A Quiet Night
Emily and Richard were out. Some of the other charity event where everyone was perfectly happy pretending the small talk and fancy clothes weren't suffocating them. Lorelai couldn't care less where they went as long as it kept them out of the house. She lay on her bed, thinking. Emily would chastise her and tell her to go do her homework. Lorelai didn't care. She often wondered why she felt so lonely and out of place in their world. She was born and raised in it. She was being bred for it. So why couldn't she just belong? Why, at the end of the day, did she feel like she had no one in the world?
The door to her bedroom opened.
"Dinner is ready", said the maid. She seemed timid, as if afraid to approach Lorelai.
"I'm not very hungry", she replied. The maid nodded and reached for the door.
"Wait," Lorelai had an idea that she was sure would make her mother mad. "What's your name?"
The maid looked astonished. Her mouth opened but no sound came out of her mouth. She tried again and this time, she said, "Amy".
"Do you know how to play poker, Amy?"
"No"
"Well, sit down. I'll teach you"
And they played for a very long time, using plastic coins and candy that Lorelai had swiped from her friends' houses. Turned out, Amy was a very funny person.
She heard the sound of her parents' car in the driveway and pressed a finger to her lips and giggled. Amy gave her warm smile and went to answer the door.
Lorelai quickly hid the cards and tokens and jumped into bed.
