DM Happy Birthday Lucy Chapter 1

[This takes place between Despicable Me 2 and Despicable Me 3 before Dru and Lucky came along]

It was early morning at Gru's house. But today was a special day, it was Lucy's birthday and Gru had a plan. He went to wake the girls, ''Good morning, girls'' he said, ''Rise and shine, it's your mom's birthday today, remember?''. "How old is Mom today, Dad?" asked Margo. Gru gestured Margo closer and whispered in her ear, "36". Margo gasped loudly, "Really? Is she getting….." she started to say but Gru cut her off. "No, no, no, no! Honey, we're all a very young in this family. Except for Dr. Nefario and my mom. Your mom's very young even in her late thirties. I'm only 57 years old," he said. "What does Mom want for her birthday?" asked Edith. ''Well firstly, have you girls got your presents ready for her?'' Gru said. ''Yes Dad'' chorused the girls. Margo was giving Lucy a box of chocolates that was shaped like a heart.

Edith was giving her some perfume and bath bombs. Agnes was giving her a pretty necklace. But Gru had something special of his own for Lucy. ''Listen girls'' said Gru, ''I've got a plan. Let's act like eet's a normal day and surprise your mom with a party dis afternoon''. ''You mean pretend it isn't Mom's birthday even though it really is?'' asked Edith. ''Yes'' said Gru. ''But won't Mom be disappointed if we don't wish her a happy birthday?'' asked Margo.

''We'll wish her a happy birthday later at the party'' said Gru. The girls liked this idea. ''I'm gonna bake her a cake'' said Gru. ''And decorate the house?!'' piped up Agnes. ''Yes'' said Gru, ''The minions can do dat''. ''And get loads of yummy party food to eat!'' laughed Margo. ''But remember, not a word to your mom about dis until the party'' said Gru, ''Or eet'll spoil de surprise, understand?''. The girls nodded. Meanwhile, Lucy had woken up, she began to stretch as her bare belly stuck out her shirt. After stretching, she was just getting dressed. "It's my birthday today! At long last! I'm 35 no more!" she said. She went downstairs to join her family for breakfast. ''Mornin' everyone'' said Lucy, cheerfully. ''Mornin' Mom'' said the girls in unison as they jumped up to her.

"OGH!" grunted Lucy as she landed on her buttocks. ''Morning love'' said Gru, ''Lovely day!''. ''How's eet going?'' asked Dru. ''Yes it is a lovely day'' said Lucy as she got up from the floor. ''Doesn't anyone know what day it is?'' she thought to herself. ''Was there any mail Gru?'' Lucy asked, hopefully. There had been some mail, but Gru had picked it all up and hidden it. He pretended not to know anything about it. ''Er no I don't think so honey'' he said, telling Lucy a small white lie cos he didn't want her to know about what was obviously her birthday cards until later. ''Oh'' sighed Lucy, this wasn't what she had been wanting to hear. ''Lucy, Isn't it time you were off to work at the AVL?'' Gru asked. ''Yes there's plenty to do today'' Lucy admitted. She went to put on her coat.

''Bye Lucy, have a nice day'' said Gru, innocently. ''Aren't you coming?'' said Lucy in surprise. "Uhhh….sorry….I can't….because…..I've hurt my foot last night" lied Gru. Lucy wasn't sure if he was telling the truth. ''Really how did you do it and how did you get downstairs?'' she asked. "I do not want to talk about eet" said Gru. Lucy sighed again and went off glumly to work. First no one had wished her happy birthday and now Gru wasn't coming to work with her! It seemed even Margo her eldest daughter had forgotten her birthday! Lucy felt a little sad as she drove off in her three mode car. Gru watched her go. ''Oh good'' he said, ''Now I can make Lucy's birthday cake''. Lucy arrived at the AVL headquarters as normal and reported for duty where Silas was waiting. Meanwhile Gru was wasting no time, baking a cake for Lucy. Margo, Edith and Agnes watched him stirring the mixture. Then Margo had an idea.

''Let's make Mom a cake of our own, one that she can keep forever'' she said to Edith and Agnes. ''How?'' asked Edith. ''With our modelling clay'' Margo explained, ''Then we can paint it when it's dry and solid''. ''Let's write No. 1 Mom on the top'' suggested Agnes. ''Perfect'' agreed Margo, ''Mom does so much for us, she's the best mom in the world''. Edith got the modelling clay out of the cupboard and the girls got to work. They moulded the clay into a cake shape and left it dry in their room. They hoped it would be dry in time for them to paint before Lucy came home. The minions hung up lots of balloons and streamers. There were sandwiches, crisps, jellies, Lucy's favourite cookie dough ice cream and little sausages on sticks. ''Some birthday this is turning out to be'' muttered Lucy, under her breath. She'd never felt so miserable in her life. Back at Gru's house, Lucy's birthday cake was baked and Gru was icing it.
