Chapter 8

.

The rest of my visit with Donna was wonderful. Sadly the butter I made was lost to Angie's antics. Donna and Angie loved the muffins I made though and I have been asked to make them again. But being a little cunning, I said I would make them if she would let me charge my cellphone. Donna was confused but agreed and showed me the nearest outlet. When I pulled my phone out of my purse Angie tried to snatch it from me, but other then that they didn't say anything about it. I was given a quick tour of the house after we had our tea. The house was nearly the same as the game version. With the only differences being that nothing was blocked off. Like the hall upstairs that is blocked by junk, actually leads to Donna's room and the bathroom. Donna was all nervous when showing me her room. It was adorable how everything was set up. She had a small bed with black covers, with a small baby bed next to it for Angie. The whole room reminded me of those playsets that came with mini copies for dolls. If Donna has something, a smaller version of it has been made for Angie. On a desk in the corner of the room are scattered papers and doll parts. But what catches my eye the most is that she has hung up my drawing of Angie above the dolls desk.

"You kept this?" I whisper more to myself then Donna. Reaching out to trail my fingertips over the wrinkled paper. My eyes lingering on the smudge mark across the neck of the drawing. 'Weird...'

"Of course we did! Little sis worked hard to draw it after all!" Angie is spinning in a circle like a ballerina next to me.

"I was going to draw you both as a gift but..."

"But what?"

"I was worried you would get upset at me. " I stare at the floor as I speak and rub my arm nervously. " You don't like people seeing your face so I was scared... I was scared you would hate me for it..."

"Never."

"Huh?" I look up at her in confusion but it quickly morphs into surprise when I see her. Donna has moved her veil to the side so that the unscarred half of her face is visible. A loving smile is on her pale lips as she stares at me.

"I will never hate you."

"I'm gonna hug you now. You are just to adorable!" I hug the taller woman tightly, getting a small laugh out of her. "Thank you for letting me see you big sister." I whisper against her shoulder before puling away. "You know, your the first sibling I've had that hasn't tried to kill me at some point."

"?"

"Sorry, that was a strange topic change. These cursed visions make me blurt out random things at times."

"It's fine."

"But what do you mean? Your family tried to kill you?" Angie floats up to sit on her owners shoulder as we leave Donna's room.

"Sadly yes. It seems that nearly every life I had siblings in, I was hated by them for some reason. " My tone becomes sad as I reach up to touch where a scar on my shoulder is hidden by my dress. "One of them succeeded by way of poison..." Shaking my head to clear it of those memories I aim a smile at Donna. " Not to worry though, I now have a wonderful big sister who I love very much. "

" ! " Donna stops walking when I say that. And before I know it I am being glomped from behind by her and Angie.

"Haha~ Donna that tickles!" She has started to nuzzle the back of my neck, her thin arms wrapped around my waist.

"I love you too."

"Me too!" A clock chimes the hour and I gasp at how late it is. Donna lets go of me thinking something is wrong.

"I need to start heading back to the castle. Alcina gave me a curfew of sorts for trips outside the castle."

"Awww. We want you to stay longer though!"

"I know, and I wish I could, but if I do Alcina would be furious. I am afraid if I am late she might ban me from visiting you again." I give her an apologetic look before giving Donna one more hug. " How about we try and plan for me to stay here for a few days soon? "

"Sleepover!" Angie flies around the room excitedly and giggling like crazy. Donna helping me put on my coat when we reach the door, and handing me a small package with Alcina's name on it. I look at it confused for a second before placing it in my coat pocket.

"Donna one more thing." I motion for her to come closer, she tilts her head curiously but moves closer. Carefully I reach up and move her veil enough to reveal her cheek. Then I lean forward to place a quick kiss on her cheek. She tenses up for a second but a happy aura radiates from her. The image of when Donna pretended to be Mia enters my mind. Her heartbreaking plea of not wanting to be alone echoing in my head. "If you ever want me to visit just ask. As long as I am here you don't have to be alone. " With that said I open the front door and walk outside. When I reach the curve leading to the elevator, I look over my shoulder to wave bye. Donna and Angie wave back before closing the door.

