I don't own history. (I don't know French so for the first thing Thomas says to Angelica just pretend it's French. Set in historical times.)
It was a cloudy day in Paris France. Angelica Schuyler was walking briskly down a Paris street. She was just divorced, not that she was complaining. She had lived a loveless marriage in London for one year too long. She moved to France to get a new start. And boy would she get one.
Thomas Jefferson was going for a walk in the streets of Paris France. His study was getting very stuffy and hot so he decided to get some fresh air. Thomas decided to get a paper for news on America. From what he had heard the revolution was still going on but might be ending sometime in the near future. When or if it did end he would be going home to Virginia as his use in France would be over. He couldn't wait to go home to his estate, Monticello. Eventually he found a shop that had some newspapers. It was a book store and printing shop.
Angelica had stopped in book shop to look around. She liked reading and knew her sister Eliza did too. She was going to get a book for herself and for Eliza. Angelica found a book of fairy tales for Eliza since she knew Eliza loved fairy tales and had a collection of them. She was looking at a book of poetry for herself when someone bumped into her. She dropped the books.
"Oh sorry mademoiselle", Thomas said to Angelica, though he didn't know it.
"I speak English monsieur", Angelica told him bending over to pick up the books. Thomas went to pick them up too. They each got one book.
"Do you have a child?" Thomas asked handing the fairy tales back to Angelica.
"No but my sister is with child and she loves fairy tales", Angelica said taking the book. "I remember when we were little she spent all of her time looking for fairies. She even made a small house for them out of a box"
"And is the poetry for yourself?" Thomas motioned to the other book in her hands.
"Yes. What are you here for Mr.", Angelica trailed off not knowing his name.
"Jefferson. Thomas Jefferson", Thomas said.
"Well then what are you here for Mr. Jefferson?"
"Just the paper"
"Of course. Well I'll see you around Mr. Jefferson", Angelica said going over to pay. Thomas watched as she pulled out, counted the coins, and gave them to the clerk. He nodded and she left. Thomas grabbed his paper and just tossed some coins at the clerk.
"Keep the change", Thomas said as he rushed out the door. He caught up with Angelica. "Mademoiselle?"
Angelica jumped. "Mr. Jefferson! I see you got your paper"
"Er yes I did." Why did he feel so awkward around her? "I um didn't catch your name"
"Angelica Schuyler" Wow. Angelica Schuyler. A beautiful name for a beautiful lady. She smelled nice too. Thomas mentally slapped himself. He would probably never see this lady again. But getting off of the boat to America with her on his arm would be nice. Her in a nice gown and him with his cane walking down the-
"-fferson! Mr. Jefferson are you listening?"
"I'm sorry what?"
"I was just saying that it's a wonderful day for a walk. Not to cold but not to warm"
"Of course Miss Schuyler", Thomas said. He wanted the ground to open up and swallow him. Why was he acting like this? He just couldn't understand it. Little did he know Angelica was feeling the same way. She was fighting down a blush like the soldiers fighting the revolution. Except this time the "redcoats" on her cheeks were winning. Angelica was beginning to regret not putting on powder this morning.
Thomas, remembering how to be a gentleman, offered Angelica his arm. To his delight she took.
"Would you like me to take you home?" he asked.
"I would like that, thank you. We need to turn around though because my house is the other way"
"Alright then" The pair pivoted and walked in the other direction.
"This is my first time in Paris", Angelica commented.
"Really? Why have you come?" Thomas asked. Angelica hesitated. "You can tell me Miss Schuyler"
"A divorce. I wanted a fresh start", Angelica said avoiding eye contact. "I know divorces are looked down upon. I can find my way home on my own" She tried to disentangle herself from his arm but Thomas put a hand on her's.
"I will never look down on you just because you are divorced", he used a gloved hand to turn her face to look at him. "Which one is yours?" He gestured to the row of houses. Angelica hadn't noticed that they had found her neighborhood.
"This one", she said. "Thank you for walking me home Mr. Jefferson"
"Any time Miss Schuyler"
When Thomas got home one of his slaves Sally met him. She noticed something different.
"Mr Jefferson sir. Is something wrong. Did something good happen?"
"I think I'm in love Sally" he said. And with that he walked off to his study.
