AN: Hello everyone! I'm back, with the rewrite of Dreams of Remnant. Silver Legacy. If you haven't read the previous one, that's fine. This story will work just fine with no foreknowledge, maybe it'll even be better that way, who knows. Sorry it took so long, but not only did life hit hard… when I started seriously researching writing I learned how far I had to go, and I felt bad about what I wrote, making even getting a paragraph down a struggle. So I took the creative energy elsewhere but… hopefully I'll be back in the swing of things now.
So several things are different about this loop. Well, a LOT of things are different but it's still the same AU Premise, the characters that have been introduced are still here, but there are some changes to better fit the story and what they went through. After all, one of the biggest regrets I had was how badly I portrayed how what they went through affected them.
What I did change was how I built the world, and how certain characters are connected to each other. So some things will be notably different in some ways. Like the fact that Uni will be getting her entire team at the start, the original reason I didn't do that was I wasn't confident in my ability to evenly split the focus between four characters. However I've practiced, done research, and even started taking some writing classes because I genuinely want to improve
As for our tragic girl… she is a bit different, to make the story flow better and fit in, but she still raises the same question. How can one use abilities fueled by the desire to protect life, when she doesn't care about anyone but herself?
Now, I warn you, the Team Name will be kind of cringy but I found it much harder to make a name with the letters available than I thought. If you can think of a better one please help
However I'll stop talking now, and simply let you enjoy the story.
Prologue: A legend of Silver, Black, Green and Violet
Silver Trailer:
"Took you long enough." She scoffed, bear ears flat as amethyst eyes peered through the one way glass. The worried frown was etched into her expression like a statue.
Her gaze was locked upon a sickly girl on the other side, angry and locked in cuffs. Despite being unable to see through it, her silver eyes glared at the mirror with hate. Even if she was starved and in nothing but a tattered gown, she still gave off an ominous air. She could handle herself, she had made that clear with how much effort it took to get her into that interrogation room.
It was tragic, Wystia thought, that anyone would end up like this. Especially her… how many years must have she been in such a state? She'd be sixteen now, if it was who Wystia thought it was.
She looked a lot different, but she seemed to be the right age. Her skin was darker, but that could be time spent in the sun…
She looked over to her coworker, already feeling irritated. The older man at her side, smiled knowingly as he adjusted his glasses. Silver hair like the girl's, but one of age and wisdom. Professor Ozpin of Beacon Academy. "Sorry, Wystia, even Jade takes some time to work."
"Yeah, yeah…" She sighed softly, biting her lip in frustration. "Well? Is it her?"
"Somehow. The tests are a positive." Ozpin nodded, causing her to hitch a sharp breath. They both knew it made no sense for someone to pop up like this after so long, the fact that she refused to answer any questions about where she had been only made it more difficult. "Have you spoken to her yet?"
"No, it's only been Glynda. Didn't go too well, she tried to fight." Wystia admitted. "She managed to pacify the girl and bring her here though."
"Oh dear. Well I shouldn't be surprised she didn't recognize her." Ozpin hummed. "It's been a long time, and it looks like it wasn't a good time either."
"No shit." She scoffed, clenching her fists tightly. The nails digging into her skin caused her aura to tense. "Do you wanna talk to 'er? Or should I?"
"I'll handle it. If I need you to come in, I'll let you know. I'm… somewhat responsible for the situation after all." Ozpin stated calmly, pushing up his spectacles. "I have… a program in mind for her."
As he said those words, stepping into the interrogation room, Wystia's eyes widened.
Program? As in… Beacon? He can't possibly think sending such an aggressive girl into a combat school! Wystia shook her head. Surely he wouldn't. Though… this was Ozpin she was talking about.
—
"Uni Moon." The old man spoke, pacing back and forth. He was up to something. She knew it. He had the same scheming look in his eyes that she had seen oh so many times. "That is your name, yes?"
She did not reply.
"Hmm, I'll take that as a yes." He hummed softly, locking onto her. "You've been missing for a very long time you know. You just… dissappeared off the face of Remnant. Which brings the question, where and why were you hiding?"
She scowled at the suggestion, the idea of her hiding away like a coward? Ridiculous. "I wasn't… hiding." She hissed through gritted teeth.
"Then what happened? Some of the best informants I know all came to the conclusion that you were dead. A young girl on her own? She should have been easy to find. So tell me, what happened?" His voice… it was soft and gentle, but she knew that he had a motive somewhere. He was a liar.
She hadn't been dead, nor was she hiding. She was… She didn't want to think about it. Instead, she just glared up at the man again.
"Alright, a different topic then. Do you know who I am?" He raised a brow.
