Lifting the cold beer to his lips Mike took a deep breath when his eye caught the blonde across the room for the third time.
He couldn't help but stare at the way her blonde hair fell across her face when she took a sip of her wine, the way she licked her plush lips afterwards,
the way her slender fingers pushed it back behind her ear when she focused back on the book in her lap even the way she ignored the many advanced from different types of men who tried to entice her the past hour.
Everything about her was captivating, it was like she had some magnetic pull over him and he found himself wishing she'd look up and meet his eye.
As if on cue, the blonde looked up from her book their eyes meeting for the first time since he spotted her.
Smiling softly at her he got a raised eyebrow in return with a head shake and a slight grin before she looked back down at her book.
"Mate, are you going to ogle her all night?" a voice brought him out of his daydream
"Shut up" he hissed turning back to his table
"You've been staring at her since we arrived three hours ago, just go and talk to her"
"Have you seen how many guys have tried that in the past hour?"
"Are you saying you don't think you'd have a chance?" Dylan smirked
"No, that's not what I'm saying at all"
"If you don't talk to her I will" he arose from his chair straightening his shirt
"Dylan don't you dare"
"Sorry can't hear you over the music"
"Dylan.." Mike hissed watching as his friend walked over towards the blonde.
Looking over his shoulder at his best friend Mike tried to hide his jealousy when Dylan shook her small hand, pointing over his shoulder at him Mike quickly turned away focusing back on his beer he heard footsteps.
"So.." Dylan took up his seat "her name is Kate and she knows you've been watching her"
"What? You told her?"
"I didn't have to women aren't stupid Mikey, she knows you've been watching her. She's been pretending to read that book of hers waiting for you to make your move"
"She said that?"
"In so many words yes, and the fact that her book is blank"
"Blank?" he raised an eyebrow
"It's a fake book, you know pretend to read so drunk and annoying guys will leave you alone" Dylan shook his head "haven't you ever heard of women doing that?"
"No" Mike took a glance over his shoulder this time his eyes connecting with hers she offered him a small 'come here' motion with her hand
"Looks like the lady wants your company" Dylan patted his back as Mike arose from his chair
"I'm gonna.."
"It's about time, I'll catch you at work tomorrow don't do anything I wouldn't do" he laughed watching Mike slowly and awkwardly make his way over to her.
"Ah hi.."
"Hi" she smiled softly closing her book and placing it on the table
"Can I?" he motioned next to her
"Please"
"I apologise for whatever my dipshit of a friend said to you" Mike cleared his throat taking up the empty spot next to her
"No need to apologise it got you over here didn't it"
"I um.."
"It's honestly fine, your dipshit of friend didn't say anything bad"
"That's good, I guess" he shrugged
"I'm Kate, Kate McGregor" she extended a hand
"Mike Flynn" he placed his larger one in hers, the electricity sparking between them.
Pulling her small hand back she proceeded to push a piece of hair behind her ear "So, Mike do you often spend three hours staring at a woman"
"Only the intriguing ones"
"I'm intriguing?"
"What can I say, I like a woman who won't take shit from any man"
"And I strike you as that kind of woman?"
"You turned away six guys who all spoke to you this evening including one guy who was actually crying"
"No?" she acted shocked
"Oh yes, he was overheard telling his guy friends that 'he had something in his eye' as he procced to sniffle" Mike laughed.
"You can't be too careful, there are some weirdo's out there"
"And do I fall under the class of 'weirdo'?"
"Hmm, I'm yet to decide" she smiled reaching for her wine glass taking a sip
"I better make a good impression then"
"Yes, I believe you better"
"So in the interest of not falling under the 'weirdo' category I'd be honoured if you go out with me?"
"Are you asking me out on a date?"
"I know it's rather forward.."
"I'd love too" she interrupted
"Wait, really?"
"It's only fair to give you the chance to make up for wasting three hours staring tonight" she smiled, placing her wine glass down she reached into her handbag pulling out her phone "put in your digits and send yourself a text so you've got my number" she held it out for him
"Yes Ma'am" he happily obliged taking the phone he began typing "how does tomorrow sound?" he smiled passing her the phone back
"Are you in a hurry Mr Flynn?" she teased shoving her phone back in her handbag
"Just trying to make up for wasting time tonight Miss McGregor" he winked
"I have a very busy day tomorrow but I suppose I could free up a little time"
"You'd find some time in your busy schedule for me?" he teased
"If you make it worth my while" she shrugged collecting her things she moved to stand
"Believe me, it'll be worth it" he smiled shifting off the chair he stood in front of her
"I look forward to your call Mr Flynn" she reached a hand out
"I can't wait to make it Miss McGregor" he leaned forward ignoring her hand and placing a soft kiss on her cheek
"Goodnight" she blushed stepping back
"Night" he smiled watching her leave.
...
Placing a hand across her still on fire cheek Kate smiled when she entered the apartment she shared with her best friend Nikki,
kicking off her shoes near the front door she walked into the kitchen
"Hey chicka, I just popped some popcorn for movie night you in?" her brown-haired roommate called from the couch
"Since when do I ever say no to Popcorn?" Kate grinned jumping over the back of the couch and landing next to her
"Geez woman" Nikki laughed swatting away Kate's leg
"What?"
"You know most people walk around the couch and sit down, not jump over it and almost kick their best friend in the face"
"I'm not most people" she laughed
"Yeah we all know that" Nikki shook her head reaching for the TV remote "so how was happy hour?"
"It was good, you know the usual men trying to hit on you every second"
"Please don't tell me you spent the entire time with your nose in a book"
"Not the whole time"
"Kate!" Nikki reached across hitting her "why bother going to happy hour if your just going to read a book the whole time"
"Actually I think you'll be proud of me this time, I met someone" Kate smiled stealing a piece of popcorn and throwing it in her mouth
"For real?"
"Mmhmm"
"Don't leave a girl hanging! What's he like?"
"I'm not sure, he spent the better part of three hours staring ominously"
"What?"
"His friend came over at one point and the jealousy in his eyes as he watched me interact with him, I could have sworn my panties got wet just by his stare"
"Oh babe! I'm so proud of you, your finally going to end your 'no sex' diet"
"I think you're getting a head of yourself Nik, lets just see how the first date goes hmm"
"He asked you on a date?"
"He mentioned a date and that he'd call me"
"Well when he odes call make sure to dust out the cave I'm sure there's a lot of cobwebs there"
"Bitch" Kate laughed nudging her with her foot "it hasn't been that long"
"I'm pretty sure a year classes as 'too long' Nikki laughed throwing the pillow at her
"Just play the damn movie" she shook her head hugging the pillow
"I think tonight calls for a Romance, Drama movie"
"Let me guess"
"The Notebook" they answered at the same time, their laughs echoing through the apartment.
Shaking her head Kate nestled into the couch when she felt a vibration in her pocket,
pulling out her phone she clicked on the screen to see a message from Mike.
Clicking on the message she smiled widely when a gif of a Whale waving saying 'whale hello there'
"Is that him?" Nikki grinned getting comfy
"Mm-hmm" Kate nodded
"And.."
"And nothing, he was just saying hello"
"Sure he was"
Shaking her head Kate turned off the phone and placed it on the coffee table making a mental note to reply later.
