Chapter 5

Today was April day off and before she could even start her day Reed came in through the door laughing her ass off and frankly she didn't know if she should be worrying or not.

"Alright are you going to explain, or just laugh on my couch?" Reed looked at her and tried to control the laughter but instead peeled into laughter "Dr. Altman walked in on me and Sloan" April looked both alarmed and intrigued

"Like while you were…"

"No after, but she was complaining about her day and clearly was not expecting me, and was half naked and then Sloan propositioned a threesome and all I did was smile and-" she couldn't continue and started laughing again and this time April joined in

"So wait? What do you mean you smiled?"

"Sloan just suggested this threesome and I didn't know what to do so I just smiled at her after he suggested" Reed responded

"Well did she accept?" April asked out of curiosity.

"I don't know I grabbed my clothes, changed as fast as I could and I just left and now I'm here" Laughter filled the room. Reed is her closest friend, she was the only one that even knew about Emily, while Emily wasn't a secret the whole teenage parent thing always did cause questioning looks or people staying away from her or assuming stuff about her or Emily so, she just didn't tell anyone but Reed was the first person she ever told that didn't just find out by chance or remembered her water breaking in the middle of her lecture or any other reason she just befriended Reed the only person who didn't care about all her quirks. Laughing along, she really was thankful for having Reed as a friend.

There was blood everywhere.

Reed's blood was everywhere, She broke her nose and Reed had a hole through her head.

She needed to move, she needed to get out of here, she needed…she needed…

April just moved, her mind blank, she didn't look at anyone, she didn't talk to anyone she just ran and somehow she ended up here at Sheppards office talking nonsense covered in Reed blood and the only coherent thought that passed her was

"Reed is dead, Somebody shot her"

Shepherd went out to check on everyone, doing his chiefly duty and all that, this allowed April to pause for a moment and think and process that fact her best friend was dead and there was a shooter running around in the hospital. She was now wearing the dark navy scrubs the attending wear which in any other situation she would enjoy wearing but her own baby blue scrubs are covered in her best friend blood, the god-mother to her child blood.

Oh god Emily

Emily needs her, she can't die, her daughter needs her, her daughter has no one else but her, she can't die. That thought consumed her brain until she spotted Shepherd, and all she could do was run out and then

POP

Shepard was down and was pointing a gun at her and the same thought 'I can't die' and an episode of Oprah ran through her head so she just spoke

"My name…my name is April Kepner. I'm 28 years old and I was born on April 23rd in, in Ohio… I'm from C-Columbus. Columbus. Ohio. Um, my mom, my mom is a teacher, and m-my dad is a .C-Corn, he, he grows corn. Their names are Karen and Joe" she couldn't stop the tears from flowing "I have three sisters, Libby the oldest I, I'm next then there's K-Kimmie and Alice. I, I, I, haven't seen them since I got pregnant and my parents disowned me" She swallowed her spit and her tears "I am a mother, and I am the only person my daughter has left and I haven't… I've barely lived, Please Please I'm a person, I'm a person" her hands were up and shaking, and she looked straight at him and she hoped, god she prayed for the first time in a long time…

"Run" that's all she needed to hear and she ran…she ran and hid behind a wall.

Derek Shepherd needed surgery, and they were the only doctors that can do it, Cristina, Jackson (oh god she hasn't told him about Reed) Bokhee, and Meredith ( should she apologize? God she didn't know). Cristina made her sit with Meredith which she was grateful for, her mind could not do surgery and she was crying and Meredith told her to shut up, which was valid she wanted to stop crying and weirdly it helped, she finally able to control her tears.

"Reed Adamson was my best friend, she died today" their was a pause and Meredith reached out her hand and April grabbed it and they held hands and waited.

He was in their… Him and Meredith and Dr. Hunt and all the other doctors and she was out here, was agitated, she couldn't go in, she went in when he was agitated before and she almost died, she wouldn't be able to make it this time.

So she stayed out their, in the scrub room next to the OR that has Derek Shepherd, her boss who gave her a second chance at being a surgeon chest open with a bullet wound.

POP

A shot, Cristina screams, Meredith cries, Jackson yells, the heart beat monitor long continuous beep and then footsteps going further away, the monitor is beeping again and she was called in. Owen Hunt was down, conscious and bleeding she and Meredith grabbed him, took him to the OR next door and started looking at his wound when she noticed

"Meredith your bleeding" oh god was she shot, seriously after this April could perfectly understand if the Shepherd-Grey's get a restraining order on her.

"No-No…I'm, I'm having a miscarriage" both her and paused, which was probably not helpful but Meredith was right they needed to get through this first. April and Meredith got him patched up and brought him back and April proceeded to help with surgery, it was touch and go but they got him, was safe and alive.

POP

She heard it, this time it was distant, she noticed no one else heard it, she was honed into it and in came the S.W.A.T. and she could breathe. They walked slowly to there lockers and she realized she was beside Jackson and she said it

"Reed is dead" They all paused, Jackson looked in shock

"Charles?" April realized that during this entire ordeal she didn't know what happened to Percy so she shrugged, unsure and tired but April had one thing left to do.

"Meredith" said women looked at her and April walked closer and whispered at her.

" Take Cristina, go to gynaecologist, get yourself checked out I'll stay with Doc- I'll stay with Derek until you get back" Meredith looked surprised but nodded and said a silent thank you and she went to her Boss's room.

April didn't know how long she was there but Derek woke up, she apologized, he accepted and he didn't seem to remember the comment about her daughter, he probably didn't even process it. She waited until Meredith came back, her phone was blowing up both Jake and Vanessa wouldn't stop texting her and calling her all she did was text them she was safe and to pick up Emily for her. She was grateful that Emily couldn't use her phone, she just needed a minute. Jackson walked in, their were tears in his eyes, and she knew before he even said it

"Charles is dead" and all she could say. April could only laugh and Jackson saw it, the tired look she had and he squeezed her shoulder in comfort before collapsing down resting his head on her lap and he just cried. April just sat their at the chair next to her sleeping boss, her only friend from Mercy West crying in her lap her loud tears were gone and all that was left was the silent ones falling down her face. She got updates about everyone but Alex Karev so she asked

"What happened to Karev?" Jackson barely looked up when but responded

"He was shot but he made it" and April was grateful, the tragedy was done. In came Mark Sloan, he looked at us and usually she could see him making a comment about their position but he also seemed tired

"Go, I'll um, I'll stay with him, you can go" she got Jackson to get off her lap, she needed to see her daughter. She gave Mark Sloan a silent thank you before facing Jackson.

"Jackson, I need you to talk Charles parents while I-um talk to Reed parents" Jackson nodded, this was their responsibility and it was the least they both could do.
