Sharon Raydor felt a few weeks away would do her some good.
All this flirting with Andy Flynn was getting to her. He was starting to be all she thought about. When she got dressed she wondered what he liked seeing her wear. When she put on her makeup and did her hair, she wondered if he preferred light makeup or dark. Hair up, down, half way, curly, or straight.
Then her mind went elsewhere. She began wondering what his mouth felt like on hers. That would lead to her wondering what their bodies felt like against each other moving to their own rhythm.
All she would have to do was say the word and she would find out.
"Mom?" Sharon heard her name breaking her out of her thoughts.
Sharon had been standing on the balcony of her parent's time share drinking her coffee in her own little world.
"Yes?" Sharon turned to find Emily with her hands on her hips.
"I've been talking to you for the past five minutes." Emily walked to her to lean on the railing with her. "Where were you just now?"
"Just thinking." Sharon shrugged and wrapped one arm around her daughter. "Isn't this beautiful?"
"It is." Emily sighed wrapping her arm around her mother. "You need to get away more."
"I know." Sharon agreed then looked at her daughter. "I'm sorry. What were you talking to me about?"
"Grandma said breakfast was done," Emily pulled Sharon's phone out of her pocket. "And you had a phone call from a Lieutenant Flynn."
"That took you five minutes to say?" Sharon smirked trying to hide her excitement.
"I might have over exaggerated." Emily smiled pulling away. "I'll tell her work called but don't be too long. You're on vacation."
"Tell that to your brother." Sharon watched her walk back inside.
Sharon excitedly looked at her phone. She saw where Andy had left a message.
"Goodmorning Captain,
Miss me yet?
I hope you're having a wonderful time. Skiing, hot chocolate, spades, the fire place, the arguing between your kids . . . You know . . . The whole nine yards.
I was just thinking about you. I'll see you when you get back."
Sharon couldn't help but smile. She didn't know where all this had come from. They practically hated each other not so long ago.
Sharon could still see his angry face when she'd been forced to investigate him after he'd been stabbed. He'd hated her guts long before that though.
Then things changed. They were pulled to each other. Every time they'd been left alone.
Maybe it was time to see what could evolve.
Sharon dialed his number.
"Good morning, Beautiful." Andy said picking up after one ring.
"Good morning, Lieutenant." Sharon's smile grew. An unknown warmth came over her when she heard his voice. "Sorry I missed your call. I was enjoying the view with a cup of coffee. My phone was in my room."
"It's okay. I was just on my way to work and was thinking about you. Are you having a good time?"
"I am." Sharon leaned against the railing. "I wish we didn't have to leave in a couple of days."
"You don't have to be back to work for a few weeks. Extend your stay."
"There's no point. My parents have to get back to their pets. Emily has three auditions New Years Eve. Ricky's work calls every day, sometimes ten times a day. They need him back."
"Sounds like your kids get their work ethic from their mother."
"Yeah," Sharon agreed. "I guest they do."
"You said a couple of days? So you'll be back before New Years?"
"Yes, I fly back in on New Years Eve." She nodded.
"Have any plans to ring into the New Year?"
"Yes, with a glass of champagne. Same thing I do every year since the kids left."
"How about you ring in the New Year with me?" He offered.
"Is this another attempt to get me to kiss you?" Sharon called him out.
"Yes."
"Why me? You can have just about any woman you want." Sharon rolled her eyes and turned around to look at herself in the reflection of the floor to ceiling window. "If you saw me right now, it wouldn't be me. My hair is all over the place, no makeup."
"Sounds beautiful to me." Sharon could hear the smile on his voice. "I have to go I'm walking into he murder room. Just tell me you'll come ring in the New Year with me."
"Andy," Sharon hesitated turning back around to lean on the railing. "Okay. Fine. I'll come spend New Years Eve with you. I fly in at six. I can be at your house by nine, but I won't promise a kiss."
"Won't stop me from trying." Sharon could hear the joy in his voice. "I'll see you New Year's Eve at nine. It's a date."
Andy hung up before she could correct him. She hadn't intended on this being a date. She sighed and covered her face with her free hand.
"Who are you spending New Years Eve with, Young Lady?" Sharon's father came up from behind her causing Sharon to jump like a teenager getting caught talking to a boy.
"Hey, Daddy." Sharon smiled after recovering.
"You're not making plans with Jack, are you?" He came beside her and put his arm around her.
"No, Daddy." Sharon shook her head. "A friend at work wants me to come over to welcome the New Year together instead of spending it alone."
"Do you flirt with all of your friends from work?" Her father smiled. "Or just this one?"
"Just this one." She sighed. "It's a long story."
"Long story or not. You deserve to be happy." Her father squeezed her. "Jack didn't make you happy."
"I was happy with him for a while." Sharon shrugged. "He did give me two beautiful children."
"He did." Sharon's father turned her around. She could see her mother putting their breakfast on the table while she laughed with her grandkids. "See that woman in there?"
"Yes."
"I can't imagine life without her. I've already had a talk with God. I want to go first." Her father sighed. Sharon could feel a hint of tears forming in her eyes at the thought of losing either one of her parents. "I can't breath without her. She's my whole world and life without her would be pure Hell."
Sharon laid her head on his shoulder.
"That's what I want for you." He looked down at her. "Someone who can't bare the thought of you not being in his life."
"If it happens, it happens." Sharon raised up and kissed his cheek. "I'm also content being alone."
"I know you are." He kissed her forehead. "Your mother and I raised you to be a strong independent woman, but it's nice having someone to share your life with. Especially as you get older."
"Maybe one day, Daddy." Sharon sighed.
"Well Darlin', I hate to tell you this," He smiled bumping her shoulder with his. "But you're not getting any younger."
"Don't remind me." Sharon groaned.
"Come on let's get back in and warm up that coffee." He led her toward the door.
