Guilt

Belphie's eyes slowly fluttered open to stare up at the starry ceiling above him as an unsettled feeling began to play on his mind.

He held a hand over his stomach as he tried to pinpoint his restlessness — he wondered if it was a simple case of feeling hungry, but soon realised that what he was feeling was a heavy weight in his chest.

With a yawn, Belphie sat up on the sofa and rubbed his eyes tiredly before he cast his eyes around the Planetarium and clutched at his aching chest.

"This almost feels like… guilt?" He murmured to himself with a frown. "Why would I feel guilt all of a sudden?"

His eyes wandered back up towards the ceiling where he quickly spotted two stars situated side-by-side and shining brightly.

"Unless this is telepathy." Belphegor concluded; his brow furrowed as the demon's concern grew.

He quickly tucked his favourite cow print pillow under his arm, pushed himself off of the sofa and set off through the House of Lamentation as quickly and quietly as he could — so that he didn't wake any of his brothers — until he reached the door of the bedroom that he shared with Beelzebub.

Belphie slowly opened the door and peeled inside, he could just make out his twin's sleeping form in the bed to the left through the darkness.

With a sigh of relief and his mind put at ease, Belphie began to close the bedroom door again, only to freeze when he heard Beelzebub let out a restless groan and fidgeted restlessly in his sleep.

He pushed the door open again and stepped into the room, reaching out to give his twin's shoulder a shake to wake him.

"Belphie… Lilith…"

Belphie's eyes widened at Beelzebub's murmured words and felt a painful pang in his chest. He could feel his outstretched hand begin to shake as he finally understood the reason behind Beelzebub's emotions and the feeling of guilt he had had earlier as he became lost in his own thoughts.

He was pulled out of his stupor as Beelzebub began to murmur his and Lilith's names and stir in his sleep again.

Belphie shook his head to recompose himself before he gave the other demon a gentle nudge with his already outstretched hand.

"Beel…" he called out to his twin and shoved the other demon's shoulder a little harder, "Beel!"

"Mm?" Beelzebub hummed groggily as he slowly lifted his head off of his pillow and squinted into the darkness. "Belphie?"

"Yeah, it's just me." The younger demon reached towards the lamp on Beelzebub's bedside cabinet. "Mind your eyes, I'm turning the light on."

He waited a few seconds before he pressed the light switch, causing both twins to flinch at the sudden light.

"Is something wrong?" Beelzebub finally asked, he blinked repeatedly until his eyes adjusted to the brightness of the light before a panicked expression crossed his face. "Did I wake you up?"

Belphie frowned as he surveyed his brother's face while he contemplated his answer; he silently noted the dark circles under Beelzebub's eye that seemed more prominent against his pale face.

"You're the one having a nightmare and yet you're still more worried about me."

Belphie bit his tongue so that he didn't voice the thought that crossed his mind, he didn't want to give Beelzebub another reason to feel guilty.

Instead he shook his head as he answered, "no, I was already awake," he lied easily, "I only woke you up because it looked like you were about to swallow your pillow whole again," he added with a chuckle.

He watched as Beelzebub bit his lip with a doubtful expression but slowly nodded at Belphie's words nonetheless.

A sad smile tugged on Belphie's lips, "so listen… I'm having trouble falling asleep tonight, do you mind if I stay with you for a while?"

"Of course," Beelzebub nodded and gave the younger twin a small, comforting smile — but Belphie could see the relief behind the other's eyes.

"Thanks."

Belphie climbed onto Beelzebub's bed with his pillow and laid down beside the other demon; pulling him into a hug.

He could feel Beelzebub's shoulders begin to shake as he tried to stifle his sobs and pulled Belphie closer while the grieving ache in Belphie's chest intensified.

Belphie closed his eyes and found himself gently humming a soothing tune as he felt a warmth spread to his fingertips and began to comb his magic imbued fingers through Beelzebub's hair until he felt the other demon slowly relax.

He soon stopped humming to listen to the sound of Beelzebub's rhythmic breathing. His own eyes began to sting as he fought off the tears that had started to well up and the feeling of grief and regret swelled.

"I'm sorry Beel," Belphie whispered, "the best I can do is give you a dreamless sleep."
