Ochako was heartbroken. Not only was Deku taking an extended trip to America with All Might, but she hadn't even told him her feelings yet. They were all third years at this point and All Might decided that it was high time to reveal Izuku as his successor, which was amazing. Ochako wanted to support Deku anyway she could, so she chose to bottle up her feelings in an effort to help him focus on his career as a hero. They were all focusing on their soon to be careers as heroes, but even then, some of their classmates started dating and still had their hearts set on being the best heroes they could be. It just seemed to make her feel that she had been holding it all in for nothing at this point.
Mina had noticed her behavior and decided to act. She couldn't have her friend moping around over a guy! Everyone knew Ochako liked Deku, everyone except him of course, so if he couldn't even catch on, then he wasn't worth it. So she went to her boyfriend Eijiro Kirishima to hatch a plan.
"Hey Kiri, you've seen how Ochako's been acting right?" Mina asked him as she flopped onto the couch in the common area.
"Yeah, she seems super bummed since Midoriya left. Why do you ask?"
"Well, I was hoping to make her feel better, take her out for some Karaoke or something. Maybe pair her up with someone in an attempt to get over Izuku."
"Ah, I see where your heads at babe! Who'd you have in mind? There's a couple of people to choose from between our classes." Kirishima thought of a few potential love interests for his friend.
"I was thinking specifically Bakugo, she once told me that she though he was pretty cute last year. And they seem to be pretty chill with one another. An added bonus is that it wouldn't seem like an obvious setup since he's your best friend!" Mina shrugged and smiled at her boyfriend, hoping he would agree.
"That's a pretty good idea actually, sometimes I think Katsuki likes her too. Have you seen how he looks at her? He's always sneaking glances at her whenever she's having a good time with Midoriya." He agreed and the plan was hatched.
They waited a little while to put it in motion, making sure there was no way either party could get out of going out. Everything was planned down to the day and time, now it was time to act. Eijiro was set to ask Ochako and Mina, Bakugo.
"Hey Uraraka," Kirishima jogged up to her as they were leaving school and wrapped his arm around her neck, "you wanna go do some Karaoke tomorrow with me, Katsuki, and Mina? We're all planning to go after school. You in?"
"Um, sure, it sounds like fun." The brunette smiled as she accepted the invitation. She'd almost forgotten how to have fun between focusing on being a hero and her broken heart.
Simultaneously, Mina was asking Bakugo to go with them. Katsuki was checking his phone outside the dorms when Mina arrived.
"Bakugo, you wanna go with Kiri, me and Ochako to a Karaoke place tomorrow?"
"No." Katsuki simply answered, not even looking at her.
"Great, Kiri's gonna help you pick out your clothes! It'll be so much fun!"
"I SAID NO RACCOON EYES!" Bakugo yelled as Mina scurried off, ignoring him all together.
He really didn't care for karaoke in general, but he wasn't one to let down his friends, especially Kirishima since he'd be there. Eijiro always had his back whether it be at agency collaborations or in their everyday lives, he could at least go hang out. Thinking back, he thought of when he was rescued from the League of Villains when they were first years, Kirishima had been right there trying to save him. Not to mention he had been the first person to try befriending him, ignoring every wall that was put up. Katsuki would go, but he'd try not to enjoy himself, it's not like he wanted to go anyway. But of course his mind wandered to the brunette who would be there as well, Ochako Uraraka, probably the most well liked person in their class. Sure, he thought she was cute and had a powerful quirk, he sees it every year at the sports festival. She still can't best him in a fight, but she always gets close to it. He totally liked her, but would never admit it, besides, she was too infatuated over that nerd Deku.
It was finally time to go to the Karaoke place. Kirshima wore khaki cargo shorts, a white top, and a flashy blue Hawaiian shirt over it. He made Bakugo wear baggy black jeans with a shirt that said, "May all your bacon burn," a Howl's Moving Castle quote. Katsuki loved Ghibli films, they were always so entertaining and even made him emotional at times. Soon the girls came off the elevator. Mina chose to wear a green cropped vest with a black camisole underneath as well as some black leggings, which was a bit simpler than her usual outfits. Ochako picked out light blue skinny jeans, a plain white tee, and an oversized yellow flannel over top.
They all took the train to a place called Hot Mic, they served food as well, so it killed two birds with one stone. Everyone agreed to share a couple of appetizers rather than buying full meals straight away. The girls ordered sparkling waters while the guys chose Pepsi. While they were waiting for their food, Mina stood up and picked out her first song, It's Raining Men. She was already having so much fun, singing her heart out to the song about men falling out of the sky. She was out of breath when she finished but couldn't stop giggling. Ochako gave her a high five as Kirishima went next, singing I think I love you by Tenacious D. It was painfully obvious that he was singing this directly to Mina, especially since he kept looking between her and the screen. Mina's face turned a deep shade of her pink, as he finished singing, he came right up to her and kissed her forehead. Katsuki and Ochako looked at each other and blushed, feeling as if they were intruding on a date, and that they were third wheeling despite being a group of 4.
