Warnings of violence, very light gore, and the occasional curse
Oh yeah and I don't own shit
With a grunt, Jason flipped the robot over his shoulder landing with a thud and no doubt leaving a dent.
Turning his body he threw two birdarangs at the robot coming behind him, one hit its left shoulder and the other its right knee both going through it effortlessly as the robot dropped to one knee with the other one being useless.
Bringing his fist down to the robot's skull-like head he winced as a ragged piece of metal caught on his glove leaving a trail of blood dripping to his fingers and staining the steel.
Pulling his right hand next to his body Jason let out a hiss at the pain. Looking at it he couldn't help but notice the ever so slightly crimson color of blood as it hit the black and red of the robin suit staining it.
'Bats is gonna kill me for this,' he thought with a groan at the up-and-coming lecture.
'I could go for two excuses here; I could say I got nicked during a solo patrol, but he would get angry and have me not patrol or leave his eyesight for lords know how long, or I could tell the truth and get suspended for a few days.'
Already knowing the answer he was going to choose Jason turned around one more time to look at the final robot. Said robot was dragging its body behind him with his left arm doing all the work and its body letting the oil soak the floor wherever it was dragged like a snail and the slime it left behind.
Rolling his eyes He jumped towards the robot and with a flick of his ankle turned his body around with his leg outstretched performing a roundhouse kick to its neck, apparently with enough force and the right angle to kick its head straight off its body and hitting the wall with a loud echo.
"Goal," Jason said to myself not bothering to fight the grin that slid to his face at the show of force.
"With a kick like that, you could join the soccer league," A feminine voice said behind Jason "Or is it the soccer association? I never watched soccer."
Turning around his eyes met the one person on the team that he liked, Artemis.
Despite Dick being Nightwing and not Robin anymore everyone still compared Jason to him, with him being the Better Robin and Jason being the Lesser Robin as a result.
Everything he did they would ridicule him on, the way Jason talked, Dick was smoother, the fact he cursed more, Dick didn't have such a potty mouth. But it came in full with the way Jason fought, Dick was graceful and fast being able to duck and bounce as freely as it looked. While Jason fought with no such grace instead using brute force with little movement between each attack.
This of course raised many eyebrows but he didn't care, or at least at first.
But then the team started to not even give him the benefit of the doubt, some were more subtle, like Megan and Conner who would slump their shoulders at being paired with Jason and only him on missions. Kaldur, Rocket, and Zatanna just didn't ask for my opinion on matters of missions or training.
But the worst by far is Kid Flash and Nightwing, to Nightwing, Jason was nothing more than a replacement, something faulty compared to the original that could and would never compare. Jason, sure he hates Batman more than me Jason and is just taking it out on him, and to some extent, He could understand but with what he has said to him Jason just couldn't forgive that.
And Wally only hated Jason for the reason that Nightwing is his best friend, well that and the fact he thinks he's stealing his girl from him.
That leads him to Artemis, the one person who is nice to Jason. This caused them to get close to the point of having sleepovers and all-nighters just filled with watching movies and laughing. She is the closest thing he had to a sister and despite what Wally thinks he doesn't have any feelings for her that involve romantic affection.
That brings us back to the present with Artemis grinning at Jason and Jason grinning at her trying to hide his hurting hand away from her eyesight.
"All jokes aside I saw that kick, pretty cool but the amount of time you used to wind it up could have made it obvious for others to see what you were doing and hurt you," She advised while walking away from Jason to the kitchen.
Nodding at this information Jason shifted his hand again to keep it out of view and despite the hurt, it was working.
"I'm free tomorrow and Wally has class so we could finish the Pirates of the Caribbean movies if your free," she said turning back to him with a grin.
"Sure, I'll bring my rocking personality and you bring everything else," Jason said with a grin relishing her laugh at his joke.
Waving goodbye she was about to turn before her gaze turned to right behind Jason her smile turned into a frown and the amusement left her eyes with concern taking up the task of filling in.
"Jason, why is there blood dripping behind your back?" She said in an eerily calm voice with the words matching the steps she was taking towards him.
Rearing his head behind him Jason could see she was right, the arm had blood falling from it, one already on the ground and two more about to fall with it.
"One of the robots nicked me, that's all nothing I can't handle," Jason said with a forced cocky smile on his face to attempt to soothe her worries.
But guessing with the fact that when Jason said "nicked" she started running it was a failed attempt. Grabbing his tucked arm forcefully elicited a wince from Jason. When he saw her narrow her eyes at his wound Jason knew he was in trouble, cause while Artemis is fun she is ten times more dangerous and it is fucking terrifying when she is mad.
"Jason, how did you get this?" She asked with forced calmness without looking up from the wound.
"I punched a robot and one of the parts caught onto my suit, that's all," Jason said trying to downplay it.
"How long have you been training for?"
"What how does that have to do-" Jason was about to finish that statement when she glared at him with enough force to make Jason shit his pants.
"2 hours,"JasonI lied
"Jason," She growled out knowing of my lie
"Ok, 6 hours," He said with a mumble
"Jason Todd!" she yelled before forcefully dragging Jason to the med room.
