A/N: Hello 😊 It's been literal years since I've written a fic so I'm hoping I haven't gotten too rusty. I don't even know that anyone will read this but here goes. I wrote this as a prequel piece to another story I'm writing. It goes into deeper explanation about the new "main character." It's AU since it does include new characters that weren't originally in any of the books. Hope it goes well.
Alex Windemere held her newborn daughter in her arms while her year-old godson slept beside her. She shed silent tears as she mourned her best friend, who'd left her baby behind. It could only be grief that caused her out of character behavior. She'd marched up to Dumbledore's office, days away from labor and demanded to know why her godson had been given to a family of heartless muggles.
"My darling Miss Windemere," Albus Dumbledore attempted to calm her down, but Alex was in a quiet rage. Her waist length dreadlocs coiled on his desk as she leaned over it so that she could look him closely in the eyes. She could see her reflection in his half-moon spectacles.
"Give him to me," she whispered dangerously.
"I cannot," replied Dumbledore, sadly. "He is much safer where he is."
"Oh, bollocks, Professor." Alex spat. "I've known Petunia Evans my entire life. I've yet to meet such a cold and dissatisfied creature."
Dumbledore merely smiled at her rudeness.
"But from Voldemort, Miss Windemere- "
"Fidalius Charm." Alex retorted, interrupting him. "Is this why you sent me away, Albus? Anyone could have completed that mission."
"The Fidalius Charm has already failed once, my dear."
"We both know why that didn't work." Alex sighed, finally sitting in front of Dumbledore's desk looking at her feet, running out of steam. "Look, I'll take him abroad if I have to. My parents live Stateside in California. I'll raise him and my daughter together there. I'll bring him back when he's of age to go to Hogwarts."
She rubbed her hands over her swollen belly.
"Sirius is in Azkaban. He'll never know his little girl. Peter is dead. Lilly and James. I'm not losing Harry too."
"You won't let this lie, will you, Miss Windemere?"
"No, sir."
"You'll bring him to the Hogwarts express after he's eleven?"
"Yes, sir."
"Number Four Privet Dr. Little Whinging, Surrey." Dumbledore confided.
"Thank you, Professor."
"Ah, Miss Windemere?"
"Yes, sir?" she asked as she got up to leave.
"Congratulations." He said with a smile.
"Thank you, professor." Alex smiled as she threw her satchel strap over her head.
Professor Armando Dippet looked at Dumbledore with incredulity.
"The woman is nine months pregnant, Armando," He chuckled. "Were you expecting me to duel her? Let's keep a close eye on them and see how this goes."
She had gone to Privet Drive to collect Harry. As she suspected, Petunia didn't seem to care one way or the other that she had come for Harry. Alex did not complain. It was a smooth pass off. They hadn't even exchanged condolences over Lilly's death. Neither of them brought it up. She placed Harry in the car seat she'd bought him that morning and took him home where she and her flat-mate, Remus Lupin would be waiting for her.
Her hands too full with the baby to fiddle with her keys, she rang the doorbell and waited for Remus to open the door.
"Evening, mate," Alex quipped as she bolted through the door.
"Evening Alex…" Remus replied, slowly. "Is that…?"
"Harry, yes." She huffed, unfastening him out of his car seat.
"How…?"
"Professor Dumbledore told me where to get him."
Lupin just blinked in surprise.
"Well?" Alex demanded. "Don't you want to hold him?"
Remus smiled warmly and enveloped the baby in his arms.
"We're only 21-years-old, Lex. How are we going to raise two kids?"
"We're going to California to live with my parents, that's how." Alex replied, simply. She eased onto the couch and was struggling to get her socks off. Remus waved his wand while he swayed back and forth with Harry and waved it. Alex's socks flew off her feet and landed in the hamper outside of the washroom.
'So let me get this straight," Remus said, looking Alex full in the face. "We're keeping Harry and fleeing abroad to California, United States of America?"
"Yeah." Alex replied pulling Harry's bottles and formula milk out of her shiny leather satchel.
"Whatever you say, Alex."
"You're damned right." She smiled.
Alex and Remus were welcomed int the Windemere's large estate. As Alex's parents were muggles she didn't go into too much detail about how she had inherited Harry. She simply told them that illy and James had been murdered in a break in and she volunteered to keep the baby. Her parents were so distraught to hear of Lilly Evan's death that they didn't really probe for more information. They were happy, at least, that she still had Remus. She knew her parents assumed that Remus was the father of the baby she was currently cooking in her belly, but she hadn't corrected them yet. One thing at a time.
"So," Alex's mother Margarite said, trying to inject some cheer into the dreary mood in the room. "Have we thought of any names for our new wee one on the way?"
"Carrolyn." Alex said at once. "Carrolynn Lillian Black."
"I love it." Margarite gushed.
