Blaine

Twelve years ago, my life was supposed to change forever. It was April the thirteenth, a Friday, to be exact, and Sam and I wanted to go out to celebrate Quinn's birthday with her. We bought her a present and saved money for a reservation at a restaurant and a birthday cake to make her happy. That day was supposed to be memorable, and it kind of was, but not in the way we had planned it.

It all started with me running late because that stupid jock at school found it funny to beat the crap out of me. He only stopped kicking me in the guts when my nose had started to bleed. The reason why he had stopped beating me up was only because that douchebag didn't want any blood stains on his fancy Nike shoes.

To make matters worse, Sam got into a fight with a jock as well and got detention, and Quinn got into trouble with the social worker of the orphanage. All the planning for the party would have been in vain because Quinn and I weren't in the mood for partying anymore, but Sam convinced us to go anyway. He told us that Quinn would get her sweet sixteen party, no matter what. These were those little moments that gave us strength during hard times like these.

The nights where I cried myself to sleep were only bearable because I knew that I had friends I could count on. Since we first met, we have been inseparable. Sam and Quinn were like siblings to me and I would have done everything for them. Only thanks to them, our life at the orphanage got more bearable even though they couldn't always protect me.

When we were on our way home around midnight and heard calls for help, Sam just started running towards that direction without thinking twice, and we followed him. A man and a woman were cornered by two men with knives that wanted their money. While Quinn and I were scared shitless, Sam told them to leave the couple alone.

The men threatened us and told us to leave, but Sam didn't budge. He wanted to help that couple, no matter the cost. When the muggers came closer to us, Quinn and I didn't think twice and got moving as well. Actually, three teenagers shouldn't stand a chance against two grown up men, but the three of us had a hard childhood and needed to endure hits and punches countless times before. Our hard lives had made us stronger and more resistant so that we were able to fight back.

But the fight got out of hand quickly. One of the men took out his knife and hurt Quinn, and I would never forget her painful scream when the blade buried into her stomach. When the gangsters saw all the blood, they panicked and quickly got lost. Sam immediately took care of Quinn while I called the cops. The paramedics brought us all to hospital to check on us. While Sam, the male stranger and I weren't hurt that badly, the women weren't that lucky.

Due to them falling onto the hard asphalt, they both got concussions and the flesh wounds of the knives needed to be treated as well. After Sam and I helped the cops with the identikit picture and they left, we were finally allowed to come see Quinn. She and that female stranger were in the same hospital room, and that's how we got into a conversation with that couple.

Will Schuester and Emma Pillsbury-Schuester – that's how they were called – thanked us and were so touched that we risked our lives for just two strangers. Small talk quickly turned into deeper conversations. Three hours turned to six and despite everything that had happened, we were even able to laugh together. Sam and I stayed in hospital until the women checked out the next day and got to know the Schuesters more. We said goodbye even though we were sad that our time together was over that soon. We had felt at ease around those two and for the first time, we were respected by adults.

One week later, they came visit us in our orphanage to spend time with us.

One month after the incident with the muggers, the manager of the orphanage ordered us to her office, much to our surprise, Will and Emma were sitting at her desk as well. The couple declared with tears in their eyes that their gratitude had turned into so much more, and that they wanted to adopt the three of us.

At first, we couldn't believe what had happened. But when we saw the adoption documents ourselves, we burst into tears as well. Thirty days after we had the courage to do the right thing, we got a second chance in life.

Our family grew – and that was just the beginning.
