DM Edith's Bad Report
It was report card day at school and there they all were in their envelopes on each desk in each classroom when the classes returned from lunch. In Edith's class, most of the children sat right down, took their report cards out of their envelopes and looked at them. But not Edith. She just there and stared at the envelope. It was a clean sweep. Edith had gotten a terrible grade in every subject except physical education! That was the problem.
Edith was so taken up with physical education that she had let her other subjects slide, slide and slide. It hadn't happened overnight and perhaps Gru and Lucy should have seen it coming. But what was one thing and another, they hadn't and now Edith was in hot water up to her eyeballs. Today it was Dru's turn to pick the girls up from school and on the way home, Margo could tell Edith must have gotten a very bad report card. She was looking straight ahead and walking like a robot.
''Hi girls, how was school?'' Lucy asked when they got home. "Mom, it was awesome! I did my report card very easily!'' said Margo as she showed her mom a letter from her teacher Miss Frannie. "Oh my! Margo, that's a lot of A's! I'm so proud of you, my awesome girl!" Lucy said picking her eldest daughter up and hugging her tightly, "Come here, you!", Lucy kissed Margo on the head. Agnes showed her report card to Gru. "Look, Daddy!" she said happily. Gru glowed. "Awww, sweetheart, dat's sweet" he said.
Then he said. ''Edith where's your report?''. Edith gulped violently. She handed over her report. Gru's smile disappeared when he took one look at Edith's report. His eyes crossing with darkness. Sensing some danger, Agnes hid behind Lucy as the Minions cleared the room. But all was full of silence for a second, but for much longer when it finally came. Gru roared and raged so much it shock the whole house! Then came the biggest explosion ever heard in the house! It shook the earth. It trembled the trees. It scared all of the animals into binding holes, dog houses, and even bee hives.
Gru said all the things dads say when they see a really bad report card. "THIS IS THE WORST REPORT I'VE EVER SEEN! IT'S A DISGRACE! AN OUTRAGE! TO THINK THAT ONE LITTLE GIRL OF MINE . . . .". Lucky quickly hid under the table, trembling in his bleats. Gru calmed down and stared down at Edith. "Well, Edith? What do you got to say for yourself?". ''I guess I'm grounded'' said Edith quietly.
"YES!" bellowed Gru angrily. "GROUNDED! THERE'LL BE NO MORE PRANKS, OR NINJA SKILLS, OR GOING TO THE PARK, OR SKATEBOARDING, OR MESSING AROUND WITH MY FREEZE RAYS, OR CAUSING TROUBLE OR MAYHEM! AND FURTHERMORE...". Lucy saw tears forming in Edith's eyes and her lip beginning to tremble, she came to her rescue. "Stop yelling!" she commanded. Then she turned to her middle-aged daughter. "Your Dad's right, sweetheart. I'm sorry, but you're gonna be grounded till you pull your marks up''.
''But that'll take forever!'' said Edith, ''It's like being grounded for life!''. "I'm afraid that's how it's going to be!" Gru snarled. "You won't be able to do anything as long as you live". Lucy watched as Edith slunk sadly up the stairs to her room which she shared with Margo and Agnes. Edith sat in her room and looked around and sighed. She took off her boots and slumped her head down onto the pillow, feeling way too depressed. Edith didn't stay in her room for long. She soon came down again. Lucy wasn't surprised.
She could almost see a cloud of gloom above Edith's head as she wondered from one room to another, a lost soul in her own house. Edith went outside and sat on the steps. Lucy came out and sat down next to her. Gru, Dru, Margo and Agnes watched from the window. ''You know sweetie, it's not the end of the world'' said Lucy. ''It may as well be'' said Edith. ''All you have to do is pull your marks up'' said Lucy. ''By the time I pull my marks up, soccer season will be over'' sighed Edith, ''Since I can't do anything else, I guess I'd better start hitting the books''. She went back into the house. Dinner that night was pretty glum. It was as if the whole house was grounded. Dru, Lucy, Margo and Agnes cleared the table quickly so Edith could use it to work on her studies.
''Hey look'' said Gru as he scanned the paper, ''Dere's a pretty good movie playing at de cinema. What do you say we take in a…''. But Gru didn't finish what he was saying because Lucy frowned and shock her head no. There was no way the rest of the family was going to take in a movie while Edith was home struggling with fractions and percentages. Word that Edith was grounded got around quickly the next day. The school coach was pretty disappointed when he heard about it.
The team had some big soccer matches coming up and they wouldn't have much of a chance without their star goalie. That evening, Lucy took Gru aside. ''My dear'' she said, ''I'm just as disappointed in Edith's report card as you are, but in a way we're almost as much to blame as Edith''. ''We are?'' said Gru in surprise. ''That's right'' said Lucy, ''There's more to being a parent then cheering at soccer games. We should have been checking on her work''.
''What do you think we should do?'' asked Gru. ''I think she's having a hard time with fractions and percentages'' said Lucy, ''You used to be a whizz at that sort of thing. Why don't you help her?''. But it turned out that Gru was pretty rusty so Lucy helped both of them. Even Margo pitched in. She quizzed Edith on her vocabulary words. The family lost track of time and went to bed late. It was more of the same the next morning.
But besides from her regular homework, Edith had to make a model of the solar system. Luckily Lucy had enough bits and pieces on hand to do the job and just as they had the night before, the four of them pitched in. By the time Edith got home from school the next day, Gru had had enough. [It helped that Edith had gotten a B in a fractions and percentages quiz and an A for her solar system] ''Look'' said Gru. ''Everyone wants me to ease up on you, your big sisters, your friends. I even had a call from your soccer coach and I'm willing. But you've got to promise dat you'll pull your grades up and dat you'll never fall behind again''.
''I promise'' said Edith, ''I don't wanna get a report card like that ever again!''. ''Good!'' said Gru. ''Dat's a big load off my mind. Cos I don't wanna go through being grounded again''. ''Me neither'' said Margo. ''Me neither'' said Lucy, ''Me neither'' said Edith with a big grin.
The End