Soon after, their food was delivered and everyone started taking bits off the trays, Ochako went to sing next, choosing Training Wheels by Melanie Martinez. She really liked her as an artist, the use of childlike imagery while singing of serious and adult topics fascinated her. She hadn't even noticed that everyone had stopped eating to give her their undivided attention when the song was over. Ochako sat down quickly, blushing as she felt embarrassed.
"Dude, Uraraka, you never told us you could sing like that! You're amazing!" Kirishima exclaimed as everyone else nodded, even Bakugo agreed that it sounded great.
Ochako tried to calm down by trying some of the nachos Bakugo was eating. They tasted pretty good. Then she saw him glancing at her a little bit.
"Um, I think it's your turn Katsuki." She said, trying to get him to stop looking at her.
"Oh yeah, it is your turn, you gotta go next. We don't wanna leave you out, it'd be pretty crappy of us." Mina chimed in as Kiri pulled his friend up to the mic.
"Fine, but I won't enjoy it ." Katsuki scrolled through the list and picked Animal I Have Become, he loved this song, and it was a completely different sound than everyone else.
The music started playing as he tapped his foot, waiting for the words to come on the screen. He knew the song by heart, practicing the drums to it when he was younger. He knew all the lyrics, and got so entranced with the vibe that he looked like he was actually fun. Everyone noticed and started bobbing their heads along. Eijiro wasn't surprised in the least, he knew what types of music his best friend enjoyed, and knew he'd wanna stand out since they made him come here.
"How was that? Happy now?" He went back to sitting down, taking large gulps of his drink.
"It was great! I remember my dad listening to that song when I was younger, he liked his rock music." Ochako giggled and it made Katsuki blush.
Bakugo had to admit he was having a good time so far. The next round of them singing started with Mina singing Tongue Tied by Grouplove, then Kirishima parading around the small stage to Photograph by Def Leppard; he loved 80's music, it always felt manly jamming to them. Before it became Ochako's turn again, they called in a food order. Both Eijiro and Katsuki ordered burgers, Mina got a sushi sampler, and Ochako ordered some pork ramen with a side of sakura mochi as dessert. After they put it in, she said her mom's favorite song, Fantasy by Mariah Carey. She had told Ochako that that song played in her head the first time she saw her future husband, Ochako's dad, so it had a special place in her heart.
Something in Katsuki's heart wouldn't leave him alone while Uraraka sang that song. He knew it was just a song, but man he wished it were about him. He was always a bit envious of Mina and Eijiro's relationship, especially now, them singing songs to or about one another while he was sitting there wanting to be in a relationship with the girl on stage. Then it hit him, he would in act sing a song to her, albeit in an odd way. He rushed on stage when she got down and pulled up the song Earfquake by Tyler, the Creator. As he sang, he looked at her, smirking the whole time before the song ended.
"Oh my gosh, Kiri, did Bakugo just sing that song for Ochako." Mina whispered into her boy friend's ear, hoping their plan worked.
"Oh yeah babe, he totally did!" He whispered back a bit louder.
"Oi, I can hear you Stupid Hair, and don't think I didn't hear you too Raccon Eyes! I just felt weird if I looked at one of you two while singing that."
"Then why not look at the floor?" Ochako was blushing and fiddled with her hands.
"There's more feeling if you sing directly to a person, that's all," Katsuki felt a deep blush creep onto his face, "I wouldn't protest if you did the same with me. We're friends right, so I think it's fine."
"If that's the case, then I will." Ochako got up and chose the song Kiss Me More. That made mIna light up and come to the stage as well, saying she wanted to do SZA's part. Ochako was embarrassed about what Bakugo did and felt the need to get back at him directly, so choosing a song about making out felt like sufficient payback. She looked directly at him and sang the song with as much passion as she could. Mina was having fun with the idea, dancing around and singing her part directly to Kirishima who had a stupid grin on his face, enjoying whatever was going on. Bakugo on the other hand felt embarrassed, he already liked her, but this made it worse, the whole song really. Thankfully he didn't notice Uraraka's own embarrassment due to the lights overhead, she didn't know why she did this other than wanting him to feel how she felt. But singing the song made her heart beat a mile a minute, the idea of kissing him was enticing, but they wouldn't happen, even if they were more than friends, there was no way he'd actually let people know; he was such a closed off person, not opening up about a lot of things, not because he didn't want to, but because most people never truly get past his abrasiveness unless they observe him.
"That was amazing girls! It was rockin! The passion! The power! We should all do duets now, it was so awesome!" Kirishima gushed over his girlfriend and her bestie as they had some more of their drinks.
"Go for it, it's super fun!" Ochako let out a tired breath as she sat when Bakugo eyed her and went on stage with his friend, going with whatever song Kirishima chose.
Eijiro chose Macho Man by Village People, it was on his workout playlist, always motivating him to be the strongest he can be to not only be a strong hero, but to actually protect people. Kiri went all in on the song while Bakugo just sang supporting parts, making Mina playully boo at Katsuki not backing up her boyfriend witht he same energy. When the song ended, Mina moved her boyfriend's bestie off the stage to show him how it's done. She picked Level of Concern by Twenty One Pilots. She and Kiri loved this song and both sang it with such heart that put their previous solo performances to shame.
