To infinity…
-Come on dad!- he exclaimed, hopping on the spot with his hands raised.
-This will be a long shot, son!- replied the evil Emperor Zurg, raising his "ionizing beam cannon" to give him another masterful throw.
-Try this!- he warned him, before shooting. Immediately Buzz sprinted in pursuit, zigzagging through obstacles such as trees, ditches, and steep terrain, which were very little concern to the space ranger.
-Here I come!- he exclaimed, throwing himself into the air and grabbing the bullet.
-Buzz NO!
But the space ranger realized too late that he had made a misstep, pushing himself too far over the edge of that "sidewalk" that kept them away from the heavy vehicle traffic zone. No one was circulating at the exact moment he landed on the asphalt, but after he bounced several centimeters in the middle of absolute nothingness the matter became quite pressing. The light on the pedestrian walkway was already yellow.
-Dad! - Buzz shouted, getting to his feet and starting to run towards the sidewalk, hoping to reach it before being hit by traffic.
Zurg was there on the edge. The space ranger already felt more confident in seeing his fatherly figure. He was certainly going to come to meet him and help him back over the sidewalk and...
But the emperor turned his back on him and ran away.
Buzz stopped in the middle of the danger zone, shocked. Suddenly the distance between him and his salvation became impossible to cross. Even if he ran to his limits he would never get to the sidewalk in time. For the second time his father had abandoned him, even after they had found each other again after a long time, and out of nowhere. At the first difficulty he had turned away from him and left him there, in the middle of nowhere.
Buzz couldn't explain why a parent could be such a coward. Where was his sense of loyalty? Why didn't remorse shake him from his choices? He would have screamed at the sky asking why, in the name of the entire galaxy, his father had abandoned him, if only he had the moral strength. But then he remembered that his father was the evil Emperor Zurg, a sworn enemy of the Galactic Alliance who wished to unite all worlds under his rule. What was he surprised about, after spending a lifetime fighting it? He could even beg his father and ask him why he abandoned him, but he would never give him an answer. No, his father was evil, and he ended up condemning himself to death because of that brief opening of contact toward him. Zurg had won. Slowly the space ranger turned his head towards the vehicles in line, distant but massive and with engines roaring fatal, ready to pass over him without regard. He waited, counting the seconds. The yellow light still shone. One ... two ... three ... four ... fi ...
-BUUUUUUUUZZZZHHHHH !
The green snapped at the same moment that that desperate cry roused the bewildered toy from his resignation. In all his majestic wickedness, the evil Emperor Zurg was racing on his wheels at full speed towards Buzz, carring a large orange cone over his head. Realizing his father's intention, Buzz resumed his relentless run, feeling light as a feather now that he saw that his parent had not turned his back on him. Zurg managed to lower the cone on both of them just in time to avoid a painful collision with the passing vehicles, which passed by them, sounding their warning signals heavily.
-I knew you would not have abandoned me! - the space ranger exclaimed with joy.
-I would never do that now son. The time of war has passed - Zurg replied firmly - Now, why don't we get out of trouble as we do very well?
-Well said dad. To infinity…
A truck passed just then pushing the cone aside. Buzz had just had time to notice a hanging wire in the back of the vehicle before he grabbed his father's hand and reached for it -… and Beyond!