That question caught her off guard. It was as if he expected her to know. Vaguely, he looked recognizable, but that meant nothing. Her eyes scanned him up and down countless times, searching for anything identifiable. He clearly looked important, but other than that she was clueless. Even the Blonde who claimed to have known her parents was more familiar.
"Hm, I see. I'm Professor Ozpin, Headmaster of Beacon Academy." He sat down across from her, far too close for Uni's comfort.
A headmaster? Why would some… schoolteacher be talking to her? Uni furrowed her brow, almost scoffing. Shouldn't she be on her way to jail by now?
Not to mention… the Huntsman academy no less.
"Never trust a hunter kid, they're corrupt. It's a quick road to jail or death." Those words rang through her mind, and she tensed up with a scowl.
"Oh don't be like that. I mean you no harm." He almost… seemed concerned. Although she'd wager it was an act.
"Where is she? Blonde. She said she knew me." Uni muttered coldly. She wanted to know more about that.
She had no memories of ever meeting that Huntress but the pain in her chest had been real. There was something going on there, and she needed to know more.
"Glynda? She's getting patched up after your fight. You did a real number on her, which is rather surprising. You have… an interesting semblance." He commented, viewing what looked like footage on his Scrool.
That fight? That hadn't been a fight. The suggestion made Uni scoff. The blonde, Glynda, had wiped the floor with Uni. She still felt the pain of being trapped by telekinetic force.
"She said she…" Uni couldn't get the words out, they were a lump in her throat.
"Knew your mother? Yes, yes she did. She knows your Aunt too. She's in the other room." Ozpin sipped hot cocoa from a thermos—when did he get that?
Aunt? Did she have an aunt? She had no memory of one. Perhaps this was a lie… but then again, her normal life was over a long time ago. Maybe she had forgotten when she was young.
"...can I… see her?" She asked, her tone wary.
"You can. After you answer me a few more questions." He smiled warmly, something that Uni found odd.
"I'd like to make you an offer. You'd have clean clothes, food, and you certainly wouldn't have to worry about your… list of crimes." He began, which immediately began firing alarms of in her head. It sounded too good to be true. "Not to mention, you'd get to reconnect with your aunt. I'm sure she'd be happy with that."
She frowned, but slowly nodded. "What offer…?" She asked. She hated that there was a possibility of being manipulated, but she supposed she also might just be paranoid.
He smiled more. "Have you heard of the Parole Program?"
"No…" She frowned, shaking her head. She knew the world Parole though. She thought at least.
"Well, your acts can be called Survival Crimes. Most of them at least. So we can get that cleared off. As for the rest… under supervision, we'd enroll you into Beacon to become a Huntress." He explained. "Once your years in beacon are up, with my approval, your record will be wiped clean."
Uni felt like there was something he wasn't telling her, but a clean record and all the other promises? It was too good to pass up… even if the man probably had some sort of ulterior motive.
"...I'll do it."
Black Trailer:
The tall black haired girl meekly staggered into the chamber, her wide eyes scanning over the numerous droids in the arena. She had passed her written test with ease, and now it was the combat exam.
The black robots glowed the same red hue as her eyes. In a way, she matched them. Except she was dressed in a lot more white. Since it was an exam up close, she let her rifle rest on her back and instead drew the blade and red blade at her hip.
Deep breaths, you got this Lilith. She steadied her hands, and gave a resolute nod.
"Your test will begin in three… two… one… Fight!" The announcer declared, sounding it off with a buzzer.
He didn't expect much from this applicant. She was tall and lean, yes, but she seemed far too meek to make it as a Huntress. Although the scarlet blade in her hands did seem rather special.
Lilith found herself feeling awe, and even confidence, as the buzzer went off. Enough that she flashed a cheeky grin as she kicked off the ground, running right towards the robots.
She was slick and nimble, weaving through the bullets that the droids fired off. The rare bullet that did hit just tanked right off her aura. Anyone watching would have thought her crazy, as she ran straight into the heart of the swarm—but she had a plan.
She found herself smirking as she released her blade in a large horizontal swing… and pulled the trigger. The vermillion blade split into segments, connected by thread like a whip. The extended blade whirled arlund her with flicks of her wrist, eviscertaing any robots in her immediate surroundings.
Blood Fang. Her mother's weapon. Simple, but impossibly sharp.
She ducked down as a blade whirled to her face, and she brought her elbow up to knock it from the surviving droid's grasp. From there she snatched it up and decapitated the bot.
Yeah, she could swing a sword with either hand. She was awesome. Or at least, she felt she was awesome. She was pretty sure she was feeling the emotions of someone in the viewing chamber.
She flicked her wrist again, bringing the whip blade around the neck of one of the larger bots. A quick tug brought it down and she bashed her knee into it—the visor cracked against her aura.
