"This was a great day." Kara said she leaned back against Danny and gave a happy sigh. They had spent the 4th July at the beach with their closest friends and family. Danny wrapped his arms around her and kissed her temple.
They heard Frankie squeal in delight and watched as he chased Wolf and Miller around with sparklers in their hands. Their 3 year old was desperate to get hold of the sparklers as he wasn't allowed to hold one himself. The whole exercise would end in failure for Frankie. But for Kara and Danny it was a win as they knew it would exhaust their child and allow them got some time for themselves.
"I agree, if the boys tire out Frankie, maybe I could entertain you with some thoughts I've been having today." Danny said.
"What thoughts would those be?" Kara asked in a sly manner, but before Danny could answer Frankie ran to them and latched onto their legs.
"Mommy, Daddy, Uncle Woof and Uncle Milla ran out of sparkles." Frankie told them breathless from all the running.
"That's too bad, but I'm sure the fireworks will be on soon." Kara told him. She saw Wolf and Miller head off to help the others with the fireworks.
"But I want sparkles." Frankie complained, he pulled on their legs as if it would somehow help his cause. Danny released Kara and lifted Frankie off the ground and onto his hip.
"Well, we won't have any more sparklers until next year." Kara told Frankie.
"Why not?" Frankie asked, he rubbed his sweaty face against his father's t-shirt. Kara knew he was gonna need a bath when they got home.
"Cause that's how holidays work. Oh, look, fireworks." Danny said, he pointed up at the sky as a firework whistled into the sky. It exploded with a beautiful array of colour and sparkle.
"Whoa, pretty." Frankie said in awe as he hugged his father and watched the fireworks. Kara and Danny exchanged smiles over their feral child. Danny opened up his free arm, Kara slid under it and there they stood as a family, committing the moment to memory.
