The Before

He needed help. He needed out. He was scared; so scared.

His sister was in danger. He ran down the halls Dauntless, utilizing all the shortcuts he knew until he arrived at the door of his arch nemesis. He forced his pride back and knocked.

He got his out. His nemesis hadn't been so understanding at first, but he quickly got the gist. He was grateful, so grateful. With any luck, his sister will be able to get out here the year after next.

As for now, he allowed himself to wonder into the training room. Nobody's in here right now, and the feel of the gun under his fingers relaxed him. He fired at the target until he'd emptied three different magazines. It's only after that he feels relaxed enough to take a deep breath.

He made the familiar walk to his apartment feeling oddly relaxed. Four would help him; after all, he knew all about manipulative parents. Eric Matthews allowed a small smile to grace his face as he entered his apartment. In just another year, his little sister would hopefully join him. He could only hope that his mother didn't get to her first. He sighed as he unlocked the old drawer and removed his sister's photo. Denise stared up at him, her smile wide and showing off a mouthful of braces.

"Soon, Sissy. Soon." he promised the picture of the one person he'd do anything to protect. "We'll get out of this; it's going to be okay. We're going to be okay. I'll make sure of it."
