Gold was panting as he shut the door behind him. He slowly descended to the floor to sit, his back sliding against the door it was leaning on. He covered his face with his palms and finally let go of the tears he was holding back.
It's over
He kept thinking back to the mistake he made. The mistake that ended it all.
He was in love with his best friend, Silver. He has been for quite a while now and the other knew. He was confronted by the redhead about his feelings for him and he admitted it all. The redhead didn't reject his feelings, nor did he accept it. He simply asked the boy with golden eyes if he could wait for him as he sorted out his personal troubles.
The redhead was a troubled guy. He was the son of the leader of a notorious mafia group known as "Team Rocket" and because of that, he didn't grow up the way he should have. He was groomed to take over the organization after his father. He grew up being trained to lead and fight. He never learned how to socialize with others and earn friends. Instead, every day he earned bruises and wounds from all the training he received.
Because of that, Silver always had a hard time trusting others. When he met Gold after running away from home at the age of twelve, it took some time before Silver trusted the black-haired boy. Gold was his first friend who eventually became his best. Together, they took down Team Rocket and Silver hoped that with that, he could finally try and move on from his past.
He couldn't. After all, he still needed to confront one man. The man who was the mastermind of it all, his own father. With Gold's help, they searched for him but to no avail. The man clearly does not want to be found and Gold grew tired of it after two years of searching. He confronted the redhead about it and they broke into an argument which now leads us to present time.
Gold said some things he wished he hadn't and ran away. The look that painted the redhead's face still haunts him. He hurt him and it hurts Gold to see the redhead hurt and to know that he was the reason for it. He wished he hadn't run away and instead wrapped his arms around the redhead and comforted him like he always did every time the redhead broke down.
Was it insensitive for him to tell the redhead to get his shit together so he can love him? He was tired of waiting and all this time he felt like he was receiving the short end of the stick. He has always been understanding but he reached his limit. After all, he was human. He was always there for the redhead every time he knocked on his door. Whatever the redhead needed, he has always given. Was it selfish for him to be the one to ask this time?
The answer didn't matter because the moment he asked these questions, it was over. The relationship that they slowly built together with trust, gone because of his selfishness. His heart tightened as he thought of all the moments that they shared together and how they will never share those anymore. As if on cue, rain started pouring hard on New Bark Town. "The perfect weather to drown in my sorrow" the golden eyed boy thought.
Gold let out an exasperated sigh and wiped the tears off of his face. He got up from the floor he was sitting on and headed for the stairs to go up to his room. He just wanted to fall to his bed's comfort and cry himself to sleep. As he neared the steps leading to his room, Gold heard a knock from his front door. He wondered who would come to visit him at this hour. The person on the other side of the door surprised him.
It was Silver. His hands were on his knees and he's panting like there's no tomorrow. His hair and clothes were drenched, courtesy of the rain. "Gold, I-" the redhead started but he was interrupted as Gold pulled him inside and shut his front door.
"What the hell were you thinking?" Gold shouted, concerned for the red haired boy. He seated the redhead on his sofa and went to his bathroom to fetch a towel. He was curious and scared of the reason the redhead came to see him, but it wasn't his priority right now. Right now, he needs to dry the redhead to make sure he won't catch a cold.
He sat down next to the redhead and started drying his hair with a newly fetched towel. The silence between them grew as not a single one of them dared to start the conversation. Gold grew tired of the silence and decided to break it with a joke only to receive no response from Silver. Not even a look of annoyance or a slight chuckle that he normally responds to Gold's jokes.
Gold sighed. He thought maybe Silver really hates him now. He told the redhead that he would go upstairs and bring him a change of clothes but the redhead tugged on his hand, prompting him to stay. "I need to talk to you."
Gold gulped. He was terrified of what the redhead was about to say. He feared that he would officially end things here with him and he might never see Silver again.
"After you left, I thought about what you said" the redhead started. ""You asked me if my past is really what was holding me back from returning your feelings or if I just don't want to. I realized then, that I do want to."
Gold's eyes widened and started to water as he heard the redhead's confession.
"When you ran away, it hit me that I don't want to lose you. What I want is for you to stay and hold my hand every time I feel scared or overwhelmed. What I want is to hear all your corny ass jokes in an attempt to cheer me up every time I cry. What I want is to be by your side every time we face and fight our enemies." Silver then held Gold's hands and looked into his golden eyes.
"What I want is to show you how thankful I am to you for being a part of my life. What I want is to make you feel how much I appreciate you for always being there for me. What I want is to tell you how much I love you every single day."
"I love you Gold" Silver says as he smiles at the golden eyed boy. "I'm sorry it took me this long to realize. I'm sorry for making you feel neglected for so long. I will get my shit together so please, love me again."
Gold wrapped his arms around the redhead tightly. "Idiot! I never stopped loving you" he tried to say with a straight voice, but he couldn't. He was crying from the redhead's sudden confession and because of that his voice was shaking.
Silver let out a soft chuckle and returned the warm embrace. He was terrified to explore this new chapter of his life, but he knew he wouldn't be alone. Gold will be with him to give him strength, like he always does. He still hasn't received closure from his past and he might never be able to, but for Gold, he would be willing to move forward and focus on their present and their future together.
