Chapter Six: A Disaster

"Where are you going, Maria?" a hatefully familiar voice said.

"Maman, I go by Ava. Not Maria." Ava grabbed her bag and stopped at the door. "I got a date. I hope you're happy now."

"Good girl, who are you going out with?" her mother asked.

Ava was out the door before she could answer. She sighed as she walked to the park. Things with her mother were tough. And she wasn't going to tell her she was going on a date with a superhero. Her mom would say it was just pity. And Ava agreed with her. She saw Prince Noire sitting on a bridge and walked up to him.

"Hey, Prince Noire," Ava said approaching him. Prince snapped out of the trance he was in looking at the stars. He scrambled to his feet and handed Ava a rose.

"I thought a rose would be a good idea-" Prince said. Ava smiled at the rose graciously and looked at the river under the bridge.

"Hey, I just wanted to thank you for saying yes," Ava said. "I'm only doing this because I have to- I don't want to disappoint my mom." Noire let his green eyes balance on the water.

"Oh."

Ava looked at him. "It's not like I have anything against you- just if anyone found out about something I've been keeping a secret for a while- I don't know how I would take it. And I wouldn't keep that from someone I'm dating."

"I can keep a secret," Noire promised.

Ava's face darkened. "I'm sure you can. You're a superhero, aren't you?" Noire nodded. "You have to promise not to tell anyon- What am I doing?" Ava practically kicked herself. She shook her head.

"Ava-" Noire started but was cut off.

"I have to go." Ava sprinted away, tears in her eyes. She ran into an alleyway and sunk down against a wall. Tikki flew out of her purse.

"Are you okay, Ava?" Tikki asked.

"I can't handle this Tikki. I'm not supposed to be anything more than a girl with my drama I'm handling, and now I'm a superhero. Not to mention NOTHING is going right with me and Maman. I'm so over being the perfect teenage girl!" Ava got up and walked into the open. A purple butterfly flew into her purse and a mask appeared over her face.

"A secret you don't want displaced? Trust you can never give? I can make it so everyone feels your pain. Just-"

Noire was looking for her, and to see that Ava had a mask on her face scared him. But what happened next surprised both him and Papillion. Ava burst out laughing.

"Papillion- I like your optimism in choosing me, but I gotta tell you, I don't want anyone to feel the pain I have felt because every one of them would be in tears. Now, how about you take your sweet little butterfly and pick on someone else?" Instead of waiting for a response, Ava took the bag off and threw it to the ground. The purple butterfly flew out and changed white. "Bye bye, little butterfly." In mock, she threw her bag up and said, "MIRACULOUS LADYBUG!" Just before catching it. She then walked away like nothing had happened. The girl pulled her emotions in with no reaction.

Noire would never look at the girl the same.
