Eating hot pot in the middle of the summer at Coach Sasabe's house had become something of a tradition, a meeting where all of them could be as nonsensical as their elementary school selves – and their high school selves as well. At first, it was only the Iwatobi Swim Club the ones that gathered, but soon the 'event' gained traction, and certain students from other schools and universities – even the ones set in other countries – joined.

"This is nice."

Rin was seating next to Haru on the back porch. Nagisa and Mikoshiba were chasing fireflies in front of them while Rei and Nitori tried to keep them from crashing into anything, but he seemed to pay them no mind. His eyes were towards the starry night sky, although his head mustn't have been completely in the clouds if he was speaking to Haru.

"I haven't done this in a while," he continued.

"That's what I said to Makoto when we did this for the first time in junior year," Haru answered.

Right now, Makoto was helping Coach in the kitchen. Along with Natsuya. Ikuya had stayed inside the house, too. It felt surreal how all their paths had crossed after so many years.

It had been surreal when they first met again with Rin. It felt like a punch in the gut. It had been that much shocking, and strong, and disorienting; so many feelings coming back after so long. And here they were at this moment…

"Junior year," Rin mused playfully. "It feels like it was centuries ago."

"It was three years ago," Haru reminded him. "So you, being that exaggerated."

"So you, being that dense," Rin threw back, chuckling. Although his amusement died down. "I guess I never apologized for that, right? The entire year I spent being a dick."

Haru looked at him through the corner of his eye. "It doesn't matter now, you've made up for it."

"Awwww! Have I?"

Rin scooted closer to Haru with a mischievous grin, and Haru turned away. He didn't know why he bothered thinking Rin could be serious for once.

Another chuckle from Rin's part. "It's pitch black in here and I can see you're blushing."

Haru frowned. "Bite me."

Rin's lips appeared in the hollow between Haru's throat and shoulder, brushing against his skin with each word, "If you insist…"

His steamy breath crashed beneath Haru's earlobe.

Haru nearly fell from the step they were sitting on. It seemed like Rin couldn't stop laughing.

"We're in public, you know," Haru scolded him.

"You're so fucking hot when you're mad."

Haru had to repeat himself he was mad and look away once more before Rin's grin had any effect on him. (Not that it naturally had any.)

"Anyhow…" Rin muttered, returning his eyes to the sky. "Please, do consider this my formal apology for being a jerk. Around three years late, but better late than never."

Haru stared at him for a moment. "You weren't a jerk. It was probably my fault, too, for not being clear about my feelings."

"Guess we are a couple of dumbasses then," Rin said, stretching and laying down.

Haru followed suit.

"Do you know how the shade of blue of the sky is called?"

Haru shook his head. "No. Why?"

"Been trying to figure out the shades of blue of your eyes. They ain't common, the 'Shade #' kind of stuff; so I've been trying to find the closest second-best. I wanted to say something like how the night sky resembles some dark spots you have, and the stars resemble the way your eyes shine, but… they don't fit. Your eyes are prettier."

Haru, again, just stared, and that flood of overwhelming emotions hit him once again. It was as though he was seeing Rin for the first time once more. Handsome, lively Rin. And years of memories – all the times he saw Rin 'for the first time' – passed before him.

"See something you like?" Rin shot him another flirtatious grin.

Smug face, Haru thought, smiling back.