Entering the medbay Artemis pushed him into the bed than not wasting a beat began to look for various items.
There was an uncomfortable silence that followed soon after with the shuffle of drawers being the only sound that he could hear, a silence that even Jason who normally loves silence was beginning to grow tired of it.
"So… where did the rest of the team go?" Jason couldn't help but ask.
"Beach party, didn't you know?" she asked still not looking back.
"No why who was supposed to tell me?"
"Nightwi-" she was about to say before cutting herself with a growl before saying "Dick!"
"Dick as in the namecalling or the name?" Jason said growing tired of the idea of him not hanging out with the team.
"Both,"
Jason couldn't help but laugh at this comment and seeing Artemis's smile he knew she felt the same.
"Why?"
Jason stopped laughing to look at her in confusion, "Why what, it was a funny joke,"
"Why did you train for 6 hours?" She asked
"Oh," Jason muttered trying to think of yet another lie to help him. But one look from Artemis and the lie didn't seem worth it.
"I was trying to make myself worth it in the team's eyes," He muttered
"What?" She said not hearing him even after she started to work on his arm.
"I was trying to make myself worth it in the team's eyes," Jason said louder
She looked up from whatever task she was doing with a confused look to boot, "What of course you're worth it Jason."
"To the team I'm not, to Batman and the league im not worth it. They all hate me despise me especially Dick. At first I looked up to DIck for being the first Robin the person I was supposed to help while on missions." Jason said before turning away knowing about how his eyes were beginning to water and crying now would make Artemis think he was weak.
So turning away he resumed his tale; "But he didn't see it like I did he was mad and both me and Bats to him I was nothing but a replacement, a brute rather than a acrobat. He would tell Bruce about how he should send me back to the streets and how he was always gonna be Robin. The worst part is after one mission where I broke a gunmans collarbone he began to consider it!"
By now Jason was in open tears with the later half of his statement becoming a jumbled mess or words tears and hiccups all that led to a cacophony of ugly sounding noise that would make anyone hearing cringe.
"When I joined the team I thought it would become better that me and Dick would bond over Bats being an asshole but he wouldn't back down on his position of me and the team backed him up and both began to hate me."
"Bats knew this, he must've but he didn't care he didn't stop them none of the heroes stopped them just avoiding their gaze to make themselves feel better. So don't you see Artemis I have to train to become better and to make them like me because without this suit I'm nothing but the same small boy on the streets! I'll lose the brute style of fighting I'll lose the bad mouth please I just want Dick to love me!"
Screaming out the last part Jason's body rocked by the force of the tears that were freely flowing down his cheeks, Jason don't remember when Artemis hugged him and he sure as hell can't remember what she said but Jason didn't care.
He doesn't remember how long they stayed there, Artemis rocking Jasons body as she hugged him as he cried. Maybe it was 10 minutes or maybe half a day Jason couldn't tell and he didn't want it to end.
But all good things must come to an end. And when Artmeis pulled away from Jason he would lie and tell you he didn't whine but it is after all a lie.
"Jason," Artemis began with a soft voice something that sounded too good and pure to be heard right after his sobs, something divine to something demonic. "Listen to me right now. You are worth it and if Dick can't see it than fuck him. Being Robin is a title not a person and you can mold that title into what ever you want and Dick doesn't have a say in that and Wally espically doesn't have one either.
If you have to work yourself into blood and tears just for some respect let alone love than the person doesn't deserve yours. You are your own man a man I like to hang out with and fight alongside something I don't do with Dick, you're your own man so screw what they think and make yourself who you want to be while the rest look on in envy." She finished while stroking my hair before going back to Jason's arm, now wet with tears and blood mixing together to make a smoothie like color.
Without mentioning how he cried like a baby or worked myself into a sweat and was back to fixing his arm and Jason was thankful.
Thankfully for Jason there was a tissue box already next to him sitting on the bed one already opened with a tissue half out like a hair sticking out.
If people walked in they would see a concentrated and mildly pissed off Artemis working on a flustered and red eyed Jason picking at his eyes with tissues with a speed that would make Flash flustered.
"That's it," Artemis said while standing up dusting her hands like she was a mechanic after finishing a fix up looking at her handy work a look that Jason's mom would make when she was done with her pancakes when Jason would get sick a little tradition between the two that made Jason ache thinking about.
"But no more 6 hour training sessions ok." Artemis said while making it well known that it wasn't a question but rather an order.
Putting a brave face on despite her comforting him a minute earlier and nodded with a smile that they both knew was fake.
"Good, now wait here while I grab my purse, were gonna go out to eat cause lord knows you need it." She said before walking out to grab said purse.
The date if you could even call it was nice nothing knew but nice and surprisingly quiet which was rare when you parred together but it was nice and for Jason and his mind something needed.
After all if he was gonna become his own man he would have to become his 'own man' and 'screw what they think and make yourself who you want to be while the rest look on in envy.'
With that in mind Jason felt like he could take on the world, and he was going to wether Bats or Dick wanted him too.
A week after their talk Jason would find out his mom was alive.
2 days after that he would disappear to try and look for her.
3 days after he left the team got news of his death.
2 weeks after their talk the team began to fall apart and the team began to blame themselves.
