Hello everybody! So I know I haven't written in sooo long, and to be honest I wasn't planning on picking it back up. But the beginning of season 6 gave me an idea for a story and i wanted to give it a shot.
Here's what you should know before you dive in: In this world Kara had an older sister on Krypton. Her name was Elvi. She was 3 years older than Kara.
She supposedly died when Kara was 11 years old. When Kara was sent to the phantom zone at the beginning of season 6, she didn't find her father, she found her sister.
Her sister had been kidnapped by a group of people who experimented on her and other children to see how the climates of other planets would affect Kryptonian DNA. The group of people knew of Krypton's inevitable demise, and were trying to discover where would be the best place to relocate.
They didn't have a lot of time, so they resorted to inhumane methods to get the job done, but they obviously kept this very secret, so Kara thought her sister was dead all these years until she gets to the phantom zone and finds out that Elvi managed to escape her kidnappers during Krypton's collapse and right before the planet blew up, she found an escape pod with no trajectory and blasted off into space.
As of right now, we don't know where she was for the first several years, but she eventually got stuck in the phantom zone, so when Kara finds her, the age difference is still 2 years.
I know I know, there's a couple of flaws with that set up, but just go with it ok?
The bottom line is that when Kara gets rescued from the phantom zone, she's with her sister not her father. This story picks up right when they get rescued.
Also as a side note, I don't really like Kelly so she just doesn't exist in this story lol.
Anyways, on with the story, hope you enjoy :)
"What is that?" Elvi asked as she and Kara stared at the yellow light that had suddenly appeared.
Kara's grin was enormous, "That's my family, they found me," She said, voice thick with emotion.
Elvi smiled the contiguous grin back, "You were right to hope."
The ground below them shook more, clouds of dust piling around them.
"Come on!" Kara said, grabbing Elvi and flying up into the entrance of the ship.
Someone said Kara's name.
She knew who that person was.
She was by that person in an instant, holding on to her sister like someone holding on to the only rope that's keeping them from falling off a cliff.
She held on like her life depended on it.
Alex held her just as tightly, face buried in golden blonde locks.
"I got you," Alex muttered, quiet enough that only Kara heard.
Kara tried to say something back but instead a muffled sob was all that got out.
Alex held her impossibly closer.
After a while, Kara realized there was a bunch of other people in the room. She looked around at all her friends who had come to save her, come for her.
She couldn't help but grin wider.
She gave Alex one more long squeeze, and muttered, 'I love you Alex."
Alex quickly returned the sentiment, letting Kara go so she could greet everyone else.
That was when Alex noticed the woman standing by the door.
"Who's this?" Alex asked, gesturing to the woman.
Elvi looked first at Alex and then to Kara, unsure if she should be the one to answer. Luckily Kara stepped away from her embrace with J'onn and stood by Elvi.
"Everyone, I want you to meet someone very important, this is my sister from Krypton."
There was an audible gasp.
"You have a sister?" Nia asked.
Of course she was referring to a sister before she came to Earth, but Alex, who's jaw had dropped a second ago, furrowed her brow in disapproval at the comment, but didn't say anything about it.
"Well yes, but I was told that she had died a year before my planet exploded, but she didn't, she- well long story short, she managed to escape before the planet blew up."
"That's amazing that you found each other," J'onn said, "it's a pleasure to meet you..."
"Elvi, my name is Elvi," Elvi said, accepting the somewhat awkward hugs that everyone was now offering her.
Except for Alex.
She stood back and watched, still not over the initial shock.
It went unnoticed by everyone except Kara, who had been watching Alex the whole time, curious to see how she'd react.
"So who are all of you?" Elvi asked with a laugh, gesturing to the group of people surrounding her.
"Oh right introductions!" Kara exclaimed excitedly, "Ok so this is Brainy, he's from the future and a great friend of mine, this is Nia, she's a superhero too and goes by dreamer, this is J'onn, he's an alien from Mars, this is Lena, she's," Kara's smiled faltered for a second, "she's my friend, my best friend," Kara stumbled through her description of Lena, still unsure of where they stood with each other. She cleared her throat and continued, "This is M'gann, and this is Alex, she's my adoptive sister."
Kara inwardly cringed at her words, she shouldn't have described Alex as anything less than just her sister, but she didn't think about it until the words has already left her mouth.
Elvi smiled at Alex, "I've heard about you," she said, "Thank you for taking care of my sister all these years."
It was meant to be kind, an intangible gratefulness being expressed as best as it could.
But Alex didn't hear it that way.
