Doubt

He always had static ringing in his ears; it was soft, almost easy to ignore; only when it was totally quiet, he'd hear it. When the TVs turned on, obviously, the static would get louder, more painful.

But now…

Six was a little surprised when, for the first time, it was Mono who let out a frustrated growl. She had been playing with the plushies, the duck toy… hell, she even picked the books she had as cards to build a kind of card-book castle. Her movement caused the books to drop all her effort, and she grumbled under her breath.

Mono ignored this.

Honestly, he preferred the music box over the loud static and weird voice that was sounding at the back of his skull. He flinched at the violent static piercing his bones, his flesh… his mind.

He twitched.

What was that monster doing to him?

He hugged his stomach, trying to calm his breathing. He could feel it; the Flesh walls were contorting and wailing, not only outside of this room, but inside of him as well. It was like the Signal Tower was directly connected to him. He had been wondering, what if Six actually wanted to leave? What would happen to him? If the Tower fell, then so would he…? He closed his eyes, trying to think of something else…

But it seemed useless.

The voice was louder, so much louder than his own train of thoughts.

He pursed his lips.

If Six cared about him, she'd want to leave with him, right? They'd be friends and keep going, together. So why wouldn't she do it? Did she really care about only herself? Then, why was he here in the first place? Why did Six wanted him here? She was being selfish. Mono was almost sure that, if he broke the music box, she'd still betray him.

Because she didn't care about him.

His hands and fingers twitched, anxious. He wanted to grab it… so he could smash that horrible melody so…!

"Six!"

He coughed a little and suppressed the aching of his side. He got up and tried to look around through the rubbish and dust. The flashlight was broken, and he couldn't see. He didn't expect the building to collapse like that. He was able to jump, but he didn't see his friend anywhere.

"Six?!"

"Here…"

He gasped as his sight got better and he almost had a heart attack. The girl was trying to contain her whimper as part of the destroyed furniture trapped half of her lower body. He ran towards her.

"Six?! Are you okay?! Does it…?!"

"I'm… fine…" she gasped out. She raised her hand and he took it. "Pull me out."

He nervously looked up, searching for the possibility of another piece of the building falling apart. Then he looked back at her. He nodded and grabbed her other hand to pull. It didn't take much, really. The wood only trapped her torso, so getting her out was easy. Still, he got hurt during the fall, and he was pretty sure she was hurt herself. As both fell because of the weight of falling, Mono raised his head to look at her.

He was a little surprised she was looking at him too. Her dark eyes were staring at him, and he almost felt like he didn't have the paper mask on. He felt the heat rising in his face and held his breath. He didn't know how, but he found a soft look in his friend's eyes.

He wondered why.

"… Thanks."

Her voice sounded raspy, tired, but honest. She meant it.

Mono shakily nodded and helped her to get up. He noticed some scratches in her legs, but he had nothing to wrap the worst ones. He asked her if she wanted to rest, and the only reply he got was her sitting down, hugging her knees. So, he sat beside her.

"Blue."

"Uh?"

She moved her head a little, and he was able to see her eyes again. And it seemed she could see his too. She narrowed her eyes a little.

"… They look dark… for a moment, I thought they were black. But your eyes… are actually blue, right?"

He yelped a little, almost as if she had hit him in the stomach. What he hated the most about his face was definitely the pair of eyes he got. They weren't normal, and that was the reason people hated him. He was a freak; his eyes were dark blue, but whenever the static of a TV was near and he had to tune the signal, his eyes would turned lighter, almost shiny as the screen of the TV, while his eyeball would turn darker, like the dark outline of the TV.

He had never noticed that, until a group of kids that he used to be in, the kids watched him interact with a TV and they screamed and kicked him out, calling him freak, weird… monster.

Would Six hate him too because of his appearance? She had been his closest friend, the only one who stuck around the most…

His eyes filled with tears, unable to bear that thought.

"I like them."

He tensed and noticed he had been clenching his fist so hard his palm hurt since his nails pierced the flesh with no mercy. He unclenched them and looked at her.

Her eyes were dark too.

At first, he thought they were brown, but then he knew they were too reddish to be that color… in the moonlight, when he saw her once he rescued her from the hunter, Her irises looked like the color that had that drink adults had… how was it called? Whine? Wine? But he just thought they were unusually pretty.

Now, did she just say…?

"Your eyes." She seemed to read his thought, making it awfully clear.

He blinked, and the knot in his stomach loosened. He avoided his gaze and played and shyly replied.

"… Your eyes are prettier."

She didn't say anything back, nor did he.

They kept sitting in silence, until Six got up and Mono knew they needed to keep going.

Somehow, the music got louder. Or maybe it was the static that lowered down. He wasn't sure.

Mono looked up and saw the grotesque monster looking down at him, wondering what was happening.

He softly smiled at her.

"Do you want to keep playing yes or no questions?"

She nodded eagerly.

There was still something nagging the back of his mind, but he would calm down first.

He'd ask her later.

And the music box kept winding.

I know Mono seems a little OOC, but I do it intentionally: Mono remembers his past loops, how he was as a child, and as the Thin Man. So, he seems more mature, but that doesn't mean his mind is okay. Obviously, the Tower is trying to corrupt him, to persuade him to keep going with this loop.

And Six, well, we'll see more about about her the next chap., since, in her state, there must be something we're missing.

Anyway, I'll read you guys, later!