"Now to make the freezing journey back home." I rush my way back to the crossroad, the guard from earlier is nowhere to be seen. But I don't blame them for leaving to be honest. Sighing I make my way through the village. When I pass the stone statue near the church I nearly slip on some ice. Thankfully I manage to regain my balance before I could fall on my ass. "Whenever I meet the Duke I am requesting a pair of snow boots. Wait what is that?" I pause to look down at the strange root poking out of the ground near the statues base. As I lean forward the root twitches slightly. "Is that..." Hesitantly I reach out and touch the root, but instantly pull my hand back in pain. "Did it just bite me?" Carefully inspecting my hand I notice a rash of some kind starting to form. On my palm is a small stab wound that has started to bleed. "How am I going to hide this..." When I turn back to glare at the root it is gone. " Sneaky bastard aren't you." Grabbing a handful of snow I use it to wash off the blood before it dries. My hands are freezing now but hopefully this will at least buy me time to hide it better.

Watching my steps more carefully this time, I make my way through the engraved door that you had to put the stone circles in. The door opens without me having to hunt down the stones though. By the time I make it across the bridge my fingers are like popsicles. 'Why has my body become so weak to the cold? I was never like this before coming here.' When I finally am inside the castle Alcina is there waiting for me. When she doesn't see my guard with me she gets angry. I try and tell her it's fine, but it doesn't help. That guard is definitely going to be in trouble when they return to the castle. Sighing as I struggle to unbutton my coat and getting a little frustrated when I can't. My fingers being to numb to really get a good grip on the damn buttons. And the rash on my hand is starting to ache.

"Alcina I might need some help here..."

"That guard is going to become the latest vintage." She growls while leaning down to help me out of my coat. A maid that was standing nearby catching the garment when Alcina tosses it behind herself.

"I was at Donna's for hours, love. Can you blame them for leaving to find shelter?" I let out a tiny sneeze behind my hand.

"Be that as it may, they should not have abandoned you like that. Why did they not follow you inside Donna's home?"

"They were to scared to go past the tree with hanging dolls. So they stayed at the crossroads..."

"WHAT!?" I cover my ears when she yells, the guards and maids near us all become scared. No one wanting to be on the receiving end of their Lady's wrath. "Not only do they leave you to return unguarded, they didn't even take you to Donna's house!?" Alcina's eyes flash gold as her anger rises.

"Alcina, love please calm down." My voice stutters a bit as a cold shiver goes through my body. I hold out my arms towards her wanting a hug. She calms down a little as she picks me up bridal style. "Just wanted a hug but this is nice too."

"Bring up some warm tea immediately." The nearest maid rushes off to the kitchens to fulfill the order.

'I'm starting to think Alcina has a thing for carrying me around. ' The thought makes me snicker softly. 'My knight in shining armor.'

"Alcina I'm fine. "

"You most certainly are not fine. " She aims a small glare at me as she speaks. "Thankfully you are able to handle the cold better than my daughters. But you still are much to fragile to be out this long again."

"I am not- " I have to stop and cover my mouth and nose when a violent sneeze hits me. My cheeks burning in embarrassment when Alcina hands me a handkerchief. "Thank you."

"Until I find a proper guard for you Donna will have to come here to visit you."

"Are you grounding me?" I ask with a laugh before another sneeze hits me. "Oh bother..." My seemingly worsening condition makes Alcina quicken her pace. But this just makes me start to feel a little dizzy. "Alcina, love, please slow down. I love you holding me but I would hate to get sick right now."

"You better not. And yes I suppose I am in a way." She warns playfully, slowing her pace again but is still moving fast compared to me.

"I'll fine once I warm up again." Sighing I rest my head against her upper arm and shoulder. Wincing when my wing scars start to tingle like when your leg falls asleep. I start to feel like my whole body is going numb. ' Uh oh, I know this feeling.' "Alcina."

"Yes?"

"Don't panic." No sooner do i say those words my eyes roll back into my head, my body going completely limp as my world fades to black. Alcina yelling my name is one of the last things I hear. 'She is totally gonna panic isn't she.' The pitch black void of my mind is all that I can see now. Time is lost to me as I float endlessly through the pitch black void. I feel like I am asleep but my mind is fully awake. It is almost as if I am floating in a pool of water. But this water is different than normal. Whatever I am floating in has the texture of tapioca pudding, but it is as light as jello. And its...moving...but not in a normal way. 'It's almost like it has a heartbeat. What are you?' As if the substance can hear me it tightens around my body. What sounds like people whispering starts up around me. I can't make out anything they are saying though. But the more I focus on the voices, the clearer they become. One voice seems to be louder than the rest. 'Is that a child's voice?'