She bit her lip from lashing out immediately, and instead took a second to collect herself before meeting Elvi's eye and giving her a forced smile.
"She's my sister too," she said, and maybe it sounded nice to everyone else. A quick explanation for her actions, a proclamation of her love.
But it wasn't intended to be that way.
Alex wouldn't admit to it, but it was less of an explanation and more of a challenge.
Not an "of course I'd take care of your sister" but an "how dare you think I wouldn't take care of my sister?"
Elvi didn't notice, no one noticed but Kara, who looked away, lost in thought.
Ever since she met Alex, she wondered how she would get along with Elvi. She always imagined they would be good friends.
Things were not going the way she had hoped they would, but what else was new.
"It's wonderful to meet all of you," Elvi said, pulling Kara out of her thoughts, "I never thought I would see another person for all of eternity, much less my sister," she smiled to Kara and extended her hand, Kara grabbed it and squeezed, something inside of her, that had been empty for years, filling up.
Alex was her sister, but anyone who has more than one sibling knows that they don't replace each other, they each hold different spots in your heart, and Elvi's spot had been empty for far too long.
Kara took a breath to steady herself, all her adrenaline was wearing off and her emotions were swirling around her and making her heart pound too fast and her hands shake and her knees tremble and
Oh she really didn't feel good at all, the sparkle in her eyes faded as she tried to gain control of herself.
No one but Alex seemed to notice.
She walked up to Kara, who's still held hands with Elvi, who was trying to answer Brainy's integration on how she escaped Krypton.
Alex gently placed her hand on Kara's shoulder, the one not holding hands with Elvi, and rubbed it softly.
"You don't look so good, everything alright?" Alex asked quietly, but it still got everyone's attention and the room fell silent as they all turned to Kara.
She slowly brought her eyes up to meet Alex, face paler than Alex had ever seen, "I'm fine I just-" suddenly Kara's eyes rolled back and she fell forward, crashing into Alex's arms.
Everyone screamed "Kara!" At just about the exact same time, and in a second the group had surrounded her unconscious body.
"What happened?" Lena asked, frantic after witnessing the sudden pass out.
"She got attacked by a phantom just before you all showed up, but the mark healed as soon as the yellow light came," Elvi said, running her hand through Kara's hair, which, along with the rest of her head, was on Alex's lap.
"It's possible that there were still some lasting effects," J'onn offered, "We should get her to a sunbed and see if that helps."
Everyone nodded in agreement, and J'onn brought her to the sunbed that the tower had for just an occasion like this.
Alex began working, turning on the sunbed and attaching some monitors to Kara's body so she could see her heartbeat and temperature.
"Do you want some help?" Elvi offered, feeling useless just standing there.
"No," Alex muttered as she clipped Kara's finger with an oximeter, she was in the verge of saying something like "I know what I'm doing, I've been doing this for years," but she held her tongue and instead finished up her work quietly.
"She's stable, her temp is a little high but that could mean nothing, hopefully she just needs to recharge under the sunlamps and she'll be fine soon," Alex said to no one in particular.
Everyone gave a sigh of relief.
No one said anything for a minute, the hum of the sunlamps the only noise.
Alex sat perched on the side of Kara's bed, and everyone else was gathered around, either sitting or standing.
Suddenly Kara's eyes began to open, and she let out a groan as her shaky arms tried to prop her up.
"Hey," Alex muttered, helping Kara sit up, "How do you feel?"
Kara blinked slowly, looking around the room at everyone.
"What happened?" She mumbled, voice groggy.
"You passed out," Brainy answered.
Kara nodded.
It was then she noticed the tension in the room and the worried looks on everyone's faces, so she offered a quiet, "Sorry for scaring you all."
Alex lightly wacked her knee, "You're not allowed to be sorry; you didn't do anything wrong," she said with a laugh, grinning at Kara, who smirked back.
But the mood quickly changed when Elvi, who had been standing off to the side watching the interaction, muttered "Don't hit my sister," just loud enough to be heard by everyone but still quiet enough that it could be ignored.
Her eyes weren't even on Alex, she was looking at the ground, as if she immediately regretted saying it.
Kara held her breath, hoping Alex would ignore the comment and move on, she really didn't want them to fight with each other, especially not now when she couldn't think clearly enough to diffuse the situation.
Alex didn't ignore the comment.
For a second, she thought she would, she could bite her lip and move on, now was not the time, but then she thought of the fact that she hadn't seen Kara in so long, and she just got her back.
