Natsuki Subaru opened his black eyes. Every time he woke up, no matter how deep his sleep was, he would always be conscious the moment he opened his eyes. This has been a constant throughout his life and he was quite proud of it.

"Master... don't be so rough..."

The figure next to him said these words. Despite how the words might sound she didn't seem to mind whatever her master was doing in those dreams of her. The girl sleeping next to him was Shaula, the girl who has been accompanying him ever since he started this journey.

"I really don't want to find out what she is dreaming about"

He said in a hushed voice as he slowly got up. What they were both lying on could hardly be called a bed. Strewn across the grass was a set of pillows they had found on an abandoned dragon carriage. He would have loved to take the carriage and stop walking but the earth dragon that was supposed to be there wasn't. He doubted they, whoever they were, were even still alive to take revenge on the stolen pillows. These roads are full of bandits after all.

"It might not be much but it's better than sleeping on the floor..."

Natsuki Subaru started stretching his tight body. The night was still dark and by the position of the moon in the sky he figured out that it was about 4 AM.

Usually, he wouldn't be up until at least 6 AM but he hasn't been able to sleep properly for a while. He can't stop thinking about how he...

"Stop. Don't go there"

He said, interrupting his train of thought. The reason he is up so early is because he needs to distract himself. And so Subaru sits on the ground and looks at the night sky. He finds solace in the stars, so high up there, not caring about anything or anyone, just existing.

He looks at the night until...

"Isn't it a beautiful night, Subaru"

He hears the voice of a silver bell behind him. He doesn't need to turn around to know who that voice belongs to, that girl has always been by his side. So,without turning around, he responds

"It really is Emilia-tan. Not as beautiful as you though"

" Don't tease me like that Subaru!. I've told you this many times"

"Sorry, sorry but this is the way of the Natsuki family. No matter the circumstances we always say what is in our minds"

"That doesn't sound like a good thing..."

"Don't say that Emilia-tan. You will only make me sad!"

Feigning to be hurt by her words, Natsuki Subaru puts his arms over his eyes and loudly pretends to cry. This doesn't fool Emilia, of course.

"You are a big boy now, Subaru. I will not be hoodwinked by your acts"

Emilia, who is not fooled by Subarus loudly pretends to cry , puts her slender arms on her waist and pouts.

This makes Subaru take his arms off of his face and look straight at Emilia.

" You look beautiful even while pouting! Emilia-tan is truly the perfect angel!"

"There you go teasing me again..."

This Emilia smiles at Subarus words with a hint of red in her white cheeks. Subaru wasn't lying when he said those flattering words. The moonlight shining on her made her look even more beautiful than before. Emilia was truly a sight to see.

"What are you doing here anyway Subaru? Shouldn't you be sleeping? You're still growing and you need the rest"

"Please stop treating me like a kid. I am a big boy now. I am 17 you know... wait, how old am I again?"

Knowing your age is something that is clear on everyone's mind. After all, this marks the time you have been on earth. Anyone who doesn't know their own age must clearly have something wrong with their head. Sadly, this was the case for the no longer black haired boy.

This Natsuki Subaru had lost his memories. He was transported to this wonderful world and was lost and so he set on a journey: The journey to kill Natsuki Subaru and bring back his former self.

He is a shadow of his former self, he is just an impostor taking the place of a true hero. And so he is determined to bring him back. He will surely do the only thing he couldn't do: Save everyone.

"What's wrong Subaru? Your face turned sour all of a sudden..."

"Nothing to worry about. Just reminding myself of why I am doing what I'm doing... So, you wanted to know why I'm looking at the night sky?

"Yup. You looked so solemn while doing it"

"Well, it's just that I noticed something. This isn't the sky I remember"

Emilia made a puzzled expression

"This isn't the sky you remember? What do you mean?"

" Yeah I can't seem to find any of the constellations I knew about".

The more he looked the more confused he got. No matter how hard he looked he couldn't seem to find any of the constellations. The moon was still high in the sky and this world didn't seem to have much or any light pollution so it stood to reason that the stars should have been visible, but...

