals? Who are you and what have you done with Mossad Agent David" he almost looked disgusted, but Ziva couldn't help but laugh at him. She knew she was right.
Jenny had decided to catch an earlier flight home and surprise her wife. With the help of her driver she grabbed her bags and headed up the stairs. She opened the door and carefully brought the bags inside, closing the door behind her.
Kate was reading in Jenny's office, it was the only place she was able to relax before bed. She put the book down when she heard the front door, and then the distinct sound of heels on the hardwood floor. She was about the reach for her weapon that was in the trop draw when her wife appeared in the doorway.
"Oh my god, you scared the hell out of me" she sighed with relief and got up to greet her.
"I wanted to surprise you" Jenny wrapped her arms around the brunette, burying her face in her neck and taking in her scent. It had been a very long two weeks.
"I don't normally like surprises, but this one is certainly one of the best" Kate kissed her cheek as they held onto each other.
"Oh wait, there's more" the older woman finally let go of her wife and took a step back. She had this devilish grin on her face, which was starting to really confuse Kate. Jenny started to undo the buttons of her jacket, very slowly. Kate watched her slim hands undid each one until finally all buttons were free and her wife open the jacket to reveal that she was only wearing the sexiest negligee she had ever seen.
The jacket fell to the ground and if Kate had been able to look at her wife's face, she would have seen a very satisfied grin.
"Do you like it?" she asked seductively, her hands on her hips. All Kate could do was nod.
"Well you did say I was only to return home if I got one. So why not give it a test run straight away" Kate finally looked up at her, her grin spreading from ear to ear.
"I really do have the best wife in the entire world" Jenny laughed softly as she moved towards her wife. She reached out and placed her hands on Kate's hips and guided her back to her desk.
"I've missed you" the red head whispered as she leaned into to kiss her wife. Kate's arms wrapped her, pulling their bodies closer together. She then ran her hands over her wife's body, feeling the material. It was a mixture of both silk and lace and it was certainly helping to turn her on.
"Oh god, I've missed you" Kate was finally able to respond as Jenny's mouth was now attacking her neck. Her hands worked on undoing her pants and she helped her get them off. Jenny lifted her up onto the edge of the desk and stood between her legs. Kate pulled off her shift and threw it to the floor, giving Jenny full access to her breasts.
Jenny slipped her hand between them, running her fingers through her wife's very wet folds, causing an audible moan to escape her.