She was starting to feel the inspector get impressed as well. Which was good, she didn't want to have to tug on his emotions to get a pass—although she would if she had to. She needed to get into Beacon. No exceptions. Nothing else mattered.
She ducked to the left, then the right, dodging more strikes. She pressed the trigger again and snapped her blade back into place—allowing for a swift cut through the gut of the droids in front of her.
She lept forward once again, the last remaining droid nicking her aura. Sloppy on her part, but it didn't matter. She took a deep breath and whirled to face them, charging forth with startling speed that she hadn't shown before. With one last slash, the large robot clattered to the ground.
The buzzer sounded again, causing Lilith to grin as she turned towards the judge. She had barely taken any damage, and cleared the field with remarkable speed. There was no way she had failed.
And just as she thought, the ashy haired man nodded. "Congratulations Miss, I think you'll make a great addition to Beacon. Collect your slip at the exit."
She nodded back at him, before briefly scanning the Heartstrings in the viewer box—she wanted to see who she had gotten that confidence from… and she locked gazes on to a girl in a red hood with silver eyes. It was only for a flicker of a second, before the hooded girl looked away.
Lilith quickly left the arena to grab her entrance slip.
…
She needed to keep away from that kid. Even though, from the Heartstrings she felt, she had dazzled the girl, she had no plans to be social like that. Lilith could only hope she wouldn't be approached at a later time.
She simply went through the process, and signed the appropirate documents to get her slip that would allow her access to Beacon Academy. She had done it… maybe he'd be proud of her now?
"Gah—" She jolted at the feeling of her scroll buzz. Speak of the devil, and he shall appear, so they said. She pulled out the cracked device and read the message.
"How did it go? You passed, with flying colors, I expect?"
Straight to the point, as expected. Her father was… always like that.
"Yeah, I did great on both tests. Getting my slip rn." She replied, before watching the bubble of his oncoming response.
"Good, I'd be disappointed otherwise. I wish you the best of luck in Beacon. Don't fail me now."
She stared at that last message for what felt like ages, biting her lip and holding back a sigh. She supposed that, at least, him not being disappointed was a plus.
Now… to pack for Beacon Academy
Green Trailer:
"Ozpin, sir, first Uni and now this? What in the world are you thinking?" Glynda sighed jn exasperation, following the man down the halls as she looked over the files. Above them, the sign read: Valean Juvenile Detention Center
The fact that Ozpin was taking her here alone was baffling. The fact that it was for recruitment made her question the man's sanity.
"If I want Councilman Kole on my side I need to prove to him that these programs work. Not to mention… I pity the boy." He answered, leading the way through the barren brick building.
"Pity him? Oz, he has counts of assault!" Glynda exclaimed. She knew Uni could get pardoned for survival crimes, those were done for the sake of living. However this boy… he just seemed like a delinquent! No matter how important Councilman Kole's vote was, it wasn't worth putting the other students at risk like this!
"And that's his only crime, ever. And although it's not in the court cases, he only ever lashed out against those who were harassing others. I think he has a good heart, just… a bad temper." He frowned softly, letting out a thoughtful hum. "I think his Semblance shows that he has the greater good in mind, even if he's misguided."
"What? Why would that not be in the records!? And yes, his semblance is admittedly unique, but if anything it makes him a vigilante!" She exclaimed, still finding this to be a bad idea in every possible way. She usually trusted Ozpin's judgement, but she just couldn't see the logic here.
"The law has hardly been fair to the boy. Especially Huntsmen. However I ,think, if we can get him to enroll in the program, and succeed. Kole will see what I mean." Ozpin insisted, pushing up his spectacles as they came to a stop outside the visiting room.
"And how will you convince the boy?" Glynda crossed her arms, resigning to this plan. Clearly she could not convince him otherwise.
"Well, by giving him exactly what he's asked for during the past five years." Ozpin smiled again… which didn't answer the question at all.
"Ugh… you give me a headache sometimes Oz." Glynda pinched the bridge of her nose, reluctantly following him inside.
It was a simple room, completely bland except for a table and some chairs. And at the end of it, a young man sat there calmly. He seemed to be in a good mood, even.
The boy was most certainly not what Glynda was expecting. He looked sweet, harmless even. Tousled brown hair, slightly warmed skin, and emerald green eyes… and a large scar on his cheek. Aside from that glaring trait, he hardly seemed to bear the hostility his file implied he had.
It confused Glynda to no end…
He seemed to scan over the two of them, almost analytical for a few moments, before smiling at her… and giving Ozpin a confused frown. She looked down at her tablet again, and nodded softly. His semblance… the ability to Judge on past deeds… it would certainly be useful for a Huntsman, or a Police Officer. If it's accurate.
