When everyone was finally getting settled in Horseshoe Overlook, they heard from Trelawny. Sean was still alive. Kidnapped and held by mercenaries, but alive. Arthur joined with Charles and Javier to get him back.
"And how is my dear Lily?" Trelawny asked. "Shame I wasn't there to see her."
"Doin' well. Useful, like ya said," Arthur answered.
Lily was in fact quickly being accepted into the gang, pulling her weight more than even some of the veterans. She was so used to being much busier at the circus that her break from chores consisted of stretching and practicing for her routine. Coincidentally, whenever she was on the move, Molly had some important things to say to Dutch, but no amount of words could turn that man's attention from the "beauty of the human body", as he would tell everyone.
But it wasn't only Dutch. Bachelors stared, taken men stared. Some were interested in her talent, but in this camp, filled with stressed out, repressed outlaws, it wasn't just her abilities.
"You didn't doubt me, did you, my boy?" he asked, amused and knowing the answer.
"Next time ya suggest someone, could we get someone less..." he trailed off.
Trelawny let out a boisterous laugh. "Promiscuous? Well, I thought you lot would love that."
"We do!" Javier interrupted. "Arthur appreciates it as much as we do, but he won't admit it. He's around her more than the rest of us."
Arthur froze as Trelawny watched his reaction. "It ain't my fault I gotta look after the new'uns. Don't wanna buncha lazy, no good idiots runnin' 'round."
Javier and Charles stared at him, not convinced, before turning back to watch the mercenaries.
"Oh my, this taken with her, are you?" Trelawny teased. "I certainly can't blame you. The young lady is something else. She acts very sweet, doesn't she?"
Acts? Arthur raised a brow, but Javier drew him back into the mission.
From Blackwater, the mercenaries intended to transfer Sean to a federal prison, according to Trelawny. They had to act then and there. What a lucky boy Sean was to have such a tight-knit group behind him. With some gunfire and a bit of a ruckus, they were able to rescue Sean, and get away.
They arrived back with Sean safe and sound, but instead of celebration, Arthur came back to see Micah making a move on Lily, while she was in the middle of practicing her contorting. And the moment he saw Micah touch her, Arthur hopped off his horse, forgetting about Sean, and stormed over to Micah, snatching his hand off of her. "The lady said ta leave 'er alone."
Seeing his reaction, Micah smirked. "That a lil' envy in your eye, Morgan?"
"O' what? Alls I see is you buggin' this young lady. An' if I see you doin' it again, ya ain't gonna have no hands to do it a third time."
Deciding it wasn't worth it, he retreated, hands up in surrender.
As he sauntered off, Lily sat up normally and smiled up at Arthur. She was happy that he stepped in to help. "Now, unless you have rabbit hearing, you didn't hear me tell Micah to leave me alone."
"Everyone wants Micah ta leave 'em alone." With a grunt, he knelt down to her level. "You alright?"
"I am. Thank you."
"Next time ya wanna practice, lemme know. I'll kick John outta his tent an' let ya use it. An' I'll keep 'em from botherin' ya."
For a moment, Lily stared at him, silently. Arthur always tried to come off as angry and unapproachable, but he was always so kind to everyone at camp. She was lucky that that kindness extended to her. Although, her instincts always cautioned her against kind strangers, she appreciated the time he took to even talk with her.
Thinking he was being scrutinized, Arthur tensed up. "Unless...you want 'em to bother ya...?"
Lily let out a sigh, she knew she had eyes on her. She always did. No matter where she practiced, in the open, in her tent, in the woods, those who wanted to would always sneak a peek. It was just how things were. No matter how uncomfortable they made it sometimes. But it was a sweet gesture from Arthur. Her smile widened. "You're too good to me, Mr. Morgan."
"Just doin' what anyone'd do."
"You think Micah would do what you did?"
"Well, Miss Lee, Micah's a slimy creature."
She put a hand on his arm and gave him a squeeze. He dismissed her with a grunt, but that simple gesture seemed to sink in, and he wasn't sure what to do or say.
