PAW Patrol
Pups Save an Impeached Mayor
Chapter 1
The summer heat was getting to Adventure Bay, and for most people, that only meant one thing: it was time to head to Adventure Beach, with Ryder and the PAW Patrol serving as lifeguards. Alternatively, people might use the other section of the beach that was located near Town Hall, with Mr. Porter's restaurant and grocery store not far away. What was not to love about that town? Friendly faces, plenty of things to do, and, most of the time, excellent weather. They got the occasional storm and such, but still, it wasn't always that bad. It had plenty of out-of-town visitors as well, not one of which understood why Mayor Goodway kept a chicken as a pet, or even had a statue made, but Chickaletta was the deputy mayor of the town, whether she knew it or not. (She usually preferred to just do her own thing, especially if she was too busy eating or sleeping.)
Foggy Bottom, by contrast, seemed to be a town where nothing was happening, and it didn't help that its mayor, Mayor Humdinger, was not content to just run that town. He felt he always had to go to Adventure Bay and cause trouble whenever possible, aided by his chosen kittens that made up the KCC, or Kitten Catastrophe Crew. It therefore didn't surprise anybody that when Humdinger first met Wild Cat, a famed stunt biker that Ryder inducted into the PAW Patrol as the first ever cat member, he said, "There's a cat in the PAW Patrol? Well, this day just got worse."
Today was going to get even worse for him. Then again, he was Mayor Humdinger. He wouldn't take "No!" for an answer, and he wouldn't accept losing to anybody. He had many a winning streak going until it finally ended, and in each case where he had a streak, he was now on an eternal losing streak. Some of it was due to him cheating, but in other cases, he simply failed to live up to the expectations of the judges. (An example of this would be the cake contest where he always entered a hot air balloon cake, believing he could never lose. He was infuriated that Mr. Porter managed to get his submission, a Lookout cake, just at the very last second, literally, and he felt Porter should have been disqualified. In the end, Porter won. The third year, Humdinger tried to enter the hot air balloon cake again, but the judge was a different judge, and she disqualified him for not using an original idea. "You can't do this to me! I'm the Mayor of Foggy Bottom, the best town in the universe!" he protested, but she wasn't having any of it.)
Humdinger would wake up this morning to find a shocking article in the newspaper (and yes, Foggy Bottom had a newspaper), but this story was not in Adventure Bay's newspapers, nor did Hailey Daily cover it on the news. He picked it up and started reading it, only to find he was no longer the mayor of Foggy Bottom!
"What?" he exclaimed. "This is impossible! My own town can't just vote me out! It's not even Election Day!"
"Oh, yes, they can, and they did, Uncle 'Regular' Humdinger," came a voice from behind him. Humdinger turned around in anger to see his nephew, Harold, now wearing his purple top hat, and even other sets of clothing he wouldn't normally wear. "Now I'm the mayor! I told you I was going to be mayor one day!"
"My hat doesn't make you mayor of Foggy Bottom!"
"Maybe not, but the paper does not lie. I'm in, and you're out!"
"You cannot just betray your uncle like this!"
"But Uncle, I just did! Now get out!"
"At least let me take my kitties with me."
"Sorry; the kitties now work for me!" The KCC meowed to confirm this, although they actually weren't happy about it. But they felt they had no choice; now they worked for Mayor Harold Humdinger, and the elder Humdinger that was formerly mayor now (literally) had no place to go.
"Oh, fine, but someday you will pay for this!" Humdinger groaned as he got up, got dressed, and left his cave for what seemed to be the last time. It then dawned on him that he didn't have a kitty carrier anymore, so he had no form of transportation. He hung his head, sighed, and walked on out of Foggy Bottom.
By the time he made it to Adventure Bay, Humdinger sat down on a park bench near Town Hall and sighed. What was he to do now? How was he possibly going to get his job back? Did the town really vote him and vote Harold in? Or did Harold fabricate the whole thing just to get his wish? There were plenty of questions that needed answers.
Mayor Goodway spotted Humdinger sitting at the park bench, and (naturally) panicked at the sight. Chickaletta clucked, leading the mayor to think she was also upset, when in reality the chicken just clucked because she wanted corn. She wasn't going to get her corn for some time, though.
