Darkness, then light.

A smiling human looked down at me, like a giddy child.

The man raised me up. "Look May, a toaster!" The man sat me down on a counter.

The kitchen was filled with appliances of all kinds. There were, juicers, air fryers and even a popcorn machine, but there was only one microwave.

The man walked over to the microwave and gave it a kiss. "Another friend for my beautiful May." This exchange made my coils burn hot.

The man scratched his greasy head. "Now where to put you?"

This honestly was a good question, for every inch of the kitchen had some type of appliance cluttering it. The man had had catalogs and magazines that advertised the latest of home appliances. It didn't help that these were also thrown all over the place.

The man looked at May. "How about right next to you." The man moved me and fitted me snuggly next to May. "There! But what should our new friend be called? How about Smeg, or maybe Meg for short."

A weird rumbling came from the man. "Time for dinner!" The man grabbed something from one of his many mini freezers, then the man placed it in May and pressed start.

May hummed to life and heat came off in waves from the heat vents facing me.

My coils simmered, then popped. Everything went dark, but I still felt it all.

Fire roaring, plastic melting and metal burning; like a furnace with its pilot light bright as the sun.

My cord wrapped around May's. That is how we were found by a firefighter. He lifted us up.

A voice called from beyond the smoke, that covered the air. "Sam, where are you!"

The firefighter yelled back. "I-I'm over here!"

The voice beyond the smoke, called out again. "We found a man's body!"

Some time passed, and now we find ourselves living happily with the firefighter and their family.
