''Off with their heads!''
In the haunting dungeons of the infamous Salazen Grum, one of the castle's most noticeable prisoners couldn't get her eyes shut during the night because of these sealing words. Melisandre of Azura, also known as The Blue Queen, the second youngest sister of the Red Queen and duchess of the decaying Blue Kingdom, was just hours away from her dreaded demise. Stuck in the dungeous with her was her youngest son, Prince Milo of Azurra. The queen had light skin, which was not as lighter as her youngest sister, Mirana of Marmoreal, dark black hair, turquoise blue eyes and was usually wearing elegant and chic blue dresses. Her son was just like her. But now they were dressed as the stereotypical prisinours of the Red Castle. The Blue Queen was trying to calm her child down by whispering quietly to him and petting his soft hair.
''Mommy...am I going to die?" asked the young prince.
''No, honey. You won't. No matter what happens, I will not let them hurt you.'' said the caring mother, still blaming herself for putting her kingdom and her children, yes, her children, through this unfortunate situation.
Besides Milo, the queen had another son. 17 year old Prince Ragheal II, named after his late grandfather, King Ragheal I. The father of both boys was King Engel of Azzura, who died in battle shortly before Milo was born. Melisandre was a long and strong ally to the White Queen and had some of the strongest knights in all of the Underworld. After the death of King Engel, she had to raise both her boys alone. Milo was now 6 years old. But since the death of his father, Ragheal became an extremely different person. The once loyal, responsable prince became volatile, spoiled, ambitious and extremely jealous of his younger sibling. The fact that the Queen was focusing her attention more on her younger son made matters even worse. By the time he turned 15, he had one great goal. Become the new king of Azzura. And soon. He wanted to honour his father and have the dreamy spotlights that he always wanted to have. He just wanted to have his mother's approval, but she was so overwhelmed by being a single mother and the leading ruler of a big kingdom that she just forgot about Raeghal.
As years went on and the rage of the Red Queen fastly grew, she had started one long and bloody battle against Azzura and Marmoreal and a brutal takeover on the underwold. Her first main focus was on her middle sister's empire, since it was by far the strongest. Raeghal saw this as a chance to become the king of Azzura and secretly teamed up with his evil aunt so he could take Melisandre and Milo out of his way and become the king. But the Red Queen only accepted their alliance under one circumstance. The Azzura would have to become allies of the Red Kingdom after he was crowded. Thirsty for power, Raeghal accepted her demands.
After months of continuous attacks, with the help of the tyranny of her older son, the Blue Queen and Prince Milo were captured and brought to Salazen Grum to be killed. With his family out of the way, Raeghal was one step closer to becoming the king he always wanted to be. Even if it was an evil king. For him, Milo was nothing more than a burden. An intruder. And getting rid of his brother would mean that he wouldn't have to fight with him for the throne. Milo was loved by all of the Blue Kingdom. He was light hearted, selfless, strong, smart and brave. Just like his father. In Azzura, whenever there was the need for the election of a new ruler, if the Majesties had two or more children, the people would have to decide on which sibling should be their new king or queen. Despite being the oldest, Raeghal new that Milo had the sympathy of all the inhabitants of his homeland, making him the favorite child in the Royal Family. Sure, he knew that if his brother was ever going to become the king, it would be far into the future due to his young age. However, he would then have to dispute the throne with his sibling. And if things ever got to that point, he knew he would lose. However, if there was no sibling, then there was no need for voting and he would automatically be crowned as the new leader of Azzura. With the imminent deaths of his brother and his mother, Raeghal was one step closer to his goals.
After a few minutes of comforting her son, some of the Armored Cards of the castle went to get Milo and Melisandre for the Red Queen's notorious morning executions. As soon as the red knights unlocked the cell doors, the prince hid behind his mother.
''Please, it could be just me. I do anything you want. But please, don't hurt my son!" begged Melisandre before being grabbed by the card knights.
''We are very sorry, ma'am. But you are not at home here. You are in no position to make demands.'' said one of the minions.
Milo even tried to get away from them, only to be grabbed by one of the red cards and led outside with his mom. ''Let me go, please! Someone help us! I don't wanna die! Please!'' cried the prince as he and his mother were dragged across the dungeon.
After a few minutes, they reached the Execution Yard, one of Iracebeth's favorite places in the castle. The ground was all made of stone and it was surrounded by the tall and grey walls of the building. It had a space for a crowd to watch the executions and a heart shaped altar in the center where the victims had their heads cut off. The members of the red kingdom highly anticipated the executions of the members of the royal blue family across, so there was a quite high attendance for the event.