"Oh, hello, Mayor Goodway," Humdinger began when Goodway walked up close to him.
"Hello, Mayor Humdinger," Goodway replied, acting suspicious as she always did. "Now don't tell me you're not plotting something, because I know you too well!" Chickaletta clucked again.
"Why do you say that?"
"You're always trying terrible things to terrorize and traumatize our town!" Captain Turbot echoed, also noticing Humdinger feeling sad.
"Yet you seem really depressed today," Mr. Porter put in, noticing himself. "What seems to be the problem?"
"You want to know the truth?"
"Yes."
"No longer am I the mayor of Foggy Bottom."
"What?" everybody exclaimed, and Chickaletta went, "BUCK, BUCK, BA-GERK!" Mayor Goodway then grabbed her phone and announced, "I'm calling the PAW Patrol!"
Over at the Lookout, the pups had just finished the latest episode of Apollo the Super-Pup when Ryder's phone rang. Ryder accidentally set his Pup-Pad to the same TV screen, however, when he answered the call, and so all six pups all could see his face on the big screen.
"Hi, Mayor Humdinger," Ryder greeted. "Is everything okay?"
"No, it isn't," Humdinger replied. "I know this isn't normal for me to call you unless that ridiculous Ruff-Ruff Pack invades, but that's not what my problem is."
"Then what's wrong?"
"I'm homeless."
"Homeless?"
"In other words, the newspapers all announced that I have been impeached, and I don't even know what I did wrong. But no longer am I the mayor of Foggy Bottom?"
"What?"
"No longer the mayor?" Rocky echoed.
"What could have happened?" Skye asked.
"So you don't know why you lost your job, then," Ryder continued.
"No, I don't," Humdinger replied.
"So who is the new mayor?"
"Oh, I forgot to ask that myself," Mayor Goodway echoed. "Who is Foggy Bottom's new mayor?"
"Brace yourself, everybody."
"Uh, okay."
"It's my nephew, Harold!"
Everybody let out a shocking gasp, although not all at once; Goodway did it first, followed by Captain Turbot and Mr. Porter, and finally Ryder and the pups.
"Your nephew Harold is the new mayor?" Chase put in.
"Yes; I am afraid so. He's even taken away my kitties from me. They were my kittens to start with; they are, and forever will be, my KCC."
"KCC?" Marshall interjected, being one that was not good with initials.
"Kitten Catastrophe Crew," Rubble answered.
"Oh. Sorry."
"So you want us to help you investigate why you lost your job?" Ryder continued.
"If it's not too much trouble. I know I've caused you a lot of trouble lately, and I understand if you won't forgive me for it, but let's be honest, I wouldn't do it without the KCC."
"Then we'll be right there. No Harold is too tricky; no pup is too small."
"Thanks." Ryder slid the Pup-Pad in order to officially call the pups to the lookout, but then realized something. "Oh," he said. "I'd normally press this and say, 'PAW Patrol, to the Lookout!' But you're all already here."
"We are," said Chase, "but I just had a thought. If Harold is now the mayor, will he still have that giant robot of his?"
"It's possible," Ryder replied, "but I do not think this calls for the Mighty Pups just yet. This is more like a detective/mystery sort of thing. I'll let you know if I need you all to be the Mighty Pups. But for now...let's get going. We're already at the Lookout, and so I'll instead say...PAW Patrol, to the top floor!"
"Ryder needs us!" the pups all exclaimed out of habit as they ran into the elevator. In a rarity for the pups, Marshall didn't cause a wipeout. "Marshall, you didn't crash?" Rocky exclaimed.
"Nope, and I don't have a joke related to it either," Marshall replied. "Feels weird, does it?"
"It does," said Chase, "but sometimes it's nice to have a break from that."
It took a while the elevator to get started because it was stuck, and Ryder needed to get it unstuck. When he finally got it unstuck, it began to rise as Marshall announced, "Going up!" It stopped halfway up so the pups could don their gear, and soon they'd be underway on another daring rescue. It just wasn't the way they originally imagined it would be.