"...op...h..."

"What?" I turn my body towards the voice, focusing on that singular voice the best I can.

"..st...er..."

"Who are you!?" I yell in frustration at the voice. All becomes silent after I yell that. My heart starts to beat rapidly as the defining silence surrounds me. A sharp pain courses through my body like something is filling my veins with sharp metal. My head feels like it is going to explode as the image of roots wind their way through my mind. The roots are trying to force their way into my memories. "Are you...Are you the megamycete?" A bone chilling presence suddenly appears next to me. I stop breathing when cold breath hits the shell of my hear.

"Stop her." The child's voice whispers to me as its small arms wrap around my neck.

"S-Stop who?"

"Mother."

And just like that I wake up gasping for air. My lungs burning and heart racing a mile a minute. Next to me someone lets out a startled scream. But I ignore them for the moment as I struggle to catch my breath. 'What the hell was that?' Raising my shaking hands to cover my face I notice my left hand is bandaged. A confused look crosses my face before I remember the root bit me. 'Wait...that was a megamycete root! Is that how it spoke to me?' I quickly unwrap the bandages as I sit up. "Oh dear..." My emerald eyes stare in shock at the bright red mark on my skin. The mark being shaped like the megamycete itself, with what appears to be small spiders coming out of it to wrap around my wrist. "It marked me..."

"M-Mistress?" The nervous voice of Nadia makes me snap out of my thoughts. She is standing next to the bed I'm in with a glass of water in her hands. Taking the offered glass I force a small smile at the girl. 'Why do I feel so weak? It's like my body is made of lead.'

"Thank you Nadia. " A small relieved sigh escapes me as the cool liquid wets my dry throat. Knowing not to push myself though I only drink about half of the water. When done I hand the cup to Nadia. "Nadia can you tell me what happened?"

"You f-fainted miss. "

"I figured that dear, I meant what happened after." Slowly I start to get out of bed to Nadia's dismay. The poor girl looking like she is about to have a panic attack.

"Lady Dimitrescu told me t-to watch over you w-while she was tending to something. And if you were t-to awake to not let you out of bed."

"Well I wish to get up now." I lightly smack her hand when she tries to get me to lay back down. "Where is Alcina by the way?" When Nadia tenses up at my question I start to worry a bit. "Nadia?"

"She's...um well she's..."

"Just tell me dear." Nadia takes a deep shuddering breath before speaking again.

"She is punishing the guard that went with you."

"Take me to her." My voice comes out a little harsh but I don't care right now. Nadia lets out a little whimper but helps me get out of bed. Once I am on my feet she rushes to get a pair of simple ballet flats for me. She even made sure that they match the knee length maroon nightgown I am wearing. This one being made of a soft cotton material instead of lace. 'At least this will be less embarrassing then running around the castle in lace.' Once I have my shoes on Nadia leads me down to the kitchens. I have to stop a few times to catch my breath but I press on. We pass by a few staff workers that are all shaking in fear. When we reach the sitting area outside the dining room I understand why. As Nadia opens the door to the dining room a blood curdling scream can be heard. Nadia is shaking like a leaf as she holds onto the door handle.

"Nadia I can go on from here, you may go tend to your other duties." I say while gently pushing her back towards the stairs.

"B-But-"

"No buts. Go." She hesitates for a moment before nodding and running up the stairs. I wait till she is out of view before making my way towards the screaming. Each ear piercing shriek sending a cold chill down my spine. 'Come on Serilda you need to stop this!' Steeling myself I charge through the dining room and kitchen. Doing my best to ignore the screams as I make my way down to The Chamber of Solace. 'Huh. It isn't as messy as the game was. At least it doesn't look like I will have to bob and weave my way around.' The air down here smells like mold, stagnant water, and metal mostly. I dare not try and imagine what the other smells are when I pass an empty cell. As I walk I keep my gaze straight ahead, not wanting to look at any of the people in the cells. The hole that was in the ceiling in the game is not there. Instead a large stone column stands in the center of the room. The snow dusted room from my memories now has barrels lining the walls. And judging by the dark red stains under them, it is very likely they are the 'donations' from the prisoners. 'Ugh. No Serilda, now is not the time to puke.' Pushing forward with one hand covering my nose as I make my way down the hall. When I finally make it to the medical and torture area I am starting to feel a little feverish. But the sound of the triplets giggling takes my full attention.