The all powerful and implacable red queen was standing at a balcony in one of the towers with some of her court people to attend their ruler's favorite morning show. The Red Queen's appearance was nothing out of what everyone was accustomed too. Vividly red hair, a golden crowd on her head, an elegant and high class dark yellow, black and red dress. Hearts were printed all over her clothing. On her feet, ruby red hills. As for her makeup, she opted for a dark red lipstick and a big blue eyeshadow over both of her eyes. Her lover, Stayne, was unable to watch that morning's execution due to some patrolling he had to do around the castle with the card knights. However, to the queen's left side was someone that the Blue Kingdom once cheered for, but now was ashamed of. Someone that Milo wished cared about him. Someone that made Melisandre look at her past and ask herself ''what did I do wrong?''. Prince Rhaegal had blue eyes like the rest of his family. He had medium sized blonde hair, was all built up in muscles and had a scar on his right cheek which he got in a fall he had when he was a child. He was dressed in somber and simple black clothing and had an emerald ring on his right index finger which was given to him as a gift by the red queen. The red court members all gasped in excitement when mother and son emerged from the tunnels.
''Oh, here they are! Thought they were not going to be in time. I hate when people are late! You do?" asked the evil queen.
''Absolutely.'' said Rhaegal after a malicious and excited sigh. The other court members agreed with the queen as well.
Irasebeth would then look with a smile at her oldest nephew with proud and ambitious eyes. ''Your time is arriving, my dear. Soon you'll be a king.'' she said. Rhaegal replied with a simple and formal nod as he was trying to pay attention to the suffering of the family he came to hate.
Meanwhile on the ground, Melisandre and Milo were all led to the execution altar. The prince was standing behind his mom while being guarded by two knights. The Blue Queen took a deep breath as she saw all of her life flashing before her eyes in a split second. Every hurt, every moment, every love, every loss. It all came back to her in what she knew was one last time. With a feeling of desperation to keep Milo safe, she looked at Rhaegal with angry and vengeful eyes. She always tried to make sure that he was always on the line. She knew that sometimes she focused more on Milo, but she never neglected Rhaegal. She loved him. She raised him. And this is how he was thanking her? Watching her get her head chopped off so he could become a king to satisfy his sadistic wishes? Milo really loved his mom, but sometimes he missed having some sort of father-like figure in his life. He would always try to get closer to his big brother, but he never cared about him. He sometimes felt a bit lonely and wished he could have a better brother. One that played with him, spent time with him, snuggled with him, took care of him, protected him, loved him. One that didn't make fun of him. One that didn't call him an intruder or a shame to the family.
''Mom…'' muttered the young prince under his breath as Melisandre laid her head on the decapitation block. A man dressed like a grim reaper who was carrying an axe was standing beside her. The red queen smiled as he prepared to make one final sarcastic joke with her sister.
''So, Melisandre. Any last words?" asked her with an evil smile.
Melisandre braced herself. If these were her final words, she had some truths that she'd like to say.
''Iracebeth...you can kill me. You might can me. But you will never defeat me. You will never defeat the Azura. Our people are strong. They are smart, brave and capable.'' she said before making a pause. ''Rhaegal...why? Just...why? I love you. I know I made mistakes but…what I can tell you is that you shouldn't think you'll get the throne and come up unpunished. And also, you people can do whatever you want with me, but you leave my child alone.'' she finished as she looked back at Milo.
The red queen and Rhaegel looked at each other before starting to laugh in an ironic and sarcastic tone.
''Oh, Sissy! Even in the face of death, you are still good for a laugh!'' teased Iracebeth. ''Don't worry! I'll take good care of your boys!"
''Milo, mommy loves you.'' said Melisandre
''No, mom! Please stop it! Let us go!" cried the boy as he fell to his knees in agony, much to Rhaegal's delight.
''You are going to be okay…'' added the blue queen before closing her eyes.
The yard was all silent. The only noise that echoed through the walls of the castle were the desperate cries of Milo begging for his mother's life. The knights held him tightly as the reaper plunged the axed on the queen's neck, beheading her. Her head tumbling through the yard and her body falling lifelessly on the ground.
''NO!" screamed Milo in tears as he saw the head of his mother in the ground. The red queen smiled and Rhaegal let out an evil grin.
''Get him back in the cells! I'll decide what to do with him later.'' ordered the Red Queen. Just as she said that, the knights started to drag the young prince back to his cell. Milo managed to get a glimpse of his older brother and furiously yelled ''Why did you do this to us!?" before being escorted through the hallways.
A little bit surprised by the actions of his aunt, Rhaegal looked at the majesty to ask her a question. But just as he was about to open his lips to let some words out, she practically guessed what he was about to say.
''I know you are going to ask why didn't I just slayed him right now. You said you wanted him to suffer, didn't you?" asked the queen
''Yes, majesty'', replied Rhaegal.
''So lets let him alive for a little more so he can go through every possible pain you want to inflict him.''
Raeghal smiled evilly at his aunt. He was one step closer to the throne now. It doesn't matter how, it doesn't matter when. What matters is that now he was just a few steps away from becoming the king of Azura.