"Judas Verdant," Ozpin began, "It's nice to meet you." He smiled, taking a seat at the end of the table.
"You as well… but what's a Headmaster for a Huntsman academy visiting me?" He frowned visibly at just saying the word huntsman. Which made sense to Glynda, after having read the first case the boy was involved in.
"Well it's quite simple. I want you to enroll." He placed some documents on the table, but before he could continue Judas interjected.
"No. I don't want what you're selling. I turn eighteen in a few weeks, my case will be reviewed, and I'm free to go. I'm not going to be a Huntsman just to get out three weeks early." He shook his head, politely declining the offer.
"Early release isn't what I'm selling, Mister Verdant." Ozpin stated, crossing his arms.
"...then what are you offering?" Judas frowned more. Even Glynda leaned in a bit, curious as to what was going on.
"What if I told you I could get that case from five years ago reopened?" He slid the papers forward, and let the boy scan over them for several moments.
Judas' eyes widened, and he sat up properly. "...then, Ozpin, I'd say you have yourself a deal."
"Good. We'll have you out, in Beacon, and the investigation started by the end of the month." He nodded back.
"That's all I ask for." Judas nodded sternly.
Violet Trailer:
She pulled her detached sleeves up a bit, making sure they were tight and snug before she adjusted her hood. She made her way through the crowd of the facility. She felt antsy, being around so many people—people that had heard her name over the intercom. And once they heard that name, they all recalled the story that followed it.
She'd never lose that reputation, that one mistake haunted her…
She could feel their stares on her. And her heightened sense allowed her to pick out the whispers. They were all talking about the same thing.
That she was bad news.
And sometimes, she thought that maybe they were right.
Her frown deepened as she left the area. She didn't bother to check her scores or anything like that. She just grabbed her slip, and began to leave. After all, she knew she had gotten perfect marks on both tests.
...it had been so easy to rip through those robots without taking a single hit. Her training had been harsh, but… it clearly was effective. Even if she didn't have a fancy semblance like her teacher's.
Her semblance was the equivalent of brute force, but that's probably because she never trained with it.
She left the testing center and stepped out into the streets of Vale, the hustle and bustle of bystanders completely unaware of who she was… it was much more relaxing than the whispers of her fellow students. She began to walk back towards her apartment… but that didn't last long.
She felt a chill run up her spine, and she immediately tensed up.
"Nova…" A frighteningly familiar lady's voice brushed against her ear. She quickly jabbed her elbow out, but she only hit the air. "Tch." She picked up the pace, and broke out into a light jog.
...no one noticed when she was hooked and yanked into an alley.
She staggered and stumbled back, quickly catching herself and looking around for what grabbed her. Or more accurately, who had grabbed her.
"Tch, Akane." She grumbled, seaprching for the lady in question. Her eyes widened as she whirled to the side, a knife whipping past and stabbing into the wall.
From there, she frantically dodged—practically dancing to avoid blades that came from nowhere. With her unnatural flexibility though, she had little trouble.
"Show yourself, damn it." She hissed, raising her right gauntlet to block another knife. She had it in shield formation—the three curved segments forming a miniature buckler to block with.
"Aw, aren't you happy to see me?" She whirled to face the voice. Akane wasn't that much older than her, although she was still an adult. Donned in a red suit while twirling a throwing knife, she just had to look like a movie villain, huh.
"No. I told you that I'm not interested. I appreciate the help you gave me, but I'm not working for you." Nova spat out, drawing her sword. Starcutter. A very special blade. Although she thought the name was a bit too fancy for her tastes, that wasn't her choice.
"Don't tell me you actually plan to fight me?" Akane raised a brow, appearing in front of her in an instant. Her crimson eyes bore holes into Nova.
"I will try… if you don't leave me alone." Nova hissed, glaring back.
"..." She remained staring for a long time, as if testing whether or not Nova would back down. It felt like ages, but eventually Akane backed up.
"No matter what you say, you still owe me a favor. And I want compensation. I'll message you when the time arrives." Akane scowled, running a hand through her scarlet locks as she walked away.
Nova didn't reply, watching as the lady disappeared into thin air.
…
"Tch. Who even wears that much red?" She scoffed, walking back into the street. Why was it so hard to cut ties with that lady and her group?
AN: And that's the start! A bit of a teaser about each character of the story. I'd love to hear what you all think! Some are familiar to my old readers, some aren't. Although Nova & Judas were in my plans for the old novel, I just didn't get that far in. This time around, they're all here at the start.
I don't have a consistent schedule, considering I'm working on this, Mind & Soul, and my Original Story over on Ao3, Wattpad, and Fictionpress. Not to mention that I type these on my phones, but I hope to bring you all more soon!
See you all next time!
