Lurtz sniffed the air, and a big doggy smile spread over his face. The scent of browned beef filled the air. It looked like meat was back on the menu! The black Labrador bounded into the kitchen with a happy bark.
It was Sarah's baking day, and she was making meat pies. She had just finished the filling and was now rolling out the pie crust. Lurtz ran up to her side, tail wagging ferociously. He really wanted some of that beef. He nosed her apron, begging for attention.
"Who's a good boy?" crooned Sarah, pausing from her work. She pinched a little bit of meat from the skillet and held it out. Lurtz devoured it immediately. He looked up inquiringly, as if asking for more. Sarah laughed. "No Lurtzie, that will be enough for now. You'll have a lovely supper tonight, I promise!" She reached down to pet Lurtz's head. The lab gave a little sneeze and bounded away with a white, flour-y handprint on his face.
And so it came to pass that Lurtz became a member of the fighting Uruk-hai.
