Miran hated the orphanage. Of all the places she'd lived, the things she'd seen, this had to be the most vile. It was a government operated orphanage specifically built for humanoid aliens. It was located in the Coruscant undercity, and resembled a prison camp much more than it did a children's home.
Miran had come here after her grandmother's death two years ago. It was amazing how quick it happend. When her grandmother had collapsed and died in the Mon Cala market the imperials had immediately taken her offplanet to the Coruscant orphanage she was at now. Officially, it was not an orphanage, rather a 'acclimatio center'. There were no humans at the orphanage other than the 'instructors' and guards.
On her first day in the orphanage, Miran had been given a basic tour. There were two drastically overcrowded dormitories, a kitchen, and the friendly looking side of the building where people came when they wanted to adopt one of the orphans. The only good thing that Miran would learn there was how to fight.
"Oi, blue, get ova' here, 'dopers int'rested n' you." One of the instructors, a balding human male with a scruffy brown beard snapped
"Yes, sir." She murmured resignedly. She was obviously not going to be adopted again, not after they looked in her record and saw what happend the first time.
" 's a Mon 'al 'oo. 'Idnt 'eem oo 'icky" The instructor told her
"'Obably ants a mai'd." He taunted
"'ot at you'd ake a ood un." He added as more of an afterthought.
"Hello, Miran right?" The Mon Cal woman asked Miran immediately as she entered toe room.
"Yes mam." Miran told her carefully, so as not to make a mistake and be sent back.
"How long have you been here Miran?" THe woman asked again.
"Two years mam." Miran told her.
"You don't have to call me mam you know." The Mon Cal told her teasingly.
"Sorry ma-" Miran cut herself off. So that was it. She'd probably be sent out for that one.
"It's fine." The Mon Cal said casually.
"So where are you from?" The woman asked
"My parents were Mandalorian, but I was raised on Mon Cala." Miran said, hoping she had redeemed herself for her earlier mistake.
"Did you like it there?" The woman asked, genuinely interested.
"Yes." Miran answered honestly.
"Would you like to have a family again?" The Mon Cal asked.
"Yes." Miran said, hoping this wasn't just a cruel trick.
"Well then now you have one." The Calamari told her, smiling.
Miran felt elated. Maybe this time it would work out mabey...