"Now that you've seen how it's done, come back me up Bakugo. I've got just the song for us." Mina beckoned Katsuki on stage with her, typing in the song Prom Dress Remix, a version of Prom Dress by mxmtoon but with additional vocals from Lil John. All he had to do was play Lil John's part with the right energy. It actually went really well, giving the right energy, obviously it was just yelling, but it was still humorous.
"Hey, we should do a fun little song next, nothing serious." Eijiro whispered to Ochako next to him, receiving a nod from. Their song was Doom Crossing, based on two games, Animal Crossing and Doom. Both games happened to come out on the same day, causing a wave of fans to make fun little posts about the games being related. The song was cute for her parts, but Eijiro would take care of the parts that were deeper. Headbanging and laughing together, it was such a fun song for them to do with each other. Mina and Katsuki thought so too, Mina headbanging with them while Bakugo tapped his foot and gave them both a smirk.
"Alright Bakugo, what song do you wanna do with me?" Ochako was still smiling from her song with Eijiro as the blonde shrugged but went to the panel anyway to punch in the song.
"You know the song 'As The World Caves In' right? You seem like you'd know it…"
"Yeah, I like the song, but versions actually." She was a bit surprised that he chose such an emotional song for their duet, but she went along.
Due to certain settings they punched in, the system automatically put words on the screen for each one to sing, blue for Ochako, and red for Katsuki, purple for both. Katsuki started the first verse, he sounded really nice, this wasn't the type of thing that anyone would've expected him to sound like when singing. When the pre-chorus started, Ochako joined in as they sang that and the chorus together, harmonizing with one another. When verse two started, it was only Ochako's part to sing, she looked at him while he looked at the screen waiting for his own part to start again. When it does, he turns to her, singing directly to her at this point.
Neither of them were paying attention to their best friends giving eachother a fist bump, knowing they've probably succeeded in hooking their friends up. One heart broken, the other indifferent, but both having small crushes on each other.
By the end of the song, both Katsuki and Ochako were a bit teary eyed and blushing. Bakugo touched her face a little.
"You've got some dust in your eye Cheeks."
"Same to you Katsuki." She sniffed a little bit before walking out of the bathroom, leaving Bakugo on stage. Mina went after her, concerned for her as she was crying in the bathroom.
Mina consoled her and told her that it was okay to cry and that she's going through a lot. And that she and Bakugo seemed to like each other a little, so instead of crying, she should talk to him about it. Helping her clean up she gave her a pat on the back and a good pep talk. The guys were a bit worried, Kiri knew things would probably work out, but Uraraka crying was NOT part of their master plan. Bakugo kept fidgeting, he didn't think he'd make her cry, he just thought she'd get a bit flustered and could tease her about it. Kirishima told him everything was fine and they'd come back soon. The song is emotional, so it makes sense. He even spilled the beans that Uraraka was somewhat attracted to him, so maybe it was a bit hard hitting since they were so close to graduating from U.A. and probably won't see each other much afterward. Katsuki never considered that and when the girls came back, Mina took Eijiro out for the blond and brunette to talk.
"So I heard you like me, like, like-like." Ochako felt like a child, using the phrase 'like-like' to convey a more than friends kind of like.
"Yeah, I do, I have, for sometime, but you like Deku, so it didn't feel right to tell you." Katsuki looked away and shrugged.
"I do like Deku, but he's focused on being All Might's successor, so it felt wrong. And, I like you in the same way, it's just that I never got the feeling you liked me back."
"Sorry about that, I'm not too good at expressing my feelings, so, yeah. How about I sing a song to convey how I feel, it'll be easier." Katsuki got up and typed in a new song, Ochako gave a soft smile.
He actually looked nervous this time, she recognized the song, it was Space Girl by Frances Forever. He sang this one as nicely as before, and it was fitting since her quirk had to deal with gravity. She blushed and looked at him, singing the song as sweetly as he could for her. He wasn't gonna come out and ask if she'd be his girlfriend after this, just ask her to go on a couple of dates with him to make sure it's not some heat of the moment decision just because of an emotional outburst.
Katsuki was actually glad he came along, he told the girl he liked how he felt, she liked him back. Unbeknownst to them though, Kirishima and Mina were right outside giving each other high fives and jumping around, they did it. They cheered up Ochako, and hopefully she and Katsuki would start dating.
The two entered the room again when they saw Bakugo step down and sit next to Ochako, it was pretty cute. They all finished their dinner and kept the night going with more songs before heading back to the dorms.
Katsuki and Ochako were both still flustered at the fact they both liked each other, but knew it wasn't a big deal because the feeling was mutual. Bakugo suggested they go out more often to get a better feel of what an actual relationship between them would be like. Uraraka agreed because she didn't want to rush things, but she also wanted to establish a relationship before they graduated, so he wouldn't be the one that got away.
