Author's note: According to an old French legend and poem, every Halloween at midnight, Death raises all the souls and skeletons from their graves to dance for him while he plays his violin. The skeletons dance for him until the rooster crows at dawn, when they have to return to their graves until the next year.
So if you guys have the chance, I recommend you to listen to Saint-Saëns's classical piece "Danse Macabre" ;P
Danse macabre
Night falls over Uchiura, enveloping the city in a dark mantle only dispelled by the light given by the streetlights and the dim moonlight illuminating the streets.
As the bells announce midnight, a creature descends from the depths of Heaven. Its large and black majestic wings shine outstandingly and majestically, darkening the sight of the moon at its full peak, before the creature perches elegantly over the concrete.
Once Yohane fully steps onto the Earth's ground, she flaps her wings softly, a couple of her feathers flying off into the cold night air before she folds her wings to start walking with her head high, her firm steps resonating against the concrete and echoing around the empty streets.
With no particular destination in mind, Yohane wanders around the narrow streets of the quiet city for some quite time before she starts to get bored at the lack of activity in the zone.
- It's only past midnight and mortals are already sleeping in their beds? Pathetic.
Yohane complains out loud walking through the empty streets, kicking a defenseless stone on her way and gaining a light whine from a stray black cat that did absolutely nothing to her.
She grimaces at it, almost apologetically to the stray cat before she keeps going through the streets in search of fun until she arrives to the base of a hill, hearing a faint and twinkling sound that promptly piques her interest.
Intrigued by the sound, she decides to spread her wings out to fly towards the source of the sound, a lonely high school located at the top of the hill.
Yohane stares at the huge building briefly before she decides to descend, perching over one of its windowsills to open a window without any difficulty, clicking her tongue as she does it.
Stupid mortals, they don't even try to lock the windows to avoid any robbery.
She thinks to herself, although she can't complain, being content enough about not having to put any effort to break into the facilities.
Stealthily and with elegance, Yohane steps into the school building to start wandering around the hallways, getting closer to the every time louder sound until she comes across the culprit of it, a magnificent grand piano in the middle of a music room.
Yohane pokes her head out from behind the wall only to catch sight of a mesmerizing long burgundy haired human playing it. The vision freezes her on the spot as she stares at and listens closely to the source of such a beautiful sound.
As she hears the melody progressing, her heart begins to beat to the rhythm of the notes played, completely enrapture by the pianist in front of her playing the piano with such power yet delicacy.
Yohane gets swept away by the melody, her heart pounding even quicker and stronger against her chest threatening to leap out of it at any moment while she keeps observing without losing any detail the pianist's crimson hair shining dazzlingly against the moonlight and the way it illuminates her pale skin.
Yohane can't help but get trapped in her elegant demeanor and the focused but soft expression displayed on the human's features...
Yohane finds herself completely absorbed admiring such a mesmerizing sight in front of her, afraid of moving and breaking the concentration of the angel in front of her.
As Riko moves to the sound of the piece she's playing, her hair sways in the air and Yohane swears she can see red faint sparkles flying out with the movement.
Is this some kind of unknown spell? Is this human with angelic features throwing at me some kind of spell without me noticing it to enchant me in such a manner?
Yohane thinks to herself, her heart still pounding strongly and crazily with each one of the notes that Riko plays. She feels her breath getting caught in her lungs.
Without realizing and against her own will, Yohane slowly starts to walk closer to Riko wanting to observe her more closely but still without losing any detail of her performance. She finds herself extending a hand out at her to caress her silky pale skin but stops midway, snapping out of her trance.
Riko, too focused on trying to play perfectly the piece, doesn't notice the presence of another person in the room until she opens her eyes to find deep and glowing magenta eyes staring her, piercing her soul along petrifying her.
Riko stops playing abruptly, letting out a piercing and terrifying scream, scared of Yohane, who just covers her ears out of pain.
- Geez human, there's no need to yell – Yohane grumbles, bothered and in pain because of Riko's yell.
- W-Who… W-What are you!? – Riko half-yells, half-asks, terrified of Yohane's figure in front of her while she stands up abruptly, recoiling, the piano bench she was sat on tumbling to the floor as she moves away from Yohane who just looks at her amusedly and grinning widely, spreading out her wings as she gets closer to Riko, much to her horror – Don't come closer!
- Ku ku ku, human, I'm delighted to hear you asking that question. Before you is the great and magnificent fallen angel Yohane –Yohane says bowing dramatically.