"Oi, Morgan!" With Charles' help, Sean hobbled over. "Care more 'bout the newest than ye do about me? Now that stings."
"Yer mouth's workin' fine," Arthur remarked. "Must mean ya ain't as hurt as ya could be."
"Lass, ye see how he treats me?" Sean whined. "He ain't gonna treat ye any better either. Ye should just stick with me. I'll show ye how things're done 'ere."
"Sure, just had ta save your ass, but go right ahead an' show Miss Lee the ropes."
"Ahhh, don't hog the lass, English. She belongs ta all o' us."
Arthur sighed, rolling his head. "Fool almost died, an' he's back ta botherin' women."
"Oh, he's not bothering me," Lily laughed. "He's rather charming."
"Now this is a lady with good tastes." Sean nudged Charles playfully, who rolled his eyes and took that as a cue to haul him off the bug Miss Grimshaw for a quick patch up. "If ye ever need somethin' ta do, I'm never too busy for a pretty face!" he called out as he was being dragged away.
Arthur let out a exasperated grunt as Lily giggled. "I'm glad ya find him entertain', Miss Lee."
"I expected worse the way you described him, and you thought he was dead."
"I stand by it. He's a pain in my ass." Arthur by no means hated the boy, but he sure had a cocky attitude for as green as he was. Kids like him never lasted long, and considering how long experienced outlaws lasted, it was gonna come sooner than later.
Part of him thought that way about Lily too. The girl was a good thief and con-artist, but she was cocky and liked playing with fire. A combination that would make her life as an outlaw short. Arthur hated to think about it. The gang already lost enough. Even though she was a new addition, she was a welcomed one.
Arthur watched Lily happily join the celebration as the liquor was being passed around and music was being played. She forego the liquor but happily provided entertainment as if she did drink. She pulled onlookers into her wild dance and showed off her acrobatic feats.
Jack was amazed at the simpler things and wanted her to show him how to walk on her hands. She happily obliged and did circles around Jack and John, as Jack tried to do the same, managing to only do some clumsy rolls. Somehow she goaded John into it, and he made it onto his hands but didn't dare to disturb the shaky balance he had going.
"How're ya doing that?" John let himself fall.
"Practice~!" She put a hand behind her back and began to push herself up and down with one hand, before bending herself back onto her feet. "But really, anyone with a lot of strength should be able to do it. I guess you just ain't that strong, John~" she teased.
"You sayin' I'm weak, Miss Lily?"
"Of course not! But seeing as weak lil' ol' me can do it, and you can't..." she trailed off. "Maybe it's a matter of diet. I could get you the same stuff I eat, for a price."
John stared at her. Not even he would fall for that. "You sure we hired ya as a conman?"
Lily giggled and started to happily shuffle away. "Just thought I'd try."
She didn't get anywhere before she was bumped into by Dutch who swiftly took a satchel off of her and held it up. He grinned down at her. "My dear. While I appreciate you keeping my boys on their toes..."
"Aw, Dutch, you don't know that's his."
"I can only guess. John, check your pockets."
John did what he was told and reached into his pockets. He pulled out a pouch similar to the one Lily had. He looked into it, but instead of the money he had before, there were pebbles and some paper with crudely drawn faces on them. The pouch, he noticed, also wasn't his. "I still don't understand how ya do this..."
"Practice~," she sang.
Dutch chuckled and threw John his belongings. He also grabbed onto Lily's arm before she could disappear. "Miss Lee, we've talked about this."
"Aw, Dutch, it would've just gone back to him anyways. I can't steal if it's for the camp's sake. We're working together."
"Tell it to the judge, my dear. We're gonna have a looooong talk about this."
Arthur watched the whole thing. He knew there was some underlining message behind that "talk" he wanted to have with her. He could only imagine what they were off to do, while everyone else was distracted with the partying. It was more than obvious to him that this wasn't Lily's first time getting into trouble with Dutch. She got into trouble with a handful of the group already. With Sean's invitation, he was probably next in line after she and Dutch were done for the day.