"There they are. " Just as I round the corner where the medical equipment was in the game, another scream come from directly in front of me. I stumble backwards as I take in the horrific sight before me. The guard that went with me today is hung up in the middle of the hall by their hands. Chunks of flesh have been bitten and carved off of them. Her torso is ripped open and from what I can see some of her ribs are missing. Both of her legs have been sliced off cleanly. Her blood falling into a barrel that has been placed under her. The woman screams again as Daniela grabs another rib and pulls it out. Blood splatters all over the giggling girl as she licks the blood off the rib bone.

"I don't know what you did to piss off mother but it means we get to have fun.~"

"Why couldn't it have been a man to piss her off." Bela groans as she stabs the guard in the side lazily. "I want some thicker meat than this pathetic guard."

"Don't worry sis when the weather clears up a bit we can go hunting in the village." Cassandra calls out from the medical storage room. Her bugs buzzing loudly from inside along with a strange sloshing sound.

"True. But that is months away, with only a small chance of a warm spell before then." The triplets continue to talk amongst themselves as they finish off the guard. I just stand there frozen, not knowing what to say or do now. Subconsciously I take a step back only to bump into a solid object.

"Well well well, look who wandered into our playroom. Nice to see you again sleeping beauty." I tense up at Cassandra's mocking tone but ignore her to walk over to Bela. My eyes never leaving the blond haired girl.

"Bela is your mother down here? I need to speak with her about something rather important."

"Don't ignore me you stupid prey!"

"I would pay attention to you if you at least showed me a little respect, Cassandra." I snap back at her over my shoulder. " Do you see your sisters acting the way you do? No you don't, they at least were polite enough to get to know me when I came here. " Daniela starts to snicker at her sister's dumbfounded look. "Daniela dear you have blood on your mouth." I sigh pulling a handkerchief out of my sleeve and start wiping her mouth.

"You are a strange human."

"I'll take that as a complement, Bela. Stop moving Daniela!" I scold the squirming girl lightly, booping her on the nose when she bites my finger. "Cheeky girl."

"Are you not bothered by the dead body next to you?"

"I won't lie and say it doesn't bother me a bit. But it is not the worst thing I have seen in my life. There we go, all clean now." Daniela quickly moves away from me, snatching the handkerchief as she does.

"Mother is down the hall in the tasting room. " Bela says in a bored tone as she pulls her sickle out of the corpse. "Seeing you finally up is sure to help her bitter mood." Her wording confuses me a bit, but I just brush it off as Bela being Bela.

"I will see what I can do." Waving bye to the girls I carefully step around a puddle of blood. Walking calmly away and only letting my tiredness show once out of the triplets view. 'I am so lucky I didn't puke or pass out. It feels like my body has been drained of energy. ' Sighing softly I start walking up the narrow stairway to the tasting room. Trying to ignore the fever that is slowly starting to come back. When I get to the door at the top of the stairs I hear glass breaking. Considering where the sound came from I can only assume it was a wine bottle.

"That fools blood won't even make a tolerable wine!" Another bottle breaking is followed by Alcina's outburst. My hand hesitates on the doorknob as I listen to her mutter angrily to herself. Her signature heels clicking against the floor as she paces the room.

'Now or never I guess.' I slowly open the door and start to say her name as I step into the room. Only to be greeted by something hard hitting me square in the forehead. Groaning I fall to the ground while holding my head in pain. "Ow..."

"Serilda!?"

"You could have just told me to leave you know." I give her a small pained smile as she kneels down in front of me. "And I'm bleeding again, great." I sigh to myself when I pull my hands away from my head. Blood splotching my palms and fingertips.

"I am so sorry, draga mea I didn't mean to hit you like that." She cups my head in her hands as she examines my wound. Looking at her I notice how tired she actually looks. She looks paler then usual and has bags under her eyes. And it might just be my imagination but she seems thinner. 'Has she not been eating enough?'

"Don't fret about it, love. Been hit with worse than a- what did you hit me with?"

"An empty wine bottle." A blush dusts my cheeks when she leans down to kiss my forehead. Her voice wavering a bit like she is holding back tears. " I'm so glad you are finally awake." Carefully picking me up she cradles me against her chest, treating me like I am made of porcelain.

"What do you mean? Haven't I only been out for a day?"

"No...Serilda you have been asleep for two weeks." I stare at her completely dumbfounded as all color drains from my face.

"What?"
