Chapter 1
"Rosemarie Hathaway I'm Headmistress Kirova, please take a seat." I took a deep breath and sat down, no way was I going to let this old bat intimidate me. As the cold leather from the chair crept along my skin I gritted my teeth and looked straight into her eye's as she began flipping through my transcripts.
"Skipping classes... underage drinking… forcibly removed from the boys wing… well well, Miss Hathaway, you've got quite a troublesome record. Not to mention the incident which has brought you to our school." Kirova shook her head as she continued to read the report that no doubt stated what happened on the day of the fire. I looked around the room as her eyes made their way down the page. It was quite a big office for one person to work in, a brown leather couch sat in the corner with a tray full of school magazines. Paintings of the school throughout the years hung along the walls showing off all the school's architectural developments, they seemed to show off how proud they were but if you ask me this school still seems like it belongs in the medieval ages. Two Guardians stood beside me dressed in their all black pristine guardian uniform, leather shoes, black slacks, a black button up shirt and a boring black jacket.
There are lots of things I'm looking forward to when I become a guardian, but their basic uniform was not one of them. I won't deny it, the female guardian looked like she could take on anyone in her uniform. However, when I first glanced at the male next to her I had to hold back a laugh, was that a cowboy duster he was wearing over his uniform?! As I looked closer I found I was having a hard time taking my eyes off him. Looking past the duster I quickly realised he was hot, hell even with the duster he was magnificent! He didn't look much older than me, maybe early twenties, six-six or six-seven in height and a whole lot of muscles. As my eyes finally made their way past his biceps I could see he had shoulder length brown hair which he'd tried to tie back into a ponytail but it seemed a few strands of hair had escaped, framing his face and my god was his face beautiful. His sharp jawline pulled my eyes up to his chocolate brown ones and as we made eye contact his right eye brown lifted up in question. I blushed and quickly composed myself as I looked back at Kirova.
"Miss Hathaway, have you been listening to a single word I've said?!" Oh boy, she seems pissed now.
"Sorry Headmistress Kirova, It's been a long day, I zoned out for a bit there." I straightened my shoulders as she muttered to herself in annoyance.
"Insubordinate, disrespectful and from what I've seen on your transcript you've no respect for school prosperity. If it wasn't for the sizable donation your dad was making to this school you would be off in search of another." She took a deep breath and sat back in her chair. "I don't know what I'm going to do with you, it seems you haven't received proper punishment for your last incident and need to learn some declipine if you wish to graduate and become a guardian."
"To be fair Headmistress, the last incident -" I began but she cut me off before I could finish… what a bitch..
"Honestly Miss Hathaway, I don't want to hear any excuses from you. Your mum is one of the greatest guardians we have, and here you are, throwing away your chance to become as great as her." Oh she did not just go there! I was about to open my mouth and give her a piece of my mind when one of the guardians stepped forward.
"Headmistress Kirova, I know Miss Hathaway seems to be wild and disrespectful -"
"Wild and disrespectful" I jumped up out of my seat "How dare you! You don't even know me!" The term 'if looks could kill' came to my mind as he eyes quickly locked with mine at my interruption and instantly got me sitting back down.
"See what I mean Guardian Belikov, she has no respect for authority and acts without thinking. She has no declipine and no thoughts for anyone but herself!" Headmistress Kirova argued back.
"Then find some way to teach her discipline, guardian numbers are already low enough, we can't let another one slip by, especially a female guardian." I don't know what made Guardian Belikov stand up for me but as he stepped forward I realised this might be my last chance. I sat back and let them debate the issue for a few minutes.
"Keep her under probation, limit the amount of social events she can attend, give her community service.. Give her extra training sessions to keep her busy, something that will help teach her discipline and help keep an eye on her." Guardian Belikov suggested. I wasn't exactly on board with these ideas that were being thrown around but if it meant staying here I guess I have no choice.
"Are you suggesting we have someone staying close to her to help keep her out of trouble? Who's going to want to spend their time off following around a troubled teenager? You?" Kirova asked with a smug smile on her face.
"Well… I… that's not what I.." Guardian Belikov seemed at a loss for words as he looked from Kirova to me. I'm not sure what he saw, a disrespectful teenager or a wild troublemaker, either option did not bode well for me. As I looked at him I tried to let him know that I would try my best and that I wasn't a lost cause. After what seemed like forever he finally made his decision.
"Okay, I'll do it!" He said with determination and what seemed to be an underlying hint of unease.
