'Al,' called Roe, 'You got a call coming on line 2'. Al picked up the phone on his desk.
'Al Burns,' he went quiet. 'Right OK, we're on our way.' He put the phone back on his desk. 'We've got a body, down at the river' he said. Carrie looked up from her desk which she'd obviously been sleeping on.
'Wa'ssa time?' she mumbled, attempting to unglue her eyes
'Time to get up,' said Al, just as Roe said,
'6.40.' Carrie glared at Al before asking,
'Why is someone down the river at twenty to seven in the morning?' she moaned.
'That,' said Al, hauling Carrie, who moaned in protest, to her feet 'is what we are going to find out.' One uneventful car ride later, the team of six was looking down at a pretty woman in her mid to late twenties, with a hole in her forehead. Jo was crouched down, prodding the woman's head.
'What've we got Jo,' asked Nina.
'Looks like an entrance wound from, I'd say maybe a… 9mm. Gunshot residue around the wound indicates close range and from the look on her face I'd say the killer was behind her, she turned around, saw them and they just shot her.'
'Boss, we got drag marks going from the body to some tire tracks. Presumably, our killer was gonna dump the body in the river, but they were interrupted by something' called Mike. Al turned to watch Carrie, who was on her hands and knees and appeared to be sniffing a rock. She looked up.
'There's blood on this rock, then a hair what maybe, 3 feet away, but its too short to be hers.' She got Jo to bag both the rock and the hair, before making her promise to look into it.
'Who made the call?' asked Mike. Al pointed to a man in his forties, who was loitering by the bank. He knew he was needed, but didn't know where or when.
'Hey,' called Nina, beckoning the guy over 'tell us what you saw.'
'Sure' said the guy, clearly intimidated by Nina's bluntness.
'One thing pal,' said Carrie 'why are you down here so early?'
'I like to walk my dog before it gets busy, she's great with humans but doesn't really like other dogs. Actually, will this take long? Only, she ran off a while ago and I really need to find her.'
'We'll be as quick as possible,' said Al, who had a soft spot for dogs. 'What did you see?'
'Well, I was walking along, calling for my dog, when I saw someone, I didn't see who, dragging her,' he said, pointing to the body, 'when they saw me, they scarpered, I checked her vitals, then I phoned you guys.'
'One more thing,' said Mike 'what did you say your name was?'
'He didn't' jumped in Carrie 'George Stone, 43-'
'How do you-'
'English teacher, 1998-2000, when you quit because you were having troubles with your wife. Having promptly divorced your wife, you became a criminal lawyer in 2005, though not a very good one I might add. But, in 2007, you were forced to quit your job after you were arrested. Now, why was that again pal?' she asked, narrowing her eyes.