She wasn't going to allow anyone, no matter who they were, to tell her what she could and couldn't do or say to her sister.
"Excuse me?" Alex said, standing up to stand only a few inches away from Elvi, who's eyes left the floor and met Alex's cold stare with one just as frosty.
"I told you not to h-"
"Stop please," Kara interrupted, not being able to think of anything else to say, "Please not right now, I just got back."
Alex and Elvi both looked at Kara, then back to each other, expression just a pinch warmer, softer.
Alex turned around without a word and was about to sit back down when she noticed Kara trying to get out of bed.
"What are you doing?" She asked as a Kara sat up more fully, swinging legs over the bed.
"I'm getting up, I need to help, I'm fine now, I feel better I can-"
"Kara," Lena said, stepping forward slightly, "There's nothing you need to do right now except rest."
J'onn nodded, adding, "The tower is on its way back to Earth, but it'll take a few hours, there's nothing any of us are going to do except sit around, just relax for a little bit Supergirl."
Kara thought for a moment, she really was very tired, and it's not like she'd do anything helpful anyways.
"Are you sure it's alright?" She asked to no one in particular.
Everyone in the room nodded, and Elvi said, "khgop ji lirw, cofra hdiss serto"
Kara smiled at those words, settling back down on the bed.
Alex, who understood Kryptonian pretty well (Kara had been teaching her since she arrived on Earth), understood most of what was said.
Something along the lines of, "please rest, you deserve to…." And the last word, serto, was one Alex was very familiar with.
It didn't have a direct translation in English, but it was a word that roughly meant, "the owner of my love", but the "owner" part referred to someone younger than you.
On Krypton, the love between an older person for the younger person had a different word than the love between the younger person for the older person.
Serto was a word used by parents to the children, or older siblings, or even pet owners, it was a very endearing term.
Alex knew it well, because Kara had told her years ago that Elvi used to call her that. Alex never used the word with Kara.
She knew it was a special word associated with Elvi and Alex never wanted to take away from that.
Kara closed her eyes and was out almost instantly.
Everyone in the room began to shuffle around, talking quietly or moving to do something. Alex stood by Kara's bed, working on something on her tablet with Kara's vitals on it.
"It's hard, seeing her like this," Elvi, who was now much closer to the bed, said to Alex quietly, causing her to turn.
"Like what?" She asked a little harshly, still remembering the last thing Elvi said to her.
"So," she scrunched her face up, very much like Kara did when she couldn't think of the right word, "So guarded, so weighted down, so walled up," she explained.
Alex stared at Elvi, realizing something for the first time.
Alex had never known a different version of Kara, she had never known the carefree, happy, innocent kid.
She had only ever known the weight of a dead world resting on her shoulders Kara, the panic attacks, sensory overloads, and nightmares Kara.
She never knew what Kara was like before all that.
It made her heart ache to think about all the trauma and pain Kara had gone through.
"Yeah," Alex spoke, voice kinder this time, she understood Elvi a little bit more now.
Elvi knew carefree and innocent Kara, but when she met Kara again, she wasn't a little girl anymore, and Elvi wasn't there to help her with any of the pain she went through.
"This is all I've known her as," Alex added, not quite sure why she felt the need to say that.
Elvi nodded.
"I'm sorry for what I said earlier, I know you meant no harm, you were only teasing. I guess I was just so surprised to see Kara so strong, so independent, and then when she collapsed, I felt so helpless, I wanted to do something, to make myself feel like I was helping, so I, I tried to defend her even when she didn't even need it."
Alex was shocked.
She wasn't expecting an apology, she was expecting a challenge or a fight, but it was so kind and honest and
Relatable.
Alex knew that feeling, watching Kara get hurt or upset but not being able to help an any way that really made a difference.
"It's ok, I-I understand what you mean, it makes you feel helpless just watching her and not being able to help."
Elvi nodded, "It does."
Alex took a deep breath, swallowed her pride, and said, "ghi mbrid jaltre, fgty Kara." (It's nice to meet you, family of Kara)
Elvi smiled, "gytwa dri, fgty Kara."
(And you too, family of Kara).
They held each other's gaze for a second, but this time instead of a cold stare, it was soft and gentle.
Then Elvi sat down on the foot of Kara's bed and Alex returned to her tablet.
And Kara, who was definitely asleep and not faking it, smiled.
So what'd you guys think? Please let me know if you like the story or if you have any suggestions on what you'd like to see. I have a general idea of what happens, but I'd love to hear what you all want to see next. I hope you enjoyed and thanks for reading! Have a wonderful day/night!