" The more I look for familiar things, the more depressed I get. I guess this new world is much more different than I thought"

He made a sad expression. This time he wasn't joking and Emilia could see that.

" I am sorry to hear that Subaru. You seem to know a lot about stars"

"Of course I do. I was named after one after all"

When he first discovered he was named after one of those big lights in the sky, Natsuki Subaru made it his mission to learn as much about stars as possible. This knowledge seems to be useless now that he is no longer in his original world.

"That 's nice. Your parents must have loved you sooooo much"

" Yeah, my parents are the best. I wish I could make them proud"

His parents loved him with all of their hearts. No matter how much he wished they would punish him and no matter how he hated himself they would always be there for him. He loved them so much for that but...

"Aaaah! I dont wanna think about this."

He would keep getting more and more depressed thinking about useless things. His love for his parents mattered very little right now.

"Subaru, are you okay?"

"Yeah I'm fine Emilia-tan. Dont worry.. Say, have I ever told you the story of Altair and Vega?"

To distract himself, he asks Emilia a question. He doesn't know how much Emilia knows about stars and so he asks her.

Emilia puts her head under chin and thinks long and hard about Subarus simple question.

"No, I don't think you have. Can you tell me? I would like to hear it"

As Emilia is saying this she gets closer to where Subaru is sitting and drops to the ground and sits right by his side

"Okay so.."

Subaru points at a particular spot in the night sky. Emilia's gaze follows to where he's pointing.

" Right there in the sky would be Atair, Deneb and Vega"

" There is nothing there though"

"You can't see it here but from where i'm from you can see it clearly in the sky"

" That sounds wonderful! I wish you could show me. So, what's the story?"

Upon hearing Emilia's words Subaru takes a deep breath and starts telling the story.

"Vega was a celestial princess. She was a goddess who lived in the sky and one day she caught the eye of a mortal. His name was Altair"

Subaru closed his eyes for a few seconds. He took a big breath before continuing

They fell madly in love. But Vegas' father grew enraged that his daughter would fall in love with a mere mortal. And so he decided to grant his daughter's request. Altair was made an eternal being who lived in the sky alongside his beloved. But they couldn't be together, they were a galaxy away. They may only meet one day of the year, when a bridge is created between them"

While Subaru is telling this story, Emilia stares at him. This makes Subaru feel slightly self-conscious but he nevertheless finishes the story.

" That's so sad, Subaru. I wish they could both be together. No one should be separated from the one they love"

"I agree with you Emilia-tan. But they will always love each other..."

With the story done, Emilia and Subaru fall into a comfortable silence. They have nothing to talk about but that is okay. They feel each other's company is all that they need.

"Subaru, promise me you will never leave me..."

Emilias words surprises Subaru who looks at her. He met her blue eyes and felt his heart skip a beat. He knew he needed to answer but he was too embarrassed to do so.

"I promise. I will always stay by your side"

Nevertheless, Subaru smiles and promises her that. Under the moonlight, the world doesn't seem to exist anymore, nothing matters anymore, there's only two people who love each other making promises

Emilia smiles and blushes. Then she leans on Subarus shoulder..

" Thank you Subaru but..."

Emilia pauses. He could feel she wasn't smiling anymore. He didn't want to look at her. He knew what would happen if he did. He would hear something from her lips that he definitely didn't want to hear. He would do anything to avoid this.

But Emilia still finished her sentence.

" You shouldn't make promises you can't ke

"What do you mean Emi-"

He finally got the courage to look at her but..

"Oh yeah..."

There was no one there. He covered his no longer working right eye. It was so so so itchy all of a sudden and then he finally realized...

Natsuki Subaru was all alone once again.

"I still have so much left to do"

He got up from the ground and started walking towards the makeshift bed.

He lied down on the ground.

"I wonder if that bridge exists for me"

This was his final thought before he finally closed his tearful eyes.

Patching, patching, patching together

No matter how much he patches, there will always be holes to fill.

Even so he will try to make himself whole again.

Even so, he will still save everyone.