Riko watches Yohane's bow out in horror, putting more distance between them and surrounding her beloved piano to try to escape from her.
- What!? That's not- They don't- – Riko stutters, watching Yohane's large and black wings attentively before she tries to run away from her towards the door, only to be stopped by Yohane quickly appearing in front of her, gaining another shriek from her as Riko stumbles back.
- My dear human, I believe we, fallen angels, exist from time immemorial therefore the magnificent and vivid proof of it in front of you – Yohane says amusedly, pompously with a mysterious sparkle in her eyes and a mischievous smile on her face.
- A-A devil!? – Riko asks bewildered in a shaky whisper, more to herself than to Yohane who still manages to hear her.
- I told you I'm a fallen angel, human! – Yohane yells, stomping the floor and startling Riko who opens her eyes amused at Yohane's outburst.
- A devil – Riko repeats again with a small smile spreading across her face to tease Yohane, but instead of that, she gets the opposite effect, quickly becoming scared at seeing how the tables have turn and observes Yohane's demeanor growing serious as she moves incredibly closer to her.
Riko brings a hand up to try and push Yohane away only to be stopped halfway as Yohane grips her wrist, pulling her to her body.
- Fallen angel! – Yohane yells furiously to her face while she spreads her wings more extensively out of anger, flapping them to fascinate and terrify Riko equally, making her gulp hard as she observes how some of Yohane's black feathers fly off into the air.
Yohane then takes Riko by the waist, holding her by it as she pulls their bodies together, her other hand still keeps holding Riko's wrist but now in a loose grip before it slips up to hold Riko's hand and they begin to twirl around the music room as if they were dancing to the rhythm of the piece Riko was playing minutes ago. In their minds, Danse macabre's melody still resonates in the room…
Once it ends and Yohane lets Riko go, the burgundy haired girl quickly runs towards the piano trying to put some distance between them again.
- Now human, would honor me by telling me your name? – Yohane says, dropping her voice by an octave.
- R-Riko Sakurauchi – Riko stutters, making Yohane grin, enjoying the effect she has in the human and how nervous she gets while she advances towards her in a predatory way, trapping Riko between the piano and her own body.
- And why a mere human like you were in the middle of this solitary and cold night in such faraway place like this playing this… thing? – Yohane asks her curiously, grabbing the human's chin to oblige Riko look into her eyes while grinning.
- Piano – Riko corrects her quietly.
- Eh?
- This thing is called a piano and I-I was just… practicing – Riko says timidly, almost embarrassingly while lowering her voice as if she was being scolded and looks away to avoid Yohane's deep and piercing magenta eyes.
Yohane chuckles at it, cornering and pressing Riko more against the piano and her body, much to Riko's great embarrassment who blushes and accidently hits the piano keys, making an overdramatic grave sound that resonates against the music room's walls.
- Then you're terrible at it – Yohane blurts out amusedly to rile Riko up, enjoying the reaction she gets from her.
- That's not true! – Riko exclaims outraged, puffing her cheeks and stomping the floor like Yohane did minutes ago.
- It is – Yohane replies calmly, smirking arrogantly while she presses her body more against Riko's, delighted at the feeling of her delicious body against hers at the same time it awakes her darkest desires, ones she didn't know they existed until she met this heavenly human in front of her.
- I-It isn't! I-I'll show you! – Riko complains offended, making Yohane chuckle again at her reaction while she presses their bodies even closer, enjoying the warmth Riko conveys in her slender body and her intoxicating and luring scent.
Yohane then caresses Riko's face, tracing her jawline with her fingertips before she grabs her chin again in a gentle way, pulling it up to brush her lips over Riko's ones feathery. Then, she lets her lips travel ephemerally towards the human's ear.
- Tomorrow. Prove it to me tomorrow's midnight at this same place – Yohane whispers huskily in the burgundy haired girl's ear and kisses the spot underneath her earlobe before she moves away, observing calmly and with a mischievous grin spreading across her face how Riko slides down to the floor, blushing furiously with a hand placed over her heart, looking up at her stunned.
Yohane grins one last time and winks at her before disappearing in front of Riko's eyes, leaving nothing but a couple of her black feathers floating in the air.
Riko catches them, admiring them as she takes deep breaths to calm her racing heart, feeling her cheeks burn at the encounter they just had, recalling the brief and feathery brush of Yohane's lips along with the gentle touch of her fingertips lingering over her lips and skin, making her smile unknowingly and wish for the next midnight to come soon to see Yohane again and be able to dance with her fallen angel to the rhythm of the Danse macabre's melody.
