AN: A short tribute to Mars.
Rei dreamt of shadows. Long darkness, and an empty world of blackness.
He was nowhere.
So he walked. He walked as he saw Kira standing in front of him, somewhere just in reach.
Behind him, in the distance Rei heard cries. Desperate pleas.
"Come back, Rei. Come back to us."
He could hear his brother, his mother, everyone. Calling to him, but Rei didn't look back.
In front of him stood Kira, in a starry sky.
His dearest Kira. Her hair long and her delicate frame, beautifully lit in starlight. He reached for her, hearing the gentle murmurs of this family behind him, but he wasn't scared. Kira accepted his hand, holding him tightly, as he kept her covered in glittering stardust.

Gently slumbering by Kira's side, Rei laid. His eyes shut, with his flaxen hair delicately framing his pale face. Kira watched him, as he slowly breathed in and out, his body rising and falling. She couldn't stop her heart from overflowing with love. His arms around her kept her safe.
The sun slowly filtered through a window somewhere, falling gingerly on their skin, warming them.
Rei roused from his sleep, a soft murmur escaping his lips. His amber eyes fell onto Kira, as she felt heat rush to her face.
"Mornin'," Rei said.
"Morning," Kira smiled."Did you sleep well?"
Rei thought for a second, almost lost in deep thought, then said,"I'm better now that I'm awake with you."
Kira's heart was pounding, as she pressed herself into his chest, letting his heartbeat overflow into her ears. Letting something deep inside her shine, as if Rei and her had turned into stardust, brighter than the sun.
"I love you," Kira said softly, so low she could barely make it out.
But somehow Rei heard her and replied.
"I love you too,"Rei said, his voice warm.
Though maybe... just maybe...
They were already stardust.
AN: I started rereading some of Mars, and remembering how GOOD it was, and felt extremely compelled to write a drabble as a tribute to it, Rei and Kira. Honestly such a beautiful series. I'm so sad no one knows this series, it's such a classic shoujo manga. This fic was also partly inspired by a music video I saw with 'Boats and Birds' by Gregory and the Hawk to Mars. I also took heavy inspiration from the scene in the final volume when Rei was in the hospital fighting for this life where he saw his brother and Kira.