Arthur thought for a moment about propositioning her. It'd be nothing other than a man with needs and a woman who could fulfill that. Still, his hands sweat thinking about it. Whenever she touched him, a simple platonic gesture, he could feel himself clamming up. And what if she refused. He wouldn't be shocked. He knew he was better than Micah, but would he be to her? What if money wasn't enough to sway her?
Arthur got up. Time to shut those thoughts up. He joined in on the group, and took the liquor Charles offered him as he sat down. He wasn't sure if Charles meant to offer him the whole thing or a just a sip, but Arthur drank the whole thing anyways.
Lily had every reason to reject him, even with money. He was a sad excuse.
Obviously the half bottle wasn't enough. "Might as well get rid o' these fellers too." From his satchel, he took out another bottle of liquor, throwing that back as well. That man sure went hard, when presented with the opportunity.
"You okay, Arthur?" Charles asked.
"Celebratin'," he replied flatly.
"Doesn't seem like it." He watched Arthur bite the top off another bottle and take a long drink straight out of it. "Just...take it easy."
Arthur paused to take a breath, when the bottle was half emptied. "S'what this's for," he said, and then downed the rest of it.
Now his thoughts were muddled enough to celebrate.
The celebration was still going on when Lily came back out of Dutch's tent a while later. It was in full swing now. Everyone was hollering and laughing, singing to the tune of Javier's guitar and Uncle's surprisingly coherent drunk banjo.
"Oh shit, Arthur's had a drink!" Lenny laughed loudly, alerting the camp.
Left and right, Arthur was babbling at anyone he bumped into, stumbling around camp. The insults that came out of his mouth in that state were cutting, the worst of them thrown at Micah and Uncle. But most took it in stride and had a good time listening to him hurling insults.
"MI' LIーLY!" Arthur called out to her from across camp, making his way to her.
Lily braced herself as Arthur stumbled against her. "Oh hello, Arthur!"
"My GOD, yer so pretty! Has anyone told ya that?" He didn't let her answer. "Of course they have! Bet men love screamin' 'bout how pretty ya are when yer on ya knees! Did Dutch told ya how pretty ya are? Bet he wants to."
"Yes, yes, I'm loose and lewd. Let's sit you down, Mr. Morgan. You'll get dizzy if you keep spinning around insulting people."
Arthur held onto her with a firm grip for a drunk. Even when she tried to slip away he held on tightly, laughing hoarsely. He let out a low burp and hocked his spit on the ground. Letting out another cackle he managed to tangle his feet with hers. He tripped and fell over, sending up a small cloud of dirt as he hit the ground.
Lily leaned over. "Are you...alright?"
"You tripped me, Miss Lily!" he accused her, but a wide grin spread on his face. He grabbed her arm and pulled her on top of him. "You ain't gonna win that easily!"
"Win what?!" she giggled as she struggled against Arthur's grip.
He never answered and just held her tightly. The rest of the camp laughed at the new victim of Arthur's drunkenness, but soon went back to their party.
"Alright, Mr. Morganー" she tried to get up, but found herself locked in place. "Uh, Mr. Morgan?" A loud rumbling sound came from his throat. He passed out. Lily sighed, exasperated but amused. She folded her arms on his chest and relaxed for a moment. "Well, I can think of worse places to spend the night."
Though she didn't have to stay on top of him for long. Eventually, Charles and Abigail came over to free her.
"Mary Beth said to leave you, but I figured you'd want the help," Abigail said, though she waited for an answer.
Lily smiled. "I don't think my body would like me very much if I slept like this." With Charles' help, they pried Arthur's arms away and Lily slipped out. She brushed herself off and fixed her clothes. "Well, he must be happy that Sean's back."
"We've lost a lot of people lately," Abigail said somberly. "Sean coming back was a relief for all of us. Don't hold it against him."
Charles stayed quiet. He knew that wasn't the reason why Arthur was drinking, but he wasn't sure why he was. Arthur was upset when he downed all those bottles.
