Chapter 1
Olivia laid in the maternity ward alone. The surrogacy process was over for her. The child she carried was with the family. She would be all alone again. She had her best friend Abbey but it wasn't the same as the biological connection. Olivia had that with the baby though it was temporary. She would be discharged in 48 hours . Her breast felt full the doctors said that would happen after giving birth. She did plan to pump for the family the first few weeks according to the agreement.
Meanwhile across the hall Fitz was dealing with an unhappy newborn and the loss of his wife during childbirth. He was alone because his family was out of state and no one could predict the birthing complication Mellie suffered. The pregnancy had been normal until it came time to deliver. Mellie hemorrhaged to death after delivering Jerry.
Olivia could hear the infant crying and decided to investigate. She put on her robe and went across the hall. The door was cracked. She noticed Fitz trying to reason with crying newborn and didn't see anyone else. " Listen Jerry it's you, me and your sister mommy is gone and I know you hungry and you gotta give me a break," Olivia heart broke hearing something had happened to his wife. Olivia enter the room and walked over to Fitz. It wasn't until she touched his arm and said, "Hi", and noticed her there.
Fitz, looked up and said, " Hi " back. Olivia extended her hands out for the infant. He was tired and relieved thinking maybe this stranger could help. Olivia removed the infant from his arms and Jerry stopped fussing and relaxed. She brought him to her chest and spoke softly rubbing his back. Fitz watched in amazement with the bottle in hand. " Listen little man daddy trying to feed you and you're over here being a fuss butt", Olivia said. Jerry was very alert for only being 24 hours old. He stared at Olivia as if he understood. Olivia moved to sit down and ask for the bottle.
Jerry was quieter but wasn't liking the bottle actually was turning towards Olivia's breast. She looked at Fitz explaining she is breastfeeding for her surrogate family and did he mind? Fitz was knowledgeable and understood people shared breast milk and was okay with Olivia helping his son. Individuals who participate in surrogacy go through a lot of screenings. When Olivia put Jerry to her breast he latched on immediately. Olivia was excited to see Jerry finally feeding. He was a beautiful baby and his eyes were bright blue like his father's. Fitz released a sigh of relief seeing his son finally eating and completely comfortable with this stranger. He took a moment to close his eyes and placed his head in his hands. Olivia reached out and squeezed his shoulder with her free hand letting him know he wasn't alone.
